Chapter 522: Episode 520: She’s pregnant.
The cold, hard marble floor of the bathroom sent a sharp shiver right through Roxy’s bare knees.
She leaned over the smooth porcelain toilet, her chest heaving as she violently threw up again. The terrible, bitter taste in her mouth made her eyes water. She squeezed her eyes shut, wrapping her arms tightly around her own stomach. Her whole body was shaking like a tiny leaf in a cold winter wind.
When her stomach was finally completely empty, Roxy slowly sat back on her heels.
She reached up with a totally shaky hand and flushed the toilet. She grabbed a soft white towel from the silver rack, wiped her mouth, and slowly stood up on her weak, wobbly legs. She walked over to the giant mirror hanging above the sink and turned on the cold water.
She splashed the freezing water on her face, trying to wash the pale, sickly look off her skin.
Roxy stared at her reflection in the dark. Her green eyes were wide and full of absolute, blinding terror.
She wasn’t scared of a tummy bug. She was terrified that her emotional fever had returned. She thought that her body was completely failing her again. She thought the deep, heavy grief of leaving her Beastworld babies behind was breaking through her happy new life, ready to drag her back down into the dark.
"No," Roxy whispered to her reflection, her voice cracking. "Please, no. Not again."
They had just found perfect peace. The Kings were finally happy. The giant stone mansion finally felt like a safe, warm home. She absolutely refused to ruin their beautiful billionaire bliss by being a broken, sick, sad girl again.
Roxy took a deep, shaky breath. She forced her shaking hands to stop. She promised herself she was going to hide it. She was going to smile, eat breakfast, and act perfectly normal.
She crept as quietly as a mouse back into the giant, dark master bedroom. She slipped under the heavy silk sheets, curling her cold body up right against Zarek’s massive, warm back, and pretended to be fast asleep.
A few hours later, the bright morning sun completely filled the mansion.
The Kings were awake, moving around the massive estate with their usual loud, happy energy. Roxy forced herself to get out of bed. She put on a pretty, soft pink dress, pinched her cheeks to make them look healthy, and walked slowly down the wide wooden stairs to the giant living room.
Torian and Caspian were sitting on the huge leather couches, watching a loud action movie on the giant television screen. Zarek was standing by the stone fireplace, drinking a cup of hot black coffee.
"Good morning, my beautiful Matriarch," Caspian smiled sweetly, pausing the movie when she walked in. free𝑤ebnovel.com
"Good morning," Roxy said. She tried to smile her brightest, happiest smile, but her stomach instantly did a terrible, totally sick flip.
Just the smell of Zarek’s dark coffee made a wave of fresh nausea rush up her throat. She swallowed hard, digging her fingernails into the palms of her hands to force the sickness down. She walked over to the couches and sat down very carefully, hoping nobody would notice how stiff and pale she looked.
But hiding things from six highly trained, completely devoted former beasts was completely impossible.
Ren walked into the living room, holding a tall glass of cool, fresh water. The handsome fox didn’t have his Beastworld magic anymore, and he was completely trapped in a normal human body, but his deep animal instincts were still incredibly sharp.
He had the sharpest eyes and the best nose in the entire family.
Ren stopped right in the middle of the soft rug. His bright purple eyes locked onto Roxy.
He didn’t look at her pretty pink dress. He looked at the tiny, subtle flush of red high up on her cheeks. He watched the way her chest was rising and falling just a little bit too fast. And then, his nose picked up a tiny, completely invisible change in the air. Her scent was wrong. It wasn’t her normal, sweet vanilla smell. It was thicker, sweeter, and mixed with the sour smell of sickness and pure panic.
"Roxy," Ren said, his voice completely serious. He walked straight toward her, leaving the glass of water on a small wooden table. "What is wrong with you?"
The whole room went totally silent. The fun, loud energy instantly vanished.
Zarek put his coffee cup down with a loud clack. Torian sat straight up on the couch.
"Nothing!" Roxy lied quickly, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She forced a fake laugh. "I am perfectly fine, Ren. I just slept a little bit funny, that’s all."
Ren didn’t believe her for a single second. He walked right up to her and gently grabbed her chin, tilting her face up to the bright morning light.
"Your skin is completely flushed," Ren noted, his purple eyes narrowing with deep worry. "You are sweating, but your hands are ice cold. And you smell... sick."
The Kings went into absolute, full panic mode.
"Sick?" Torian gasped, his bright blue eyes going wide with total terror. The giant White Tiger instantly jumped up from the couch. "Did the fever come back? Is she sad again?"
"I told you the human city was too dirty!" Kaelen growled loudly, pacing back and forth across the rug like a trapped wolf. "A dangerous human disease has infected our Queen! We never should have opened the windows!"
Zarek looked completely terrified. He marched over to the couch, his broad shoulders totally tense. He looked ready to pick up the entire mansion and carry it to a hospital. "Syris!" Zarek roared toward the hallway. "Syris, get your medical bag right now!"
"I’m getting it!" Syris yelled back from his private office, the sound of drawers slamming echoing down the hall. Since Syris was the one who studied human medicine, he was already rushing to find his tools.
"Stop! Guys, please, I am fine!" Roxy begged, tears of pure frustration suddenly filling her green eyes. She hated making them worry. She hated feeling weak.
"Lie down," Ren commanded. It wasn’t a suggestion; it was the totally firm, protective order of a man trying to save his wife.
He gently pushed her shoulders backward until she was lying flat on the soft leather couch. Caspian quickly grabbed a thick blanket and completely covered her legs to keep her warm. Zarek hovered right over her head, his golden eyes totally wild with fear.
"Just breathe, my sweet bunny," Ren whispered gently, totally ignoring the loud panic of his brothers.
Ren reached back and grabbed the glass of cool water from the small table, holding it in his left hand so she could take a sip in a minute. Then, he used his right hand to gently grab her wrist. He pressed his fingers against her skin, checking her fast, racing pulse.
It was beating incredibly fast. But it wasn’t the weak, fluttery heartbeat of a sick person. It was strong and totally heavy.
Ren frowned. He let go of her wrist.
"Let me check your temperature," Ren murmured.
He gently placed his warm hand flat against Roxy’s stomach, right through the soft fabric of her pink dress. He closed his purple eyes, focusing all of his sharp, deep fox senses on the girl he loved. He felt the heat radiating from her skin. He felt the tight knot of her muscles.
And then, his sharp senses picked up something else.
It was tiny. It was incredibly faint. But it was absolutely, undeniably there.
The room was dead silent. Torian, Zarek, Kaelen, and Caspian were holding their breath, waiting for Ren to tell them what kind of terrible human virus was hurting their Matriarch. Syris ran into the room holding a black medical bag, but he froze when he saw Ren’s face.
Suddenly, Ren goes completely pale.
All the blood totally drained out of the handsome fox’s face. His purple eyes flew wide open, staring blankly at Roxy’s stomach as if he had just seen a ghost. His jaw dropped open.
His fingers started to tremble.
The glass of water he was holding in his left hand simply slipped right out of his loose grip.
The heavy glass hit the hardwood floor and completely shattered into a hundred shiny pieces. Cold water splashed everywhere, completely soaking the edge of the expensive rug. freewebnσvel.cøm
Nobody looked at the broken glass. Every single King was staring at Ren.
Zarek stepped forward, his massive chest heaving. "Ren? What is it? What is wrong with her?!"
Ren slowly lifted his shaking hand away from Roxy’s stomach. He didn’t look at Roxy. He slowly turned his head and looked at his brothers. He looked absolutely, totally speechless. His mouth opened and closed twice before he could finally force the words out of his throat.
"She is pregnant."
I should have known.
