Chapter 29: Chapter 29. Part of the criminals
Eldorath Empire.
Southern Continent.
Hessington State.
Hale Town.
The evening breeze brushed past. The twin moons were now revealing themselves in the clouds.
Somewhere, a dog barked. Occasional giggles and chatter of people rung past the place.
Several houses lined the place, stretching for as far as the eyes could see.
A brown-haired, black-eyed, tall, fair-skinned handsome fellow stood before the bar.
He scanned his surroundings.
"For a town with kidnappings occurring here, this place is oddly peaceful. It’s either the occurrences are too much that the townspeople have grown used to them, or it’s been a while since something like this happened," Aiden thought. "The best place to find information about places like this is a bar."
Aiden walked into the bar.
The sounds of music and chatter greeted him.
The alcohol smell was strong in the place. Glasses clang.
Somewhere, a man could be seen flirting away with a lady.
The inside of the bar was not too luxurious. But it was not shabby either.
The waiter saw him.
Aiden sat down.
"Need a drink?" he asked.
Aiden nodded politely. In order to avoid suspicion and blow his cover, he had to order something.
"Glass of water will do for now."
"Right," the man said.
A few minutes later, a glass full of water sat before Aiden.
Aiden took a sip of the glass of water.
But he was listening to the conversations happening in the bar, trying to understand the situation of the town better.
For all he knew, some of the higher-ups in the town could be involved in what was happening. This was why he did not head to the sheriff’s office for information. If he did that, they could alert the criminals, and the criminals would not step foot in the town as long as he was around.
The mission stated he was to eliminate the criminals, not keep them out of the town while he was there.
As Aiden listened, all sorts of mundane conversations brewed. Someone cursed about his nagging wife.
Another said naughty things to a woman he was flirting with.
A woman drowned herself in alcohol over a breakup.
Aiden was patient.
He listened from his seat, as if he was just drinking water.
Then someone said something to another.
"It’s been a while since those criminals showed up."
"Yeah, how long has it been," the other fellow said, "6 months, right? Everything is back to normal."
"Indeed. I’m sure the sheriff’s office dealt with them," another replied. "Last time they were here, they murdered someone in broad daylight. Four of them are intermediate rank 1 warriors, after all. Instead of registering with a warrior university and going through the warrior system, they decided to go rogue and commit crimes. What a bunch of fuckers."
"Last time they were here, the sheriff could do nothing to them. He’s not a warrior, after all. I don’t know how they managed to deal with the criminals, but it’s all good now," someone said.
"Indeed. This town has suffered too much lately because of those fuckers," someone sighed as she drunk a whole bottle of whiskey.
Aiden listened quietly.
"It seems my second theory was on point. It’s been a while since an attack occurred. These townspeople assumed the sheriff’s office dealt with the attacks. Because of that, they have a false sense of peace. This explains the harmonious and peaceful environment I encountered outside. I don’t have a good feeling about this sheriff, though. The fact that he or she didn’t address the townspeople about the attacks hints at something. It’s either he’s too scared to give the people false hope, or he’s involved with the criminals and simply doesn’t care about the townspeople. For the sake of my mission, I will operate by assuming the worst. Let’s lean towards the second school of thought. If he’s not involved with them in the end, then I’ll find another alternative," Aiden thought.
He stood up and left the bar.
He had gotten the information he was here for.
"I should find a motel to settle in. No, that’s a bad idea. If I were these criminals, where would I hide?" Aiden thought. "Definitely not in town. If the sheriff is involved with them, then staying in town is a risk they can’t take. It will blow the sheriff’s cover. The only way forward is to monitor the sheriff’s house. I should stay nearby. Fortunately, there’s a motel near his house."
He proceeded to the motel, booked a room, and settled in.
Then, he narrowed his eyes. Aiden’s eyes turned crimson. He started scanning the vicinity outside the room. His scan spread outwards, eventually covering the sheriff’s house completely.
Aiden saw a woman and a man coming out of the house. They had flirtatious expressions.
The man was buttoning his shirt.
"Hurry up and leave, my husband would be home soon," the woman said. "If he catches us in the act, you have no idea what he’s capable of."
"What do you mean?" the man said. "Your husband is very weak. What can someone like him do to me?"
The woman sighed. It was as if she was about to say something. However, she stopped talking.
"All the same, leave." The man nodded, winked at the woman, entered his car, and bolted off.
The woman chuckled sweetly and entered the house again.
The affair the woman was having with the man who had just left was not the focus of Aiden.
But the woman’s expressions, and what she said about her husband.
If he catches us in the act, you have no idea of what he’s capable of.
"And that moment of hesitation. She was about to say something. But she stopped. The sheriff has a secret the wife knows that every other town member does not know"
"He’s a warrior. But why would he hide it from everyone?" Aiden thought. "It’s to create a weak front so that it looks like he cannot do anything about the kidnappings of the criminals. My second theory is most likely on point. The sheriff is part of the criminals. If possible, he’s even their leader. Besides, if criminals visit a town, the sheriff is most likely the first person they will get rid of. It does not make any sense that they kept him alive."
A glint of certainty flashed through his crimson eyes.
"All this points to the fact that he’s one of them. Now, all I need is to monitor the sheriff’s actions when he returns home, then I will know about the other criminals."
