Chapter 98: Lady of the house (2)
"Pardon me if this might be rude for saying this but you weren’t in your room when I came to say goodbye last night. Did you and Vincent go to the festival or did you sleep somewhere else?" Mari inquired while she did Aurora’s hair. She was surprised when Aurora hadn’t answered her calls from the bedroom door even though someone told her Vincent had taken Aurora upstairs.
"It’s not what you think. He took me to an attic window so that I could watch the festival last night. I ended up falling asleep in his room and he took me to a guest room to sleep instead of waking me up. Did you attend the festival after you left?" Aurora asked in an effort to switch the subject. She was eating her breakfast while Mari did her hair in her bedroom since Vincent had left the home and Aurora did not want to eat alone at the large table. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
Aurora was trying to get rid of a memory from last night when she woke up as Vincent was trying to carry her back to her room. Instead of telling him, she was awake, Aurora closed her eyes and pretended to be still asleep. What made it awkward was the fact that she knew Vincent knew she was awake that entire time.
"I did. I was lucky enough to catch up to my parents and siblings. I got to enjoy all the treats I was looking forward to and I bought a couple of bracelets. They weren’t expensive enough to brag about but they are beautiful. I bought one for you but forgot to bring it. Next time, I hope we can go to the festival together. There are so many things to show you."
"Deal," Aurora agreed. In the short time she knew Mari, she had truly enjoyed the girl’s presence. Mari was nothing but positive about everything. A hardworking girl looking to change her family’s circumstances. "What is it like outside the gates? I imagine there isn’t a human in sight for a long distance but what else is there outside the gates?"
"Mostly vampires. We have a terrible history with those creatures and I hope you never have to see one of them."
Aurora remained quiet because she had already come across a vampire. Seth had shown her his other side on the night of the harvest moon festival. "Why is the world always so divided?" she asked herself.
Why couldn’t vampires and werewolves just get along? Why couldn’t humans and Gods get along with each other? Why was the world so difficult?
"I’m not sure what exactly started the feud between vampires and werewolves but it has been going on for several generations and I don’t think it will stop anytime soon. Some people just weren’t meant to get along with each other. Vincent told me you wish to plan a dinner party tomorrow night. Cherry and Victor are on the guest list so far." Mari spoke to Vincent just as she arrived this morning and the man had given her the task of making sure Aurora got whatever she wanted for the dinner. ’Oh to be spoiled,’ she sulked, a tad jealous of Aurora’s life.
"It doesn’t have to be tomorrow night. He said two days in the moment but I think it’s going to need a few more days to make it perfect. He has such a large dining table but so far I only have two guests," Aurora paused to think of who else to invite. "We should invite Jane, the gardener Peter, Derek, and you."
"Me? Isn’t it weird for your worker to be seated at the table? I’ll still have to help you on that day." Mari had never seen anyone welcome their workers to sit at the table. She didn’t want Aurora to be talked about by anyone behind her back for doing such a strange thing.
"I’m perfectly capable of dressing myself and eating on my own that day. You are one of the few friends I have here so please accept the invitation to have dinner with us. If you’re worried about Vincent, I will talk to him about it. It’s up to you to make the decision in the end and I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable. Maybe think it over?" Aurora knew how society worked separating two classes of people but she didn’t agree with all of these unwritten rules.
She looked at Mari as a friend and wanted the girl to take a break from trying to pay off her family’s debt and have a nice dinner.
"I accept the invitation. You have a nice heart Aurora," Mari became even more worried that many would take advantage of Aurora’s kindness. Aurora living with Vincent had already made her a target for others to get close to the man.
When Mari visited the festival last night, the majority of the conversations were about the mysterious woman seen with Vincent during the day. Some wanted to know if Aurora would be his future wife or if she was just a captive since she wasn’t a wolf. They hoped Vincent wouldn’t marry a human but Mari hoped for the opposite. She couldn’t wait for the day when Aurora and Vincent become a couple. The house was dull right now and a touch of romance could help liven it up.
"Done," Mari said after doing all of Aurora’s hair into one long braid so that it wouldn’t annoy her during the day. "Now that your hair is done and you have eaten breakfast, what do you want to do now?" She asked while taking up the empty plate from Aurora’s desk.
"Look around the house a little bit more. I haven’t seen much of the rooms yet and we still have to plan the dinner. The braid looks lovely," Aurora said, using her fingers to follow along with what Mari did with her hair. "I want to take a look at the garden to make sure Peter has watered the roses."
Aurora stood up from her seat and walked to the door followed not too far behind by Mari. As she opened her bedroom door, there were two maids walking past, and once they saw her, they bowed and ran off.
"That was odd," Aurora muttered, confused by their behavior.
