"Your hair is really beautiful. I’ve never seen anyone with hair this white for your age," Mari said brushing through Aurora’s hair while she sat in a tub. "What was life like out there? Beyond our gates."
Aurora remained silent for a moment because she had lived the majority of her life stuck in a house and only went outside when Minnie was in a good mood to take her along. However, she didn’t want to ruin Mari’s curiosity. "It was fun with my younger sister. The festival is one thing I was looking forward to because it was once a year to celebrate the harvest of crops. I’m sure you would love it."
"We have a festival here too. The campfire party was last night but tonight, there will be a festival. The moon is really important to us wolves so no one celebrates it more than us. You came at the right time."
"What connection does the moon have with wolves? I’ve seen that Vincent looks different under the moon. Can all of you appear like that?" Aurora asked.
"No no. Vincent is the only one who can completely transform into a true werewolf which makes him the perfect alpha. The rest of us can transform into a wolf if we have a deep connection to the wolf inside of us. The rest of Vincent’s family can only transform a small part of their body into a werewolf. Some of them are upset he became the alpha at such a young age when it should’ve belonged to someone else. Oops! I’m sorry for gossiping," Mari smacked her mouth to refrain from speaking anymore.
"It’s okay. I don’t know anything about Vincent or anyone else here so your words are helpful. I would love to know who I should stay away from because of their relationship with Vincent. I don’t want to run into any trouble here if you don’t mind."
Mari continued to speak freely now that Aurora gave her permission to. "His uncle is the one you should stay away from the most. With Vincent’s father dead, his uncle was supposed to be the one in charge but to everyone’s surprise, Vincent showed up as the werewolf. The elders knew that it was a sign of who the true alpha was, so Vincent became our leader. Vincent always butt heads with his uncle when they cross paths."
"How did Vincent’s parents die?" Aurora questioned as it didn’t seem likely both of them would easily die.
Mari slowed her movements brushing Aurora’s hair. "We have a long history fighting against vampires and his parents always risked their lives to protect everyone. I was always told of how their heroic efforts saved all of us. They died in the last battle we had but since then, Vincent has changed up our community and helped us prepare better with protecting ourselves. We haven’t had big fights against the vampires in a while but sometimes they would come in small groups and try to kidnap some of us."
"I see," Aurora replied, now understanding more about the history between Vincent and Seth. No wonder they hated each other. "What happens to the people who are kidnapped by the vampires?"
"Sometimes Vincent successfully rescues them, some are killed, and if it was a young child they are treated as a pet for vampires. That is why we have a lot of rules about going outside the gates and why it is so dangerous for my parents. We have guards placed around and outside the gates so it is a little bit safer now. I hope all of this hasn’t scared you into not wanting to be here." Vincent might fire her for making Aurora want to run away. Mari saw her paycheck slipping between her fingers for her reckless talking.
"I honestly don’t know what I feel," Aurora honestly replied. This was a whole new world for her and she never could have imagined these types of things were happening. Especially when history said the kings wiped out everyone who was not human.
"How about I take you around for a tour for you to see what living here is like? You would have to ask Vincent for permission since he might not want you around others because they don’t take too kindly to outsiders. Even though you might’ve lived here before, not everyone knows you or about you. I didn’t. So many will be confused about why Vincent brought you here. Many of the-" Mari stopped herself because it wouldn’t be a bright idea for her to tell Aurora this. "I am finished with your hair. I will leave and give you the privacy to bathe in peace."
Aurora was confused by Mari’s sudden change in behavior and watched the young girl leave the bathroom. What was Mari going to tell her just now? "I shouldn’t have expected there wouldn’t be any drama here."
Aurora sank into the tub until the water reached under her bottom lip. It was crazy to think she was now living amongst wolves and away from Regina. She wondered if Minnie had found out Regina helped her escape and if Samuel was fine after being hit in the head twice. There was no way for her to communicate with Regina without getting caught. Her stomach grumbling as she had not eaten anything in a while shifted her thoughts from Regina back to her current situation. Vincent said breakfast was waiting for her to be finished first and it would be rude to keep him waiting.
Aurora hurried along with her bath and then left to go back to her closest where Mari helped her pick out a dress and did her hair.
"You would make such a beautiful princess or a good lady of this house," Mari cheered after seeing how Aurora looked after helping her get ready. Her secret plan was to make Aurora even more beautiful to surprise Vincent.
