Chapter 248: Calm before the storm (1)
"Having fun?" Vicent asked as Aurora approached him with Cherry right by her side. Abigail continued to hold on to his hand as he spoke.
"A lot of fun. It was nice to dance around with everyone but I didn’t expect them to join me. It appears you are having fun too," Aurora said as she caught sight of Vincent dancing with Abigail. "You never told me you had powers, little one. I could never get Vincent to dance with me."
"Really?" Abigail’s eyes lit up.
"It is nothing special," Vincent muttered. There was nothing special about him dancing for it to be brought up again. "Rest your feet after all the dancing you did. I have never seen anyone so energetic while almost falling into a fire."
"I can’t help how nervous I was to dance out there. I have never danced in front of a large crowd like this. Thankfully, I didn’t fall."
"Yea, we wouldn’t want Vincent fighting the fire to avenge you," Cherry whispered though she knew everyone would be able to hear.
"Hilarious," Vincent muttered with a sarcastic tone.
"I find it to be sweet. Not everyone finds a partner who would go through such lengths as Vincent has to protect or save me. That is why I love him. Even when he is grumpy," Aurora confessed.
Cherry shrugged her shoulders. "Well, there had to be someone out there for everyone. I thought Vincent would end up with someone as equally grumpy as he is. Could you imagine how draining it would be for me to dress them up?"
"I find Vincent to be grumpy when all of you are around. It is how much you annoy him that brings out his grumpy side. Instead of the comments made towards Vincent, try being a little nicer and then he will be the same," Aurora advised the group.
There was always one-sided talk about Vincent’s attitude and everyone dismissed the things they said. If Vincent was not such a confident person their words could have had a negative effect on him.
"He is already scrutinized by people here who don’t agree with his methods of protecting them. Although this is the way your friendship has always been it would be nice to speak good things to Vincent once in a while. I have to admit, the jokes would make me become grumpy. Vincent, you should also say nice things to your friends once in a while," Aurora said, watching as the tiny smile on his lips turned into a frown.
Clearly, he was only expecting her to scold the others.
"I suppose I am a little hard on my brother with the jokes sometimes. You’re tough because of the responsibility on your shoulders. Not only as the alpha and leader but taking on the role of a parent for me over the years. Thank you," Victor patted his brother’s back.
Though a hug would be better, they had not shown such affection to each other after their parents died. It would be too awkward for Victor to do this while there was a crowd of people silently watching them.
"Whatever you and Aurora need me to do tomorrow, I will do it without any complaints. I will start working with you again to share some of the responsibilities you have," said Victor.
Vincent was the alpha, the one who led the pack but there were many ways Victor could act as a leader in the community. Victor knew of Vincent’s dislike of being the leader and instead of helping Vincent, he thought only of himself and played around.
Victor always felt like his father would be disappointed if he were to know what his second son had become. Luckily, time was on his hands as he could start making up for what he failed to do.
"About time you stepped up," Vincent placed Victor in a headlock.
"This is the opposite of what Aurora just told us to do. Aurora," Victor whined, begging for her to save him.
"Vincent, please release your brother. It is like dealing with children. In fact, the children are much better than the two of you. You can continue your positive talk but I am going to sit down," Aurora walked around Victor and Vincent to sit where Jane was. "For your sake Jane, I hope your child will be a girl."
"Quite frankly, I don’t care about gender. I just want a healthy baby. It’s Abigail and Tara I need to keep an eye out for. They seem to enjoy Vincent and Victor but I would not be able to handle the siblings constantly fighting one another. My sister and 1 were at war when we were younger. We still are now," Jane said as she took a trip down memory lane.
"Why have I not come across your mother or sister yet?" Aurora was curious to meet the woman meddling in Jane and Derek’s marriage.
"You probably won’t since they have distanced themselves after we took in the children. My sister and I have always been in competition to please our mother so we grew apart as the years went by. I stopped feeding into the life my mother had planned out for me but my sister didn’t. Still, I listened to criticize everything about my marriage," said Jane.
"Sounds controlling," Aurora muttered but she didn’t know if Jane’s mother was that bad compared to Rachel. Still, what was this obsession mothers had to dictate every move in their daughters’ life?
"It was controlling. It is odd how my father is the complete opposite of my mother and didn’t care when I told him I was going to work for Vincent. We shouldn’t pick favorites but I can’t help loving my father more. Does that make me a bad person?" Jane looked to Aurora for the answer.
"No. You’re allowed to love the parent who lets you be you more. Werewolves are practically immortal so there is a lot of time for you and your mother to work on your relationship. She cannot distance herself because of the humans forever," Aurora said, causing Jane to laugh.
"If you ever meet my mother, you’ll see why it’s possible for her to distance herself from me till the day she dies. She cares about others’ opinions and until other werewolves start liking those two little ones, she won’t come around."
Aurora couldn’t understand why the community was this way. As someone created by the moon Goddess the werewolves worshiped, she wondered if Artemis’s anger towards humans caused the wolves to be this way. These werewolves are descendants of humans Artemis cursed to live as werewolves.
The same creatures here who bore such hatred towards humans were half-humans themselves. Did werewolves not look into the mirror to see what they looked like on a daily basis?
"I know many creatures hate humans for trying to hunt them down but still, how can werewolves not have any love for the good humans? You used to mate with humans. Aren’t they aware that’s why many of them are without a partner? Their mates aren’t werewolves and they must look elsewhere starting with humans," Aurora explained.
"There must be a world where humans and creatures like us can walk around together without being hunted. A world where a werewolf can be themself out in the open and not have humans running around screaming. I don’t think a world like that would ever. No one wants to reveal what they are to humans," Jane knew it was something she would never do.
Aurora leaned back, placing both her hands on the ground to keep her body in place. "What if someone forces such a world to exist?"
Aurora knew Artemis planned to expose this hidden world to humans and make them live among the same creatures they died to kill for many years. It was Artemis’s way of getting rid of the peace only the regular folk had.
"I hope I am alive long enough to see that world. Tara, do not pick that up!" Jane yelled, stopping the younger girl before she could take up a piece of wolf fur from the ground. "You have no idea who that came from."
"It feels like I am not spending enough time with my woman tonight. Why is there always someone else by your side, Aurora?" Vincent asked as he took a seat right by her side. "Are you running away from me?"
"Maybe. I enjoy being chased by the big bad wolf."
Vincent grinned, having a devious thought. "I did not know you were into role play Aurora. Shall I shift and chase you around our home when we return?" ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
Aurora blushed due to the fact he said this out in the open where others would clearly hear them. "Vincent, I did not mean that in a sexual way. Must you always change my words to mean something sexual? Are you sex deprived, Vincent?"
"If everyone stopped interrupting us, I wouldn’t be. It cannot be helped each time I am near you, I can only think of touching you. Are you the same way, Aurora?"
