Chapter 212: Dear uncle (3)
’Derek is hiding something from me,’ Victor thought as he walked up the stairs of Graham’s home.
Now that his emotions had calmed down and he was thinking straight he started to realize Derek’s behavior was a little odd. He had been around Derek for a long time and knew the man to be super emotional when it came to death.
’His behavior was like he wasn’t worried about Vincent but why would he play with me like this? And if Vincent is alright why would they send me here?’ Victor thought to himself.
He wasn’t sure what was going on or what to believe but he was going to keep playing along and hoped at some point Vincent’s illness would be revealed to be a lie.
"Please," he muttered before knocking on Graham’s door. Never would he have imagined coming to Graham for comfort.
"Is that you, Victor?" Cecilia asked as she opened the front door.
"Yes," Victor replied.
"Come inside quickly. I had something prepared for you as you probably have not eaten," she stepped to the side to allow him in.
"Thank you but I ate something light already. Nothing is staying down unfortunately as I cannot eat at a time like this. I’m sorry to have wasted your time," he apologized.
Victor made it a priority to eat something before his stay. If they really were the ones to poison Vincent there was a possibility of him suffering the same fate.
"I understand Victor. You have always been a sweet boy. When my aunt was killed I locked myself away in my room and didn’t eat for two days. When I finally started eating again it was like the food didn’t taste like anything. It’ll get better soon," Cecilia patted him on the back to cheer him up.
"How did your aunt die if you don’t mind me asking? You don’t have to say anything."
Cecilia waved her hand around to stop him from apologizing as it wasn’t a big deal to her. "My aunt loved defending her people and was killed in a fight against vampires. She was like a mother to me so it really hurt but I came to terms with her death a long time ago. She died doing what she loved."
"I’m sure she is happy to know how much you cared for her. I’m sorry for your loss. Vincent seems to be holding on so I don’t wish to think negatively," said Victor.
"I completely understand. Your uncle went out to calm down a few people who came to him extremely worried about Vincent. You can go rest up and I’ll let him know you’ve arrived," she led him to a guest room on the first floor. "Just know that I am here for you when you need me."
"Thank you once again. I will get some rest now."
Victor closed the door after Cecilia finally left him alone. He looked around the small room and found it to be just enough. The first floor was the best place for him to be. He could listen out for when his uncle and Cecilia were leaving or when they had a visitor. Though he doubted they would be stupid enough to invite someone important over while he was there.
Victor dropped his bag on the floor and fell face down on the bed to drift off to sleep, preferring not to be awake with his thoughts. They weren’t positive right now.
Like a blink of an eye, the next day had arrived already. When Victor opened the door of his room he was immediately greeted by Graham who wanted to visit Vincent.
’He’s really playing the part of a caring uncle. If only he had been like this from the beginning and not done such evil things,’ Victor said to himself.
They were now both on the way to Vincent’s home in a carriage instead of walking there to avoid the people on the street with many questions.
Victor appreciated their concern but wished they would take a hint that he had no answers to their questions. Who would at a time like this when their family was close to death? Some of the people weren’t concerned and only looked for gossip.
"They’re all anxious about what will happen but you can’t blame them. Nothing to this extent has happened to Vincent. Many believed him to be some sort of God but they were wrong," Graham said as he looked out the carriage window at the people trying to look in.
He continued to say, "I remember crowds like this when your father died. It’s always depressing. No matter how much Vincent and I bicker, I promised your father I would look after him but I am failing."
Victor wanted to tell Graham to shut up about his fake care for Vincent as he had always hated his own brother and nephew. He clenched his fists resisting the urge to reach over and claw at Graham’s throat.
’If this is all a plot by Vincent, he must want Graham alive and I can’t ruin it,’ Victor chanted in his head.
This was the hardest task he had ever faced. He could kill Graham at any moment but still couldn’t.
"Are you listening to me, Victor?" Graham asked when he noticed Victor digging his fingers into his palm. "Are you upset about something? Did my words anger you?"
"What? No. I just get upset about the entire situation. Don’t mind me," Victor accidentally laughed.
Fortunately, it made Graham think that Victor was anxious. "Whatever happens I will be here for you. The entire community will be here for you and we will find the person who did this."
"Thank you."
"We’re here. Let’s go see your brother," Graham exited the carriage when it stopped in front of Vincent’s and pretended to be sad to the small crowd waiting outside.
"Tell us what happened."
"Are we going to be safe without the alpha?"
"Vampires will attack us if they know there is something wrong with him."
"People, please calm down," Graham told the crowd. Victor used this as an opportunity to sneak inside. "I am now here to check what is happening. Once we know what is going on we will make an announcement to the community. Please give us some time to figure this out."
"He must be dead if you are hiding it from us!"
"Tell us the truth."
"Those humans he allowed in cursed him!" The crowd continued to yell.
"He is not dead-"
"Vincent Lawrence has passed away!" Derek came outside to announce at that moment.
The murmuring among the crowd increased as many discussed Vincent’s death. Victor was shaken up while Graham was in disbelief.
’That brute is finally dead?’ Graham wondered.
He did not believe it but Victor’s reaction was all too real. ’Finally,’ Graham mentally cheered. He was so close to having what he always wanted.
As long as Victor did not want to become the leader or possessed the ability to transform into the alpha the position was Graham’s.
"N-No," Victor stuttered, running inside while ignoring the people calling his name. "You’re lying," he said as he brushed pass Derek.
Graham followed right behind Victor to see with his own eyes that Vincent truly was dead. Only then would he act upon becoming the leader and getting rid of Victor if he needed to.
Now that someone claimed the two humans were the ones to curse Vincent he was going to act upon that.
When Victor entered the home he found all the workers hugging each other and crying. It was hitting him hard that Vincent was gone and this had not been a trick to get Graham. freeweɓnøvel.com
Victor couldn’t move his feet from where he stood but it wasn’t the same for Graham.
Graham rushed upstairs excited to see his nephew dead. He didn’t care how he looked to others now as with Vincent dead no one could stop him from doing whatever he wanted.
Derek grabbed the arm of a shaken-up Victor and placed his finger over his lips for Victor to not say a word. Derek then handed him a piece of paper before leaving.
Confused, Victor read what was on the paper and became wide-eyed when he saw what was there.
’Vincent is alive. We’re going to get rid of Graham.’
"What on earth..." Victor trailed off looking at Derek as he walked away and noticed the workers dropped their act of crying. ’It was all set up,’ he thought.
"Hahaha," he laughed, feeling relieved that it wasn’t real. He still had his older brother.
Meanwhile, Graham opened the door of Vincent’s room and went to the bed.
"It’s true," he said, looking down at the state of Vincent. It was like life was sucked out of him. He had to thank the person who made the poison for him. "My biggest regret was not killing you with my own hands after you stole what was mine."
"Say hello to my brother and his wife when you see them in the underworld," Graham grinned.
