Chapter 209: Puppet master (3)
"I wonder if Minnie is grilling Samuel right now. Serves him right for getting on my nerves."
Regina didn’t feel bad for exposing Samuel’s plans to Minnie. Unlike her, everyone would forgive Samuel easily while it would take a decade for them to forgive her for helping Aurora.
All eyes were on their family for the moment Samuel would inherit a great deal of business and choose a wife to carry on the Hamilton name. Minnie couldn’t punish Samuel forever. However, she could fool him and make him know what it’s like to lose everything.
Samuel wasn’t smart enough to grasp how much Minnie needed him. As the only son in the family, they needed him to bring in a rich wife to expand their wealth.
It wouldn’t be smart to depend on Regina’s husband as she would tell the man to never help her family.
"If I were in Samuel’s position I would be making a whole lot of demands. He’s the one who should have been in a rush to marry," said Regina.
All Samuel needed to do was choose a young girl with a wealthy background. He would be given some of the wealth and his wife’s father would have backed him up. A son-in-law running the Hamilton would be enough for Samuel to quietly sit back while his wife’s family plotted against Minnie.
"Maybe I have just read too many drama novels. I haven’t read one in a long time."
"Read what?" Nathaniel appeared out of nowhere. He had been meaning to talk to Regina since breakfast but didn’t think she would want to speak to him. "Regina, do you mind speaking to your foolish father?"
"It depends. If you are going to fail me again, no. It was already hard enough with one parent letting me down. I’m over the wine shop if that is all you want to talk about." Regina didn’t care to fight over the wine shop when it was so easily taken from her.
From now on, she’ll only care about things in her name. Things that no one could snap their fingers and suddenly decide they want back.
"I have to talk about what went down at breakfast and I just received an interesting letter. I cannot spoil what it is about but I need to find out if it is something you want." Nathaniel not too long ago received a letter from Timothy regarding Regina’s hand in marriage.
Though his daughter was entertaining Timothy, Nathaniel knew how much she was against marriage and no longer wanted her to go through with anything if she didn’t want to. This was his way of trying to apologize for always being a coward.
"Letter?" Regina muttered. The only thing she could think of was Timothy most likely asking for permission to marry her. "Is it about me getting married?"
"Yes, well. After everyone saw you with Timothy I received a lot of letters but ignored all of them. The majority of them are only sending them because of Timothy-"
"Father, you are making it sound like I was not a hot catch before Timothy showed a little interest in me. Regina Hamilton will always be sought after," she said in a serious tone as a joke but when her father started to fidget she laughed so he got the hint. "I’m messing you, father." freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Regina knew men had an ego and loved to compete around this time. They had some weird obsession with going after girls their peers were interested in and trying to steal them away. Regina didn’t see the point of it but boys were weird so there wouldn’t be any logic behind their actions.
"How are you always able to make me sweat, child? I really need to speak with you in private so that we do not let this become bigger than it has to. I am envious of you, Regina. Somehow you grew up to speak your mind to the very woman I have always been terrified of. I know it’s laughable a grown man is scared of his mother-"
"If I was an outsider, I might’ve laughed at the situation you are in but I know Minnie. Not as much as you do and I can’t imagine living with her as much as you did. Although I am angry you don’t stick up for me in front of Minnie, I realize I have no idea why you can’t."
Regina remembered the way Esmeralda died and how she regretted Minnie being raised by her father and husband. Regina knew Minnie killed her own husband and probably wouldn’t care to hurt her other family members. It took her long enough to realize Minnie cared more about the family name than the family.
Instead of being annoyed with her father, they should have all been asking what Minnie did to him.
"Well," Nathaniel scratched the back of his head, not sure where to start. "I used to be a troublesome child at first but I think that’s how most children are. Running around, trying to figure out how everything in the world worked but my mother has always preferred us to be well behaved," said Nathaniel.
’Us?’ Regina thought. To her, it sounded like he was talking about more than one person.
"I-"
"There you are," a fuming Rachel interrupted Nathaniel. She was looking for Regina after Samuel said it was Regina who told everything to Minnie. "I had enough of your rudeness."
"I would really appreciate it if you keep her away from me," Regina said before going to stand behind her father. She was anticipating Samuel would tell their mother before she returned to her bedroom.
"What are you upset about now, Rachel?" Nathaniel immediately went into a protective mood. He could never understand why after all his talks with Rachel that she was always against Regina. If anything, the mother and daughter should see eye to eye.
"She’s upset Minnie found out she and Samuel have been plotting behind her back and going to all of Minnie’s associates."
"What?" Nathaniel was pissed to hear his own wife was doing something like this behind his back. "I told the two of you not to do anything careless. Samuel would be given a large amount of wealth when he got married. You only needed to find a wife."
"Why can’t he get all that he deserves? Let’s be honest: we’ll only get what belongs to us when Minnie dies. How much longer do I have to sit like a child in this house? I want everything now!" Rachel yelled, still trying to reach Regina.
"Us? Samuel and Regina have things to inherit. Not you. You get your monthly allowance as all the other wives do. Only if we separate would you get money but I hate to break it to you that it’s not as much as you are thinking." In Nathaniel’s opinion, it would benefit Rachel to sit quietly and accept the monthly allowance.
"As your wife, I am deserving of the world for sticking by your side and keeping all the disgusting secrets your family has. I will not stay put if I do not get what is owed to me. If you would’ve gotten rid of your mother like I told you to, I wouldn’t be this desperate!" Rachel yelled out not caring about the workers hearing what was said.
"Rachel!" Nathaniel exclaimed. "Are you still here because you love me or are you only looking for money? The money we got in the past from your parents is small compared to what you are trying to go after. I warned you not to mess with my mother but you still did and worst of all, you involved Samuel."
Nathaniel had never been more furious in his life. He told Rachel what his mother was like and yet she thought just her and Samuel could outsmart Minnie? If it was that simple he wouldn’t have feared Minnie for this long. "Go straight to my mother and apologize. Get down on your knees."
"I will never apologize to that woman," Rachel said through gritted death. She would rather die than apologize to Minnie ever again. "It’s about time you stop being your mother’s puppet and stand up for yourself!"
"The same way you have made our son become your puppet? You are ruining his chances. Our son is becoming a coward like me because of his overbearing mother. Do not include Samuel in your mess or Minnie will be the last of your worries. I mean it," he added when Rachel started to laugh.
"What will you do Nathaniel? Give me an earful scolding like you always do? I don’t care-"
"You there!" Nathaniel called to a passing by male worker.
"Yes sir?"
"Take my wife up to our bedroom and lock her in there. If she doesn’t go willingly I give you permission to drag her by her hair up the stairs-"
"Nathaniel," Rachel said, full of surprise.
"Have someone guard the door and see to it that she has no visitors. Any workers I learn going to her room will be fired and I will see to it you never find work again. Take her," Nathaniel ordered the man.
He didn’t care how Rachel was looking at him. He only cared to keep her away from Samuel.
