Chapter 208: Puppet master (2)
With Minnie and Duncan out of sight, Samuel released his frustration by kicking down the chair Regina previously sat in and the table. He huffed pulling up a small tree the gardener had recently transplanted for it to grow in the garden.
Samuel repeatedly used the tree to smash the table and chairs he had thrown over. "She ruined everything. I was so close to getting everything," he hit the chair with each word.
He didn’t care if Minnie would be upset with him for destroying her furniture. Minnie took everything he worked hard for in a second. With her commands, no one would dare go against her and allow him to continue working.
"I want that power," said Samuel.
When he was younger he wanted to be a knight for the king instead of dealing with the family business but it was his mother who convinced him his dream of being a knight was foolish.
As the only son of his father, he had to throw away his dreams to follow in his father’s footsteps. His friends laughed at him for getting upset about giving up being a knight as they were in the same predicament. Sons of prominent families who had a duty to take on the family business. Now that he cast what he wanted aside, Samuel wanted his father’s position as promised but Minnie was the true heir. She made all the decisions and everyone else followed without a word.
"I am not a fool," he said, annoyed with Minnie’s words. "It wasn’t right for her to use Regina as a way to criticize me. I am smarter than Regina. Look at the state Regina is in."
’What state? She’s about to be married to one of the richest men in the kingdom. She’s doing better than you are,’ a little voice in his head said.
"Shut up," Samuel smacked his ears to get rid of the voice. He started hearing it a few weeks ago. All it did was remind him of his insecurities. He didn’t like that after everything he did Regina would end up being better than him. He was meant to be the sibling seeing wealth soon.
"Minnie probably does not know Regina wants to marry Timothy. I can’t allow them to get married unless it benefits me. Why else would Timothy be interested in Regina? I am the one who went to him with a plan. She should be thanking me for hooking up such a big husband but she turned Timothy against me."
Samuel wasn’t going to let Regina expose his plan and get away from it. He loved his younger sister but right now, money was more important. They could rekindle their bond when everything was his.
Regina wasn’t as smart as everyone liked to believe. He was going to protect her from Minnie had she worked with him but she exposed his plan to Minnie. Now, it would be harder to get rid of Minnie.
"Samuel? What on earth happened to the garden chairs and table?" Rachel asked as she was taken aback by everything destroyed. "Your hands are covered with dirt. Are you crazy? Why would you do this when Minnie is home?"
"She knows mother. Minnie knows we have been going behind her back to get her followers on my side," Samuel started to unbutton his dirty shirt.
Rachel’s eyes widened hearing this. "I have told you to always be careful Samuel. How could you let her find it out? Do you have any idea what will happen to you?"
"Why did you go straight into blaming me? I am not the one who slipped up and I doubt Minnie will care about the broken furniture. If she does, I do not care. She has already stopped me from going to the wine shop, all the other businesses, and the meetings father has. What more can she take from me?"
Out of anger, Rachel stormed over to Samuel to smack him in the face. She put too much time and effort into him for him to end up like this. "Why are you so nonchalant Samuel? Do you have any idea what position this puts me in!" She exclaimed.
She would be more at risk than Samuel because of how much Minnie hated her. Samuel might get a second chance but Rachel did not share the luxury. "You stupid child," she smacked him in the face over and over again. freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"I am not stupid!" Samuel yelled, grabbing his mother’s hand to stop her assault. "I Have always been careful with everything I did. Regina is the one who just told Minnie about my plans."
Rachel pinched the bridge of her nose. This was why she told Samuel many things to not mention what he was doing to anyone else. "When I give you advice, why does it go into one ear and then out the other? You should have never said anything to that girl. The first chance she got, she exposed you. I need to speak with Minnie."
"That won’t be a good idea. She said if you come to her yelling about changing her mind, you will be thrown out. It’s best you remain out of her sight for the next few days. You must also inform my father so that he can protect you."
"Samuel, do you honestly think I would use you if I could rely on my husband? Your father does not have a spine when it comes to his mother. I must have been crazy to think you would be able to successfully do as you were told. All the men in this family are useless. Minnie will be quick to get rid of me," Rachel started to panic.
She had to think quickly in order to guarantee nothing would be done against her. She knew many family secrets thanks to eavesdropping on many conversations and things she personally witnessed. If she couldn’t have the wealth owed to her due to how long she was married to Nathaniel then no one else should have it.
"Why are you only thinking of yourself, mother? I was in a great position doing everything Minnie wanted until you asked me to backstab her. Why are you only concerned about yourself when I have been robbed of what belongs to me?" Samuel asked out of frustration.
Regina was jealous of the love their mother gave to him but if she only knew how suffocating it was. Why was he responsible for giving his mother what she desired? How was it fair he had to give up his dreams to please his mother? After all he did, she was only concerned about herself.
Samuel couldn’t help but laugh at his situation. He should have known she was only looking out for her best interests. He was doing the same. So were Minnie, Rachel, and their father.
The family love he saw when he was younger was merely an illusion. No one here cared for each other in his eyes. The only person who cared for his well-being was...
"I hate all of you," Samuel confessed.
"How dare you speak to your mother this way? I have a right to be concerned for myself when I am this close to getting kicked out," Rachel showed him a small space between her fingers. "I have done everything I could for you when you were growing up and now that you are older it is your turn to do everything for me"
"That’s not my job, mother. No matter how much you had done for me when I was a child. Your job as my mother was to take care of your child. That care is not something I am bound to repay by doing dirty things to ensure you obtain wealth. From now on, I will look out for myself, mother. I will show I am more capable than Regina."
Samuel tossed his dirty shirt on the ground for the servants to clean up when he leaves.
"Ha. I’ve never heard a more ridiculous thing in my life. Oh wait, there was the suggestion of making Aurora be your father’s daughter from outside the marriage. Nothing can be more ridiculous than that. You have no idea how many strings I pulled for you to be where you were. When you fail," Rachel spread out her arms. "You will come running back."
"Remember, no one compares to your mother’s knowledge. Drop the act of wanting to be an independent man when I have wiped your ass all your life. See to it that you carry on with the plan of getting Minnie out of here. If I have to do everything myself, I won’t keep anyone useless by my side even if they are my child," said Rachel.
Samuel clenched his fists feeling defeated before he could even abandon his mother. She was truly no different than Minnie when it came to using and tossing their own relatives aside. Samuel was determined to stop being the puppet and become the puppetmaster.
