Chapter 117: Worry (3)
"I would rather not fight against you sir," Carl backed away knowing it was foolish to try and go up against Vincent. The alpha was meant to be the strongest out of all of the wolves and if they had to go down in ranks, Carl was not close to Vincent. Not good when compared to his father and brother.
"I am only one person, Carl. Why be afraid?" Vincent smacked his chest initiating a fight between him and Carl. Carl’s father was an excellent fighter which was why Vincent didn’t mind taking on Carl. The potential in Carl was there but he was holding onto his father’s name and doing the bare minimum at the gate. "Your father’s glory will only get you so far Carl. You have to prove to many of us what you can do."
"I have proven enough by becoming a leader of one of the night guards groups. Not many have accomplished that. Even though you are one person, you are the alpha, Vincent. We both know it would be foolish for me to try and fight you." Carl was smart enough like every other wolf to know only an alpha should fight an alpha. He wasn’t going to join in Vincent’s madness.
Sure, he messed up by not alerting the other night guard groups on what he and his team picked up. And he shouldn’t have waited till morning to secretly send the note to Vincent and wait for the man to arrive to do something about the body. Yes, he had taken his job lightly when the lives of the people inside of the gates could be at stake because of him fooling around but he was still a capable man to have on the night guards. He was trained by his father after all and everyone here respected his father for his strategies against their enemies.
"Not many will accomplish it if they don’t have someone with your father’s success behind them. Your father went to my uncle to get you the position you have now. If it was handed to you so easily, at least work hard to make a name for yourself. Prove that you aren’t just living in your father’s shadow. It’s a shame to see men behind you trying their best but they have a leader who is a fool. How can they think straight when you’re no help?" Vincent wasn’t planning on fighting Carl right now. He was more trying to motivate him. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Carl was one of the many skilled men the community had to offer and it would hurt to have to fire him from being a night guard. However, he rather had a competent skilled man at the gates rather than a useless skilled man that got drunk when he was supposed to be working. If Carl didn’t allow this to light a fire under him, his place at the gates was done.
"I have never heard such nonsense as someone not worrying about one single vampire. A royal vampire can take out our gates with ease if we are not prepared. A single vampire with a good infiltration plan can get past this gate. You should never let your guard down just because you have run into a single vampire. They have never let their guard down when they saw one wolf. Next time you see something outside of these gates, run it by all of your fellow night guards."
"I will sir. Thank you for giving me another chance. I’ll do better when it comes to leading my group and proving to you, I can be useful to you. I’ll make a name for myself away from my father," Carl promised right here, right now he was going to change. His father always warned him Vincent wouldn’t care anything about last names and who your family was if he found you insufficient. If word got back to his father that he had messed up, he was done for.
Carl never expected Vincent would’ve thrown this mistake on him even though his lack of urgency to report the vampire and the dead body was on his part.
"Oh, I believe you will be making it up to me and showing me what you can do but not as a leader of a night guard group. That position no longer belongs to you. You’ll be joining Steven’s group and be under his command. Learn from him what you are supposed to do when given such an important job. Anyone who wants Carl’s old spot should approach me by the end of the day. Prepare to go back into training held personally to get you back into good shape."
Vincent looked around the men who were ready to complain amongst each other for having to go back into training again. They all went through it for many years and felt relieved when they passed. "If a vampire so much as comes near these gates and none of you act quickly to capture or kill it and report it to me right away, I will kill you in the vampire’s place. Any guard at the gates not taking the job seriously is a traitor in my eyes."
They were the first strongest line of defense a vampire or any other creature would have to go through to harm anyone else in the community. If they wanted to drink and play around, there were other jobs for them to take. "At the end of the training I will be conducting, those of you not performing well enough will lose your positions and your ranks will drop past delta. This goes for everyone," Vincent looked at Steven.
He wasn’t pleased that Steven had taken it upon himself to hunt down the vampire behind Carl’s back to make himself look better. They should be working together when they step foot at the gates and leave their personal problems elsewhere.
"Now if you’ll excuse me, I have other things to do," Vincent said before heading to his next destination. He had a list of places to visit before returning to his home. free𝑤ebnovel.com
"Come, Carl, I need to start helping you become like the rest of us. Wouldn’t want you making us get in trouble again," Steven teased now that Vincent was gone receiving a few laughs from his fellow guards. It was quite the sight to see Carls be woken up and have his role as a leader taken. Steven wasn’t worried about the training because he was confident he’ll end up back up as a leader or better.
"Haha. So funny I forgot how to laugh," Carl muttered clenching his fists as he got in line with Steven’s group. He didn’t miss how his old group had already moved on and started jumping at the chance to take his old spot. None of them felt apologetic for what happened to him. All they saw was an empty spot on a ladder for them to climb up to be closer to the alpha.
He should’ve exposed they were the ones who brought the drinks and snacks on the gates last night but it would just put him in an even worse position than he was in now. Regardless of whether they brought drinks, he should’ve reprimanded them and forced them to pay attention outside the gates. He should’ve gone after the vampire when one of his group members first spotted him. He should not have to listen to Steven right now. Carl became determined to reach higher than his old position and have everyone here listening to his orders.
Meanwhile, at Vincent’s home, Aurora had locked herself in the room in her closet to practice growing plants in peace. She grew worried about the wolf’s bane she had in her room and if it might be a bad thing to secretly have while living with wolves.
She had the witch spell on her bedroom but what if someone were to magically get in and see the plant? What would they think? That she was secretly creating a poison for them? That she was trying to harm Vincent?
Aurora placed her hand over the wolf’s bane because of her worry about it. "It might be better for me to burn this. No one would ever know I had it. Besides Vincent since he should know about this space and have been here before. But at the same time, what if I need to use it for protection? No one should ever be able to get in here. But I don’t want to cause a misunderstanding in the future."
She kept removing and placing her hand above the plant conflicted on what to do.
"If you’re going to kill me, just do it now," a voice suddenly spoke.
Aurora screamed and back away from her desk almost falling in the process until she realized it was the wolf’s bane plant speaking to her. "You just spoke to me," she told the plant. Each time this happened it felt amazing yet weird. Weird this time because she hadn’t purposely tried to make this happen.
"You’re the one that woke me up and now you’re confused by me talking."
Aurora knew if it was possible it would be rolling its eyes at her.
