Chapter 105: Problem (2)

"Is there someplace the two of you can go to be safe away from men like him? We can’t stay here any longer or the guards will find us next to his body. Where do you stay?" Derek squatted down to reach their eye level.

The oldest of the two girls pointed to a piece of cloth under the dead man’s foot. "Here. This is our home."

"I see," Derek said, pulling the cloth from under the man’s foot. It was covered in dirt and drops of fresh blood. "You can’t stay here or more bad men will come and try to take you to a dangerous place. Go to one of the orphanages in town and tell them about your situation."

He would like to take them but staying too long in the town was dangerous especially when he had no backup in case something were to go wrong. Vincent would be beyond piss if he were to be captured by the guards. "I have to go now but I want you to head there right now. Okay? Don’t stay here."

Derek started to leave so that the guards wouldn’t find him next to the man he killed with blood on his hands. Hopefully, the older girl will listen to his words and go to the orphanage right away.

He didn’t make it too far away from the girls when he heard two pairs of footsteps following behind him. "Please don’t tell me..." he trailed off slowly, turning around to confirm this. Unfortunately, the two little girls he saved were right behind him. "Oh no. The two of you can’t be following me. Where I’m going, don’t let in people like you."

"Unwanted children?" The older girl asked, repeating the words she heard the adults call her before. She wanted to go with the stranger so that he could protect her and her younger sister.

"No. You’re not unwanted children-"

"Yes, we are. That’s why our parents told us to wait here and never came back. They don’t want us anymore so I take care of my younger sister by stealing food. Are there any unwanted children where you come from?"

"That’s not what I meant." He was referring to the fact that they don’t allow humans to go inside of the community. Therefore, the girls won’t be able to follow him. It would be difficult for him to find them a place to stay back at home. There were rules he needed to follow.

"So, can we come with you? I took my sister to the orphanages and the adults weren’t kind to us."

Derek found himself in one predicament after the other. He was already behind his schedule to get back to Jane by tonight. Had he ignored the situation earlier, the girls wouldn’t be trying to follow him now but he wasn’t the type of person to watch children in danger and do nothing.

He needed them to find a better orphanage so they would be safe but he couldn’t stay for too long. "I’m sure there’s somewhere you can go to be safe? Have you tried telling the guards? They’re here to help you." ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

"They just push away. We’ve been waiting for Alexander to come back to the town. He brings coins to the other orphan children. Can’t we really go with you? No one here protects us," the sister pleaded. The younger sister hardly spoke given her age and experiences in the world.

"If I could, I would save you in a heartbeat but the worst things can happen to you where I am from. I’m sorry but I have to go," Derek apologized, turning around to go on his way back home. He sighed when the pair of footsteps started to follow behind him again and there was nothing he could do unless he tied the two girls up and dropped them off at an orphanage.

The only reason Derek did not go ahead with the idea of dropping them off at an orphanage was the fact the girls might have a good reason for avoiding the orphanages. He couldn’t keep promising them those places were safe when they actually weren’t. "Vincent’s going to kill me," he muttered, allowing the girls to follow behind him.

Later in the day at Vincent’s home, Aurora waved goodbye to Cherry as she needed to go back to her shop after having it closed for most of the morning. They didn’t get the chance for Cherry to explain the type of clothes she brought over as they became distracted talking about relationships, friendships, and Cherry bringing Aurora up to date with the latest gossip.

Aurora enjoyed the chat she had with the women and now that Cherry was gone, she was left with Mari who had gone to start packing the dresses inside of her closets, and Jane had stepped outside to inspect the surroundings of the house. Aurora watched Jane walking around the home from one of the sitting room windows.

Now that everyone had disbanded, she felt kind of bored. She was tempted to go into the garden but the sky showed signs of there soon being rain and she did not want to ruin her clothes after Mari spent a good amount of time preparing her this morning.

Aurora placed her hands behind her back, stepping away from the window to inspect the sitting room and its contents better. It was weird how much time she spent in here but how little things she noticed. Like a small portrait of Vincent, Victor, and two people she assumed to be their parents.

There were also large shells like the ones she heard rumors of fishermen talking about. "Where did he get this from?" She wondered picking up the pretty white shell.

She gently placed the shell back down in an effort to not ruin it then picked up a ball made entirely of gold. "Why does anyone need a golden ball? Does Vincent really have this much money to waste?" She would never buy a ball made of gold but then again, you think differently when there was money to waste. "Oops," she gasped when almost dropping the ball on the table. She couldn’t afford to replace the ball or the table so she put it back.

"What else is there to do for fun other than exploring?" Aurora asked herself. She’ll have to find something to do in the coming days when she finished exploring the house aside from going out in the garden.

To be honest, she was doing the same thing she did in the Hamilton house. The only difference was she didn’t have someone she loved lying to her. Well, from what she saw from Vincent so far, she didn’t think he lied to her about anything yet. "Lillies are pretty but I rather see roses in the house," she said touching the petals of the white lilies someone placed in the house.

Aurora soon grew bored of the flowers and went to a door inside of the sitting room. She pushed it open to see where it led to. When she opened it, she found that the room behind the sitting room was a library. There were stairs leading down to shelves with countless books for her to read.

"This is where I will pass my time. I hope they have books on werewolves and vampires. Or the Hamiltons since I’m supposed to be looking at their history."

Aurora made it to the bottom of the stairs and went to the first bookshelf. Picking randomly, she chose the first book she saw and looked at the title. "The hunt," she read the title.

She opened the book flipping through its pages to see drawings of wolves chasing after animals. "Ah, it makes sense for a wolf to have this." She was about to close the book when she saw one of the drawings had wolves chasing someone who looked like a normal human. "They hunt humans?"

"My ancestors did," Vincent’s sudden arrival caused her to drop the book. "Are you scared now?" He asked, making his way down the stairs. He followed her scent into the library when he returned home.

"No," she shyly replied, picking up the book and putting it back in its place. She already heard the tales of werewolves, vampires, and other creatures hunting humans which was why the kings wanted all of them dead. It was just surprising to have one of Vincent’s books confirming it to be true. "Good thing I’m not human," she awkwardly chuckled.

"It wasn’t only humans. They captured other creatures they thought were a threat and hunted them down for sport to get rid of their enemies. It’s been a long time since we’ve done anything of the sort. We don’t run free as we used to in the old days but if we did, I wouldn’t allow anyone to hurt you. Did you have a good time with Cherry today?" He asked leaning back against a wall to watch her browse through the other books.

"How did you know? You weren’t home when she came."

"I know everything that goes on in my home Aurora and Cherry has a big mouth." He ran into her on his way home and she kept bragging of her time spent with Aurora.
