Chapter 83: Chapter 83 Heart’s Choices

Author

Alpha Zack immediately ordered his driver to turn the car around. His hands gripped the leather seat as guilt crashed over him like a tidal wave.

He never imagined Selina had known everything all along.

But what she didn’t understand was that he had cherished her deeply in his heart for years.

The memories flooded back as the car sped through the city streets.

When Alpha Zack was fifteen, he visited the Amber pack territory.

While passing by a storage shed, he heard something that sounded like a cat crying.

Curious, he climbed onto the roof where the sobbing became clearer.

Alpha Zack discovered a door that had been locked from the outside. When he opened the latch, he found a small girl inside, her face covered in dirt and tears, looking utterly pitiful.

The girl seemed only a few years old, barely reaching his knees.

Alpha Zack had always disliked crybabies, regardless of gender.

But something about this dirty little child with those big, watery eyes made him feel differently for the first time. Maybe crying girls weren’t so annoying after all.

He remembered this little girl from the Vance family had just lost her mother.

Feeling sorry for her, he patted her head. "Stop crying. Your face is all messy now."

"Would you like me to take you downstairs?"

"Is it because you lost your mother that they’re being mean to you?"

He knew Alpha Enzo had recently remarried. Such a small girl already had to deal with a stepmother.

"Don’t be afraid. From now on, I will make sure no one bullies you."

The second time he saw her was during one of the darkest periods of his life.

His beloved grandmother had passed away, leaving Alpha Zack unable to smile for a long time.

Then one spring day, while visiting Alpha Enzo with his father, he heard piano music coming from the Vance pack house.

That little girl he’d met before seemed to have grown taller.

Alpha Zack had learned piano as a child, and by chance, she was playing his grandmother’s favorite piece.

He leaned against the wall outside, listening for a long while. When he looked up, the girl had run off.

This little Vance girl had slowly made her way into his heart.

At sixteen, Alpha Zack went to the Alpha Academy for his training. He learned combat skills, pack leadership, and territorial management alongside other future Alphas. The academy was like a military boarding school, designed to shape young wolves into strong leaders.

When he came back, he learned Selina had gone to Luna Academy for her own education.

Selina was like a scar permanently etched in his heart.

But Elara was more like a warm blanket that comforts you when you wake in darkness. He enjoyed her scent, the feeling of peace he got just lying beside her, doing nothing but sleeping. It made him feel secure.

He’d always been willing to keep a place for Elara at his side, but it could never be more important than what Selina meant to him.

In the end, though, he had hurt the girl he cherished most.

--

The car screeched to a halt outside the hospital, jolting Zack back to the present.

Alpha Zack rushed into the hospital. His usually commanding presence was replaced by barely controlled panic. "Doctor, how is she?"

"She’s lucky. Just some minor cuts and bruises. She hit the back of her head, so we need to keep her here for a few days to make sure there’s no internal bleeding. Otherwise, she’s fine."

He walked into the room and saw her lying still on the bed, her face pale as a sheet. His heart ached terribly.

Perhaps his inability to choose had caused her pain. In that moment, Alpha Zack silently decided he wouldn’t think about anyone else anymore.

Selina was the only one who truly mattered to him.

He pulled a chair close to her bed and took her cold hand in both of his, willing his warmth into her skin.

An hour later, Selina slowly woke up.

She opened her eyes to see his handsome profile. Her voice came out as barely a whisper. "Zack?"

"I’m thirsty..." She tried to sit up but winced at the movement.

Selina felt like her throat was on fire.

Alpha Zack gently helped her sit up and picked up a water glass. His movements were careful, almost reverent, as if she might break. "Here, take small sips."

"The doctor says you’re okay. You just need to stay for a couple days to make sure there’s no bleeding in your brain. Then you can go home. So don’t worry." His voice was steady, but she could see the fear lingering in his eyes.

After finishing the water in small sips, Selina wet her lips. She studied his face, searching for the truth behind his concerned expression. "Zack, are you going to leave me?"
