Chapter 35: Chapter 35
Seton found it difficult to keep his mouth closed, especially when Henri got on the absolute monster of a horse, he still couldn’t wrap his head around how the slight Omega could get on the horse.
"The race is about to begin." Tarquin announced, making his way over to the start of the racecourse. freewebnσvel.cøm
Henri got off his horse once more to walk it over to the starting point, Seton recovering quickly enough to follow right after him.
He also noticeably stopped endlessly teasing Henri, a grim expression on his face. He had never seen a horse racer who specialized in large breeds. What made it even more unsettling was the size comparison.
The racecourse was circular so the crowd of people that came to watch was comfortably seated on the seats provided in the inner part of the course that was fenced off.
Rumbling conversations started up when the famed fresher that had challenged the state champion walked up. The pitch of the conversations increased as it was revealed that the fresher was none other than the Prince himself.
Before the race could even start, there was already pandemonium among the audience. There was just so much to unpack.
"How does he intend to get on that monster of a horse..."
"Is that Moonlight..."
"Can someone actually ride that giant..."
This would be the time for Audie to show his prowess and how much he knew about the prodigy that was the Prince but he had a tense expression on and remained silent.
He was well aware that Henri could easily get on the horse, that wasn’t his worry. He was immensely worried about the outcome of the race.
Seton was a professional who had been competitively participating in horse races even before attending the academy while Henri had never been in a proper race before, it was enough of a reason to be very worried.
So while the rest of the students were cheering wildly, and beside themselves with anticipation, a group of five Alphas sat stiffly.
"Why are you here?" Aude eyed up Alois.
The blue-green-haired Alpha just smiled harmlessly, flashing sharp teeth. "To support his Highness."
"You don’t seem very troubled." Louis noted, keeping his eyes fixed on Henri who was at the starting position, he didn’t want to doubt Henri but he couldn’t help but wonder just how Henri hoped to get on the horse.
When it finally happened, the entire racecourse was stunned silent for a few seconds. It was almost like Henri had wings with how fluidly he jumped on the large horse.
The aftermath of the few seconds was wild cheering, students rising from their seats. The opening competitions that was originally supposed to be the highlight was dwarfed by the preceding race.
With the racers in place, all that was left was the starting whistle to begin the race. Tarquin was the one to blow the whistle being the president of the club, he gave Henri a sympathetic look before the shrill sound of his whistle rippled through the racecourse.
Henri and Seton both shot off, Seton’s expression especially grim. Only Henri seemed to be having any fun, a bright smile on his face as he leaned forward on this horse.
The audience sat at the edge of their seats when the race began, swiveling in their seats to keep an eye on the horses.
After the first few meters, it became evident that Henri was already giving Seton a hard time right from the start of the race, his strain beginning to show on his face while Henri only got happier.
He had never had an opportunity to ride this fast before, there had been no reason to but now that he had tried it, he was hooked. The feeling of moving so fast was addictive, the wind rushing against him made the world fall away, it felt like he was leaping off the edge of a cliff.
By the halfway mark, Henri surpassed Seton and the distance between them only got larger the further the race went on.
Moonlight ran recklessly, matching the manner that Henri rode him. Both horse and horse rider were having the most fun as they reached breakneck speeds, Seton struggling to keep Henri in his sights.
Seton was by no means a terrible horse rider, he had also trained since he was young, and if it were anyone else but Prince Henri who found his escape in horse riding, it wouldn’t have even been a competition because Seton would leave them in his dust.
Because of this reason, it was increasingly difficult for Seton to accept his defeat. As someone who had always stood at the top, the thought of being defeated had never once crossed his mind.
As Henri neared the finish line, wild cheering filling the racecourse, Alois calmly got up, holding a flask as he walked down to the racecourse.
The others didn’t hesitate, filing right after him. The whistle blew as they neared the tracks, Dio wincing from the deafening cheers that followed Henri’s win.
Alois got to Henri at about the same time that he jumped down from his horse, handing the flask over to him. "Splendid work, your Highness." He bowed. frёewebηovel.cѳm
Henri beamed, his eyes lighting up like two moons. "Thank you..."
Before he could take a sip from the flask of cool water, Audie and Valentin jumped him, hugging him tightly.
Louis immediately dragged them off. "Hold them." He asked Dio who immediately clamped a hand around both their wrists, easily holding back their excitement.
Henri could finally get a drink, Tarquin coming over at the same time that Seton reached the finish line.
Tarquin had to jump out of the way to avoid getting mowed down by Seton who had a black expression on his face.
Seton’s followers immediately crowded around him when he came down from his horse but he just shoved them to the side and walked up to Henri, rage brewing in his eyes.
The Alphas around Henri immediately went on high alert, wary of the lit fuse that Seton currently was.
"Starting to think that you should have ridden my horse now?" Henri said with a smug smirk, giving in to the urge to rub it in. He was a little high off adrenaline or he would have handled this in a much calmer manner.
Veins popped out on the column of Seton’s neck from how much self-control he had to exercise not to launch himself at Henri. Even an oaf would understand when they were clearly outnumbered.
"Perhaps, I merely came to congratulate you though." He said in a faux-calm voice, nodding to Henri and turning around to leave.
In the excitement and chaos that happened after, Alois quietly slipped away, he had some things to attend to.
