Chapter 119: Chapter 104: Double Reward? Welcome to the Team
"That squad? They’re decent, I suppose. A rather ordinary squad, but the people are nice... Oh, and there’s a very interesting young man in it."
"Oh? Do tell."
Flora’s words immediately piqued Beixila’s curiosity. A young man described as "very interesting" by the Kingdom’s magical genius couldn’t possibly be simple.
"In a little over half a month, he went from scratch, comprehended Skills on his own, and became a Professional."
Indeed, the very first thing she said was astonishing enough.
Beixila thought back. "Duke Preston, the Extraordinary Level Warrior hailed as the Kingdom’s Sword... even he took nearly a month to advance, didn’t he?"
"Twenty-three days."
Flora remembered it clearly. "And Duke Preston had existing Skills to learn from, plus guidance from a master teacher."
"In that case, he truly is a rare genius. Given time, he might be able to match or even surpass Duke Preston."
"And that’s not all."
Flora shook her head. "At the same time, he also advanced into the Assassin Profession."
Beixila’s eyes widened. Clearly, this was starting to go beyond her understanding.
"He even came to me a few days ago to learn Magic, and he demonstrated a talent for it that far surpasses my own."
"Surpasses you...? Little Flora, are you sure?"
Beixila felt as if she were listening to a fairy tale.
Any one of those three accomplishments would be shocking enough, but to have all three...
"Are you sure you’re talking about a human?"
"I’ve had the same thought."
Flora shrugged. "I’ve even wondered if the guy is the illegitimate son of some god."
Beixila shook her head. "Whether gods even exist is still undecided... but setting aside such wild theories, if his talent is truly this great, it would be exceptionally rare even in the Empire... or on the entire Continent!"
"Even most of those other geniuses are from noble backgrounds, built up from birth with all sorts of resources."
Flora added, "I don’t think their actual talent can even compare to Lin Mo’s."
"It seems you have a very high opinion of him."
Beixila said with a smile, "I’ve never seen you praise someone so much."
"If Lady Ravel had seen for herself how fast he learns Magic, you would think the same thing... So, I want to ask you, Lady Ravel, to please ensure his safety. We absolutely cannot let a genius like him be ruined at the hands of Lawrence!"
Beixila nodded, clearly considering the matter seriously.
"Actually, there’s a reason I asked you about that Adventurer Squad."
Flora nodded in acknowledgment, waiting for her to continue.
"Feney, she..."
CREAK—
The door to the drawing room was pushed open, and a young, blonde-haired girl wearing a white cap and a Nun’s habit walked in.
"Mother, I want to be an Adventurer."
Flora looked at the young girl before her, a bit dazed for a moment. ’Feney’s all grown up...’
"Flora?!"
Feney’s expression immediately turned to one of pleasant surprise. She trotted over to her, fidgeting with the hem of her skirt. "What are you doing back here?"
"Just a small matter..."
Flora didn’t elaborate. She looked at Feney, her eyes filled with gratification. "It seems you got your wish and became a Priest, and a Nun of the Church, too."
She remembered when she left a few years ago, Feney was only twelve or thirteen, still just a kid. Back then, she would always be clutching the Church’s scriptures, poring over them bit by bit, trying to understand the obscure and difficult content.
But now, the Little Feney who used to always follow her around was almost as tall as she was.
"Thank you~"
Feney smiled gently, her graceful and composed demeanor an exact copy of her mother’s. "You’re still as young and beautiful as ever, Flora."
Flora laughed and shook her head. "I’m getting old. My teacher has been nagging me lately, telling me to find a reliable partner and settle down..."
"By the way, you just said you want to become an Adventurer?"
"Mhm."
Feney nodded. "The Holy Scripture clearly says, ’A hundred days of prayer yields but an inch of progress; a thousand miles of practice reveals true knowledge.’ But all the Priests nowadays just want to become Nuns and stay in the Church forever. It’s hard to improve that way."
Flora smoothed Feney’s round cap. "Because a stable and peaceful life is what most people strive for."
Many people don’t become Nuns because they admire the Church, nor do they become Priests because they want to heal the sick and suffering.
Most of the time, it’s just about making a living.
They don’t care about improving their abilities or what heights they might eventually reach. They just want a secure job that puts food on the table. Working for the Church happens to provide exactly that.
As for going out to train and improve oneself... everyone knows you can earn more money that way, but it also comes with great risk.
When you can live a stable life, how many people are willing to risk their lives to chase after an uncertain future?
Feney could have such aspirations because of her background. Only because she never had to worry about food or clothing did she have the time—and the right—to talk about ideals.
"Still, wanting to become an Adventurer isn’t a bad thing."
Although Beixila said this, her face was clearly tinged with worry. "But if you’re going to be an Adventurer, you can’t just go it alone... You’ll need to find at least a few reliable teammates. Feney, have you thought about that?"
"I... I’ll go find some."
Feney said this, but the expression on her face was clearly one of bewilderment.
As the City Lord’s daughter, she’d had few opportunities to interact with Adventurers. She didn’t know anyone, so she would just have to brace herself and try to recruit them.
