Chapter 28: Sovereign Shell
Before Ren could even process what had just happened, the system chimed.
[Fusion has begun]
[Do not interfere with the process]
He felt it immediately, a warm, strange sensation moving through him from the point where the staff had dissolved into his mouth, spreading outward through his body like something rearranging itself at a level he couldn’t see or control. It wasn’t painful exactly, more like pressure building in places he hadn’t known existed, deep and structural.
He turned and made his way back into the depth of the cave, moving carefully, his earlier wounds still making themselves known with every step. Whatever the fusion was doing to him, his body still needed rest while it happened. He lowered himself into the familiar corner where he’d undergone his evolution, settled his weight against the stone, and closed his eyes.
He expected to be there for hours.
[Fusion Complete]
[Special Unique Grade Divine Armament Created]
Ren’s eyes snapped open.
He scrambled to his feet faster than his injuries appreciated, the protest from his body entirely ignored.
"Wait, it’s done?" he asked, already pulling up the system screen. "Already?"
He searched through the notifications, moving fast, looking for whatever the system had just created.
[New Armament: Divine Human Armament — Sovereign Shell]
[Grade: Unique]
[Origin: Divine Armament fused with human biological properties]
He stared at the name for a moment.
"What the hell is a Sovereign Shell?" he muttered, already scrolling for the description.
[Sovereign Shell: A humanoid body formed from the fusion of a divine armament and human material. Host may assume this form at will. The form harnesses the full power of the consumed divine armament and channels it through a humanoid vessel. Extremely high combat output. Certain abilities exclusive to this form only.]
Ren read it twice.
Then he read it a third time.
"A humanoid body," he said slowly. "It made me a humanoid body." He sat with that for a second, genuinely trying to find the logic in it. "How does fusing a staff with a dead human produce a human form? That doesn’t make any sense whatsoever."
The system offered no explanation.
He decided to stop trying to understand it and just see it.
He focused on the armament the way the system seemed to expect him to, the same instinctive reach he used for his other skills, and felt something respond immediately, a pull, a shift, and then his body was changing.
He looked down at himself as it happened.
His frame was compressing and reshaping, scales pulling back in most places, his overall form becoming something upright and bipedal, distinctly human in its proportions. But not entirely. The horns remained, jutting from his skull but different now, their surface carrying a faint metallic sheen like they’d been dipped in armor plating. His forearms had not smoothed out into human skin but into something that looked like articulated gauntlets, dragon-scaled and clawed but structured like armor rather than natural growth, each piece fitting against the next with the precision of something crafted rather than grown.
He looked at his feet.
Same principle, his lower legs and feet covered in overlapping scale-armor that curved and fitted like boots made from something that had decided to be both organic and manufactured simultaneously.
He reached back and felt his wings still present, folded against his back, their surface carrying the same metallic quality as his horns, catching the dim cave light differently than they used to.
He stood there in the quiet of the cave and looked at his own hands, turning them over slowly, the gauntlet claws flexing with complete responsiveness, the movement entirely natural.
He pressed one hand against the cave wall, then pressed harder.
The stone cracked.
"Okay," he said quietly.
He turned his attention back to the system, thinking the obvious next question before he’d even finished forming it.
"Is this stronger than my dragon form?" he asked.
[No. No form surpasses the host’s original dragon body in raw output.]
[However, Sovereign Shell provides combat capabilities unavailable in dragon form, and operates at near-equivalent strength. Certain exclusive abilities are only accessible while this form is active.]
"Near-equivalent," he repeated. "And exclusive abilities."
He pulled up the ability list before the system finished displaying it, too eager to wait.
[Sovereign Shell Exclusive Abilities:]
[Lightning Blast: Generate and release a condensed, controlled discharge of lightning with high precision and devastating force. Range and power scalable based on intent.]
He read it and felt his eyes go slightly wide.
That was the headmaster’s attack. The same crackling column that had grazed him during the fight, the one that had burned across his front and left him smoking.
It was his now.
[Gravity Manipulation: Exert complete control over gravitational force within a defined radius. Increase gravity to crush and suppress, reduce it to elevate and accelerate. Effect scales with the host’s output.]
Ren stared at that one for a long, quiet moment.
The dome the headmaster had thrown up to block his Ember Breath. The gravity field that had pinned him into a crater and made his bones pop just trying to stand. The absolute control the old man had exerted over the air and ground around them, treating gravity like a second sword.
All of it, sitting right here in his ability list now.
He scrolled further, seeing that more abilities were still listed below, still waiting to be read, and felt something settle in his chest that was equal parts satisfaction and the particular hunger of someone who had just realized they were holding something far more significant than they’d expected.
He looked at his gauntleted hands again.
The headmaster had used that staff for what looked like a lifetime. Had honed those spells, built them into something lethal through years of mastery.
Ren had owned it in a few minutes.
"Yeah," he said softly, a slow smile forming. "This was worth it."
While he was busy thinking about the fact that he now had all those spells in this body, he realized that he was no longer naked. He looked down and what he saw scared him so much he changed back into his dragon form.
"I might need clothes or something."
