Chapter 25: Ch 25: Luck Favours The Brave

Raidan wasn’t that of a soft person, still the gruesome scene of that little boy’s skull split open shocked him.

He wanted to vomit right there and then.

The memory of the hardworking little boy flashed before his eyes again and again, overlapping with this gruesome scene.

Just what could happen to make someone kill the little boy so cruelly?

And what about his father, who was working as a chef?

The answer was revealed upon seeing a second body of a large man being dragged in, in the same manner as the boy.

But the man’s body was in far worse condition.

Countless holes were made all around his body, from which red blood poured out uncontrollably.

The slaughter happened just recently.

But why?

Raidan tried to peek through the crimson-clothed men, but while doing so his legs bumped into a clay pot, making a soft grinding noise.

The red-clothed men became alert immediately. They held their swords and spears tight in their grasp, while their eyes searched for the cause of the noise.

"What was that noise?" one man asked.

"Spread around, bastards! We don’t want to leave any evidence behind," barked the man with a large mustache on his face, most likely the leader of the killers.

Tut, tut, tut...

Everyone started looking around, making Raidan’s heart nearly leap out from his chest.

He didn’t know if he could defeat them if he got caught.

Although, in general, NPCs have higher levels than newbie players.

Raidan was currently hidden behind a wooden partition, and a killer was already heading in his direction.

The killer’s eyes were locked ahead, sharp as a hawk’s. A single movement could earn a lethal strike from his sword.

Step. Step. Step.

Just a few more steps, and Raidan was about to get caught.

But then—

"Meow!"

Whether by coincidence or luck, a stray cat jumped in through the window.

Seeing the cat softly purring on the ground, the approaching killer mistook it for the source of the recent noise.

"Everything is clear, boss. It’s just a fucking cat!" he shouted, letting everyone know they could stop wasting their time.

It unknowingly shielded Raidan from becoming a target.

As everyone started returning to their positions, he exhaled a breath of relief. He was safe, all thanks to the timely help of the cat. However, the next thing he heard from their leader made his blood freeze.

"A fucking cat? Keke, grab it, Twister. We are going to need to toast it tonight with the beer," the boss ordered, cackling maliciously.

The killer nodded, a cruel smile on his face. "Alright, boss."

After that, the unthinkable happened.

There was simply no delay. With terrifying speed and a swift strike, the cat was slain through the head, blood splashing against the wooden floor.

The body was then stuffed inside a cloth bag.

Everything happened so fast that Raidan couldn’t even react.

But to think someone could kill an innocent cat so causally. He had never imagined someone could manage to pull this off so casually.

Although, it was not surprising. After all, killings always happened on Earth as well.

If a human can kill another human, why can’t they kill a cat?

Raidan himself had killed a human recently.

Still, the casualness of their cruelty ignited a cold fury in Raidan’s chest.

He clamped his hand over his mouth, forcing his breathing to remain slow and steady.

The killers gathered in the center of the room, stepping over the corpses without a second glance.

"Bastards! Did you find the scroll yet?" the mustache-faced boss demanded.

Wiping his bloodied blade on a nearby tablecloth, Twister replied:

"Not yet, boss. We tore the kitchen apart. If the old man hid it, he did a damn good job. He took the secret to his grave."

The boss spat,

"Keep looking! The young master wants that scroll before the city guards catch wind of this. If we return empty-handed, our heads will be the next ones rolling on the floor!"

The men immediately scrambled like frightened rabits. They overturned tables, smashed cabinets, and pilled up the floorboards with the pommels of their swords.

Raidan quietly watched through a narrow crack in the wooden partition.

"A scroll? What scroll they are talking about? But if they are that desperate, it had to be something invaluable."

Carefully, so as not to make a single sound, he focused on the leader and mentally activated System Appraisal.

[Name: Bumran ’The Butcher’]

[Level: 18]

[Affiliation: Crimson Graveyard]

Raidan’s frowned after seeing this.

Level 18.

That was significantly higher than his own.

The other three goons were likely around Level 12 to 15. If he fought them head-on in this confined space, his chances of survival were very slim.

Smash!

"Fuck! Nothing over here!" one of the goon shouted, breaking a smal clay pot.

"Then check behind the partitions! Tear the whole damn inn down if you have to!" Bumran barked, his saliva flying everywhere

Raidan knew his time was nearly up. If he stayed hidden, they were going to find him eventually.

He needed to do something, and as soon as possible.

Just then—
