Chapter 1: Ch 1: A Convenient Fool

Outside the Civil Court of Detroit, a fat lawyer and a young man were seen talking under the shade of a tree.

"Congratulations, Raidan, my boy! Your divorce was a success!"

The lawyer slapped the young man’s shoulder heartily.

The young man, Raidan Gray, however, didn’t quite share such a jovial mood.

"Is it really something to celebrate, Uncle? Is watching the last piece of your life fall apart really something to cheer for?"

"Of course it is, my boy. That girl only married you to claim her inheritance rights, aren’t I right?"

"That’s true. But knowing the truth doesn’t make the bleeding stop."

"Haha, that’s good then. It calls for a celebration."

Just as the lawyer was about to drag Raidan away to make him financially bleed for another round, a female figure, accompanied by the fresh scent of blooming roses, blocked his path.

She had pale porcelain skin, vampire-like ruby eyes, and long dark hair that reached past her shoulders in cascading waves.

The flower-patterned black dress she wore only highlighted her beauty.

Seeing her charming face from up so close, Raidan’s heartbeat sped up unknowingly.

She was beautiful, simply too beautiful. Every man in the vicinity was unconsciously looking at her.

"Rai... please, don’t just walk away. I need to tell you something. Something incredibly important. Please, just listen to me."

Hearing her call him by the same old nickname brought a wave of bittersweet memories.

They had first met in college.

She was the brightest star, a top athlete, a genius in her studies, and extraordinary in leadership. While he... he was just a speck of dust by the roadside.

He was a quiet background character in her story. Until... freēwebnovel.com

One day, she called him in private, under the familiar silent corridors.

She said something that shattered his world.

She said she wanted to marry him.

He was struck by lightning. They hadn’t even had that many conversations, except for a few awkward hellos to initiate one.

So, the proposal of marriage felt simply unbelievable.

He agreed almost instantly. Not because he was desperate, but because he never wanted that dream to end.

But that was not a dream. They were indeed married.

He only found that out when they were moving into the nuptial chamber to consummate the marriage.

She revealed the brutal reality, saying, "I only married you for the inheritance rights to my grandfather’s company."

He was no chosen one. He was simply a more convenient option out of many choices.

He was quiet and easy to take advantage of.

A convenient fool.

The realization had hurt him deep.

"You never truly looked at me, did you, Emma Ross? You never saw the person who fell asleep praying for your happiness. To you, I was just a blank canvas, a convenient tool to lock away your grandfather’s wealth. I spent every single day of our marriage trying to be enough for you, hoping that maybe, just maybe, my love could reach past your ambition. But you just took, and took, until there was nothing left of me. Your face doesn’t just hurt to look at anymore... it sickens me, because it reminds me of how completely I threw myself away for someone who only saw me as a business transaction."

She was stunned. He was always so quiet and docile, so how could he suddenly become so fierce.

"I know I ruined everything, Rai. I know I broke your trust. But please... just give me one moment to explain. It wasn’t all a lie."

She tried to touch his shirt, but he coldly shoved her hand aside.

Slap!

"Don’t touch me. You don’t get to play the regretful wife now, Miss Ross. You won. You got your inheritance, you got your company. Walk away with your prize and leave me with what little dignity I have left. Uncle, let’s go."

His uncle, who had shrunk his shoulders due to Emma’s sudden appearance, quickly stepped forward and started leaving beside his nephew.

Emma stood there, biting her red lip until it bled.

Just then—

"Had enough? Let’s leave now!"

The cold voice followed out of nowhere, making Emma shiver.

She nodded frantically to the empty air and then disappeared like a black and red mist.

--

Far away, the uncle and nephew stopped by a roadside cafe.

His uncle personally ordered two cups of coffee to cheer him up.

"Come on, Raidan. Forget her already. There will be hundreds of girls like her once you become rich!"

Raidan just stared at the busy road while his cup of coffee turned cold.

Just then, he noticed something odd.

People were pointing at the Sky.

He also turned his head to look through the glass window, but...

Boom!

The sudden explosion was like a meteor striking the Earth. It shook the nearby buildings along with the cafe where they sat.

Everyone went into panic mode at once! Some ran outside to investigate.

"Oh God! What just happened?"

"Damn! Something just crashed down from the sky and crushed a van full of school kids."

"That’s horrible! But what is it, actually?"

"Maybe a wing of a plane?"

"Stop joking, you bastard! Some innocent kids just died there!"

Raidan, out of curiosity, followed the others outside.

"Don’t go, Raidan! They could be terrorists!" his uncle yelled from under the table.

Raidan still went ahead, pushing right through the dense crowd forming in the middle of the road.

As the dust cleared, there was nothing left of the school van. Raidan’s blood froze, imagining the swift, painless deaths those children must have suffered.

However, something else was even more chilling.

The reason for such a horrific crash was a single, glowing gold crystal magically hovering in the air.

"Fuck! What is that thing? Some kind of new bomb?"

"Sir, we shouldn’t jump to conclusions so soon. It could be a rare metal from space!"

Hearing the police officer’s words, some people’s eyes gleamed with greed.

Three people immediately rushed forward to grab it before anyone else could.

However, the moment they touched the gold crystal, they instantly turned to ash. They didn’t even have time to scream.

"This... this..."

The cop and the crowd were completely horrified to the core.

"Please stay away from it, ladies and gentlemen! I will call emergency services immediately!"

Raidan’s reaction, however, was vastly different. His vision blurred to the point where he could only see that crystal. It felt like something special, something meant only for him.

His legs started guiding him forward on their own.

Boom!

Just then, another explosion echoed, barely a hundred meters away from the first one. To their surprise, there was another crystal, but this one was red in color.

Then, another. Boom!

A blue one.

Boom!

Green.

Ka-boom!

White.

The explosions slowly spread throughout the entire city, creating the doomsday of the apocalypse.

Wherever those colorful crystals fell, they brought wave after wave of destruction and heart-wrenching cries. People looked toward the sky in terror, wondering when it would be their turn to die.

At that exact moment, a booming voice echoed across the entire globe.

Raidan, meanwhile, finally touched the golden crystal.

Hum!

It hummed in response, as if it had been waiting for him all along. It pierced deep into his heart, yet he felt no pain. There was only a slight discomfort that snapped Raidan back to reality.

"Huh? What just happened to me?"

Dong!
