Chapter 95: Chapter 95: I Want to Divorce You
###Chapter 95: I Want to Divorce You
Zachary Hawthorne had always thought he treated Nina Wainwright well. At the very least, he had never been stingy when it came to her personal spending.
’But now, listening to Catherine Grant, it sounds like the problem between them is that I didn’t give her enough money to spend?’
Zachary Hawthorne ignored her. He shot her a cold glance before turning his gaze back to the light above the operating room door.
When he didn’t reply, Catherine Grant was so furious that her knuckles cracked as she clenched her fists.
Two hours later, Nina Wainwright was wheeled out of the operating room. They all knew the baby was gone.
"Doctor, how is she?" Catherine Grant rushed forward, her eyes red with worry.
Adrian Pemberton stood off to the side. He didn’t approach, but watched the pale-faced Nina Wainwright on the gurney with restraint.
"There’s nothing to worry about. She just needs to rest and take care of herself to recover." With that, the doctor moved around them to leave.
Zachary Hawthorne reached out and grabbed the doctor. "She was pregnant, and she miscarried? What caused it?"
"Someone gave her an abortion pill. And it was done after she’d been drugged with an anesthetic." After speaking, the doctor glanced at him involuntarily.
Zachary Hawthorne let go of the doctor, his expression turning ice-cold as he stared at the unconscious Nina Wainwright on the bed.
Once Nina Wainwright was settled in a private room, Catherine Grant took a warm washcloth and began wiping the blood from her hands.
Zachary Hawthorne came in after finishing a phone call. Seeing Catherine Grant still tending to Nina Wainwright, he said in a low voice, "I’ve arranged for a nurse. You can go handle your own affairs."
"What affairs could I possibly have?!" Catherine Grant snapped, washcloth in hand.
Zachary Hawthorne stared at her, his expression cold and his eyes unreadable. "She is my wife. It’s not your place to be watching over her."
Catherine Grant’s face flushed with anger. She glared daggers at Zachary Hawthorne for a long moment before nodding. "So you cast people aside once they’ve served their purpose, is that it?! Yes, she’s your wife, but she’s also my friend! Why can’t I stay here with her?! Besides, you shouldn’t be sitting in this room—you should be finding out who did this to her!"
"That’s my business," Zachary Hawthorne said coldly.
Before Catherine Grant could say anything else, the door opened. Silas Sinclair stood in the doorway, his expression grim. "Miss Grant, please leave."
Zachary Hawthorne sat beside the bed, ignoring Catherine Grant’s glare.
After standing her ground for another moment, Catherine Grant silently exhaled, tossed the washcloth into the basin, and turned to leave without another word.
As Catherine Grant left the hospital, she saw Adrian Pemberton waiting for her downstairs. She immediately ran over to him. "I didn’t expect you to come," she said, her voice full of concern.
"Why wouldn’t I?" Adrian Pemberton said softly. "Let’s find somewhere to talk."
Catherine Grant nodded, and they left the hospital together.
The two of them left the hospital, and Catherine Grant drove him to a hotel.
"This definitely has something to do with Luna Sterling," Catherine Grant said to Adrian Pemberton, pouring out her frustrations the moment she sat down. "During Zachary and Nina’s third wedding anniversary, she lied to Nina. Zachary had bought a thirty-million-dollar ring for Luna, but Luna told Nina it was for her. Then she tricked Nina into going to some party celebrating the anniversary of when she and Zachary met, all because she wanted to make a fool out of Nina."
Adrian Pemberton’s voice was grim. "Did you know Ms. Cole was beaten up?"
Catherine Grant froze. "I haven’t visited her recently."
"They tried to force Ms. Cole to tell them if Nina was pregnant. She refused, so they beat her. The shop’s security cameras were uploading to the cloud in real-time. They thought they were in the clear after destroying the local surveillance system," Adrian Pemberton said, his face grim. "First they came after me, and now Ms. Cole. Their objective is to get rid of Nina’s baby."
"Do you have the footage?" Catherine Grant asked, her voice trembling with excitement.
"I do," Adrian Pemberton said. "But we haven’t identified who those men work for. Even if we do, I don’t think it will be any use. Zachary Hawthorne will just make excuses for Luna Sterling. Besides, Luna has been putting on an act for so long, she’d never let herself get caught so easily."
A grave expression settled over Catherine Grant’s face.
"The only thing we can do now is help her divorce Zachary Hawthorne," Adrian Pemberton continued. "She lost the baby, and we can’t prove Luna Sterling was involved. But... we do have concrete evidence that Caleb Ford and his associates were behind the scam that tricked Raymond Wainwright into taking out a thirty-million-dollar loan." ƒrēewebnovel.com
"That should be enough," Catherine Grant said in a low voice. "If Zachary tries to defend Luna Sterling, Nina will definitely ask for a divorce."
After talking for a while, Adrian Pemberton got ready to leave.
He had just stood up when Catherine Grant couldn’t stop herself from asking, "How’s your hand? Nina has been blaming herself for what happened."
"It’s mostly fine now," Adrian Pemberton replied calmly. "The worst-case scenario is that I can no longer work as a doctor."
Catherine Grant’s expression was full of regret. "You make it sound so simple, but Nina can’t get over her guilt. Once she’s divorced, we’ll help you find a hospital position."
At her words, Adrian Pemberton couldn’t help but chuckle. "Alright. Thank you."
"We should be thanking you. You were recovering at home, and I dragged you out here with a single phone call," Catherine Grant said, looking apologetic.
"I came for Nina," Adrian Pemberton said gently. "With something like this happening to her, of course I had to come and be there for her."
’Adrian Pemberton was always the best match for Nina,’ Catherine Grant thought.
’What a pity.’
’But Nina loved Zachary Hawthorne. No matter how terrible he was, the power of a youthful romance—of a first love, that idealized figure from her past—was unlike anything else.’
「Meanwhile.」
Nina Wainwright didn’t wake up until the afternoon. The moment she opened her eyes, she remembered that the child she had protected for so long was gone.
"You were pregnant. Why didn’t you tell me?" Zachary Hawthorne’s voice came from beside her.
Nina Wainwright didn’t answer him. She just stared blankly at the ceiling.
"Nina, we can have another child," Zachary Hawthorne said, trying to comfort her, though his voice was stiff.
At his words, Nina Wainwright finally turned her gaze to him. "There won’t be another. I want a divorce."
Zachary Hawthorne frowned, his face displeased. "Why? Because your father took out a thirty-million-dollar loan and I didn’t pay it back for you?"
"Think whatever you want. I want a divorce!" Nina Wainwright cried, her eyes bloodshot.
’If he hadn’t been entangled with Luna Sterling, the Sterling Family would never have laid such an elaborate trap to kill her child.’
’It was all Zachary Hawthorne’s disloyalty that had led her to this, that had cost her the baby... The hatred in Nina Wainwright’s heart was a raging fire, burning her sanity to ash.’
"I’m not agreeing to a divorce," Zachary Hawthorne said coldly. "If anyone’s going to initiate a divorce, it will be me."
"On what grounds?!" Nina Wainwright glared at him, her eyes filled with hatred. "Zachary Hawthorne, if you hadn’t been so entangled with Luna Sterling—if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have lost my baby! You were never faithful to our relationship. If you loved someone else, why didn’t you just say so?! Why did you make me waste three years of my life? Why?!"
"I wasn’t faithful to our relationship? I’ve already explained that there’s nothing going on between me and Luna Sterling," Zachary Hawthorne said, frowning.
