Chapter 44: Chapter 44: I Know Very Well What Kind of Person She Is
### Chapter 44: I Know Exactly What Kind of Person She Is
"Nina... I don’t care at all about what they said! I know you only married him because you like him." Adrian Pemberton pulled her by the wrist. "There’s nothing wrong with liking someone. At the time, he was single and you were single. He didn’t have a girlfriend, so you weren’t the other woman."
Hearing this, Nina Wainwright turned her head to look at him. "But we don’t know what’s really going on between him and Luna Sterling. How can you be so sure I didn’t steal someone else’s boyfriend?"
"That’s just your guess, too. You don’t have to feel bad because of what they said. During your marriage, have you ever done anything to wrong him? He’s the one who wronged you. You’re not the one at fault," Adrian Pemberton said, his tone decisive.
Nina Wainwright looked at him, the corners of her lips curling up into a smile. "I don’t think I’m at fault either. Thank you."
"Have you had breakfast? I had surgery this morning and just finished up. Want to get some together?" Adrian Pemberton asked with a smile.
Nina Wainwright immediately nodded. "Okay, I’m starving."
"I’ll take you to the hospital cafeteria. I have a meal card," Adrian Pemberton said, then turned and walked toward the stairs.
Nina Wainwright quickly followed him. "I’ll head back after breakfast. Luna Sterling said she’s staying at the hospital to take care of him, which is great. I’m tired anyway."
"I’ll drive you back after we eat," Adrian Pemberton said gently.
"You’re so busy at the hospital, you don’t have to worry about me," Nina Wainwright immediately refused. "I can just take a car."
Adrian Pemberton stood at the bottom of the stairs and turned to look at her. "Nina, are you going back to the house you share with Zachary Hawthorne?"
"Yeah," Nina Wainwright nodded. "He solved my parents’ debt. I have to fulfill my promise."
’The contract is signed. Where else could she go? Maybe she could only escape this prison when he finally gets tired of her.’
Adrian Pemberton let out a soft sigh and said no more.
After breakfast, Nina Wainwright called a taxi, planning to go home, take a shower, and get a good sleep.
’Lately, she always felt so exhausted, and she was sleeping more and more... She didn’t know if it was because she was too depressed that she felt this way.’
Not long after getting in the car, she began to feel drowsy.
The ringing of her phone woke her. She fumbled for it in her pocket and saw it was Zachary Hawthorne calling. Annoyed, she still pressed the answer key. "What do you want?"
"Where are you? What took you so long to eat breakfast?" Zachary Hawthorne asked, his tone laced with displeasure.
"I took care of you all night, am I not allowed to go home and get some sleep?!" Nina Wainwright retorted, suppressing her anger.
"Is there nowhere for you to sleep at the hospital? Did you run home because you made a mistake and you’re afraid I’ll hold you accountable?" Zachary Hawthorne said coldly.
Nina Wainwright’s lips tightened. A flood of grievances surged within her, but she managed to control her emotions. Taking a deep breath, she said, "So you still think it was my fault."
"Nina, I know exactly what kind of person Luna is. She only said those things to cover for you." Zachary Hawthorne’s tone softened slightly. "She was injured too. You can’t just go home without doing anything."
"Are you saying you want me to personally take care of her?" Nina Wainwright asked in disbelief.
"That’s not what I mean. It’s just that Luna feels bad about it, so you should come back," Zachary Hawthorne said.
Nina Wainwright was so angry she laughed.
’Feels bad about it?’
’Isn’t this just her pretending to be guilty to force me to wait on her?’
"Zachary Hawthorne, taking care of you is one thing, but now you want me to take care of your precious old flame? Are you even human?" Nina Wainwright’s voice trembled. She tried to rein in her emotions and not care, but Zachary Hawthorne’s actions were grinding her dignity into the dust.
"How am I not human? Luna wants to be friends with you, and she’s very sorry about what happened today. I’m giving you both a chance to get to know each other—" frёewebηovel.cѳm
"Do I want this chance?! I wasn’t the one at fault today in the first place! If she feels sorry, that’s her business! What right do you have to force me into this?!" Nina Wainwright was so furious her breathing hitched.
’His friends humiliated her and looked down on her, and it turned out it was all because of him... Because he didn’t treat her like a person, they felt free to bully her too.’
"Nina, you’re being too sensitive," Zachary Hawthorne said with a helpless sigh.
"Right, I’m sensitive, I’m hysterical! If you don’t like it, you can just divorce me! You’re the one who doesn’t want a divorce, did I force you to stay with me—"
"Enough!" Zachary Hawthorne cut her off impatiently. "It was such a small thing, but you just had to blow it out of proportion!"
With that, he hung up the phone.
Nina Wainwright was so angry she felt dizzy, and a sudden throbbing pain started in her lower abdomen.
She didn’t know if it was from when her back was hit. Frowning, she braced herself against the front seat and took shallow breaths.
The driver in the front had been watching for a while and finally couldn’t help but ask, "Why don’t I take you back to the hospital?"
"No, thanks... I’m fine." Nina Wainwright had no desire to go to the hospital. The thought of seeing Zachary Hawthorne’s face, of seeing how gently he always treated Luna Sterling, made her chest tighten with panic.
’More than once now, she’d regretted it. Why had she married a man who didn’t love her back, all for that tiny bit of affection she’d felt?’
’Especially when he already had his precious old flame.’
「Back at Avelon Residence.」
Nina Wainwright had just stepped into the living room when she nearly collapsed. Luckily, a maid was nearby to catch her.
Her stomach was hurting badly. Panting lightly, Nina Wainwright said to the maid, "Just help me to my room to rest..."
The maid helped her upstairs.
Lying on the bed, she clutched her throbbing stomach, taking ragged breaths.
Seeing how pale she was, the maid went downstairs anyway and called Silas Sinclair.
Once the call connected, the maid said softly, "When Madam came back, her face was completely drained of color, and she was clutching her stomach. Should I call the family doctor?"
"You have to ask me about something like this? If you think something’s wrong, call him immediately!" Silas Sinclair said before hanging up.
The maid pouted. The master of the house seemed to dote on his wife, but he was rarely home. She dialed the family doctor’s number, explained Nina Wainwright’s situation once the call went through, and then hung up. After that, she went to the kitchen to bring Nina a bowl of restorative soup.
Nina Wainwright was half-asleep.
The maid came to the bedside and called out softly, "Madam, I’ve called a doctor for you. Have something warm to drink first. Maybe it’ll help you feel a little better."
Nina Wainwright struggled to open her eyes. She glanced at the maid and said softly, "Thank you, but when the doctor comes, tell him not to bother. I’m just exhausted from not sleeping all night. I’m fine."
"But you were clutching your stomach when you came in. Are you sure your stomach doesn’t hurt?" the maid asked worriedly.
Nina Wainwright let out a breath. "I got into a bit of a conflict with someone today. It’s just from being too angry. It’s nothing, I’ll be fine after some rest."
"Alright then. Please remember to drink this, Madam. I’ll send the doctor away," the maid said, then tucked the covers around her.
Nina Wainwright couldn’t even keep her eyes open. Sinking deep into the bed, she fell into a heavy sleep again moments later.*****
