Chapter 416: Chapter 416: This Was Her Dream

Edie spoke to Andy in a calm, cold tone of firm determination. "You are a senior here at the college? Am I right?" Andy nodded her head. "You should have known there would be a price to pay for spreading gossip and trying to ruin someone’s reputation." Edie takes Stuart’s hand in hers. "This is my husband, and yes, he paid for me to get in...." she hesitates for a moment. "Maybe I’m not qualified to be in the school, but if you continue to humiliate me, I will see that you never step foot in this school again."

Andy looked at Edie with tears rolling down her cheeks. The last thing she wanted was to be kicked out of school. This was her dream. "I’m sorry," she just broke down and sobbed her heart out.

"I understand why you may have thought those awful things about me, but I tried to explain, and you wouldn’t listen to me. I honestly don’t know how you can live with yourself." Edie couldn’t quite keep her smug satisfaction out of her voice.

Then Edie opened her hand, and Andy’s ring appeared. "I thought it was gone forever," she cried. She grabbed it and held it tightly against her chest.

Edie stood up and scanned the room, looking at the other women. "I will sue every single one of you if you continue to talk behind my back. I will give you one more chance. I warn you, and I don’t want you even to mention my name." She turned and looked at Stuart. "As for this man. Of course, I rely on him." Then she hugged him. "He’s my husband, and what I say or do is none of your business. Do you understand?"

Silence fell in the room, and everyone nodded their heads in agreement. Hearing how she spoke about him, Stuart felt so proud. His heart swelled with emotion. Edie looked up at him and smiled. "Honey, I’m hungry. Let’s go get something to eat."

Stuart wrapped his arm around Edie’s waist and kissed her on the forehead. Then he whispered in her ear, "I love you."

Cecil watched as they walked towards the door. "Don’t forget about me," he said as he ran with a piece of chocolate in his hand.

Ivan put his hand out and stopped him abruptly. "They’re going alone this time." Then he picked Cecil up. "They’re adults, and you’re coming home with me," he said firmly.

Cecil didn’t understand. He reached out for Edie and screamed, "Don’t leave me." But it too late, they was already gone.

Ivan shook his head and laughed at the women in the room. "Such an imagination you have."

Right at that moment, Stuart’s lawyer arrived and handed Andy a piece of paper. "Are you Andy?" he asked.

Andy nodded her head. "Yes....." she answered, with a little hesitation in her voice.

"My name is Edward Clark. I’m Mr. Yates’s lawyer." He reached over to shake Andy’s hand. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Lopez."

Andy stood there, speechless for a moment. "How do you know my name? Do you know my husband?"

"I’m Mr. Yates’ lawyer, how do you think I found out?" Edward replied in a somewhat sarcastic tone.

It was obvious there was an investigation. He knew her name, which meant he knew her husband. "Whose lawyer.....are.....you?" she asked, her voice trembling in fear. ’Please don’t let it be him.’ She thought, feeling rather foolish and hoping it was a mistake.

"Mr. Yates," Edward replied with a smile.

"Mr. Yates? Do you mean Stuart Yates?" Andy asked. "Edie’s married to Stuart?" she began to panic and started shaking uncontrollably.

Stuart stopped and looked Edie in the eyes. There was a touch of sadness around them. "How is your back? Are you in a lot of pain?" He shook his head and chuckled, "At times, I can be so stupid. Of course, you are!"

Edie kissed him on the cheek. "I’m not in as much pain as I was. I went to the hospital, and the nurse put some ointment on it. It seems to help. Stop worrying about me. I’ll be fine," she said, trying to reassure him. She paused for a brief second, then continued. "How did you find out what happened at the school? Did you have me followed?" she asked questionably.

Stuart rubbed his chin and turned his head a little. "No. It was from Ivan. He was worried about you."

Edie knew right away he was lying by the expression on his face. "Oh!" she said.

When Stuart opened the door for her, there was a pillow on the seat. "Did you do this?" A smile touched her lips, and she quietly asked, "You know why they were gossiping about me. Don’t you?" Edie’s eyebrows lifted, and she gave him a sly smile.

"Yes, I do," Stuart replied. He took a deep breath and continued. "It’s because of a ring."

Then Edie reached in her purse and took out a ring box. "I bought these a few weeks ago. Mr. Bates helped me pick them out. I’ve been waiting for the right time to give it to you, but there’s been so much going on," she explained. Then she takes Stuart’s hand and puts in hers. "Will you marry me?" she asked.

Stuart’s face suddenly became pale, and there was a weird expression on his face. One Edie had never seen before. "No!" he said. Then he took the box and threw them in the back seat.

Edie’s heart sank. ’Does he not want to make an announcement to the world about our marriage? Why? Maybe he just doesn’t like wearing rings.’ These thoughts kept going around and around in her head. The more she tried to stop them, the more they came back. The smile disappeared and was replaced by a palpable sadness. She tried to calm herself by taking a deep breath. Her heart is beating fast, and she could barely think.

She finally managed to calm herself down enough to speak. "You don’t like wearing rings, do you? It’s okay! I can do without one." She said, smiling wryly. Stuart had given her so much. She told herself it didn’t matter. She was desperately trying to persuade herself that a ring wasn’t important. "You love me, and that’s all that matters," she said with a sad tone in her voice.

Stuart gently pulled her towards him and whispered in her ear, "I’m the one who’s supposed to do it. You can’t take that away from me,"

Edie had a puzzled expression on her face. "What did you just say?" she asked, thinking she didn’t hear him right. "I stole your job? I never thought you would ever propose to me," she said, sounding confused.

Stuart reached into his jacket pocket, pulled a box out, and opened it. He looked deep into Edie’s eyes. "I was waiting to give it to you when we had the ceremony. I didn’t know I should’ve given it to you before. I’m sorry for making you wait so long." There was so much emotion in his voice when he spoke. freewebnσvel.cѳm

Edie was so surprised, and she just sat there looking at him. Then she shook her head as if to bring herself out of her thoughts. "There’s no kneeling or a dozen roses?" she said, teasing him. It wasn’t the proposal she dreamed about when she was a little girl, but she was satisfied. After all, it was Stuart. She had a ring, and she had his heart. Her heart swelled with love for this man who always had her happiness in mind.
