Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Recollection

Soon, it was grandpa’s eightieth birthday. Greg’s Family wanted to have a huge feast and wanted to invite all the essential businessmen, but grandpa didn’t like crowds. Therefore, they decided to have a family reunion.

It was held at Greg’s home. Family and old friends were the only ones invited. As a Rolls-Royce pulled in their driveway, Donald got out of the car and opened the door for Joanna. She took a careful look at Donald’s face, "Darling, are you feeling alright? We can go home after I send our wishes to the old man. You just got out of the hospital yesterday. Your condition is my top priority."

The maid took them upstairs with Greg’s. Grandpa smiled; he was still so full of life. He was turning eighty, and because he couldn’t get around very well, he was in a wheelchair.

Pushing the wheelchair, Joanna said, "Grandpa, do you remember who we are? Donald grew up with me. He was my best friend. We come here every year to celebrate your birthday." He squinted and took a careful look at them, and he nodded, "Yes, yes, you were good children. I remember you both."

Joanna smiled softly, "Grandpa, I can’t believe how handsome you look. I am almost jealous, and you are so lucky to have Victoria and Joshua in your life."

Hearing Joshua’s name, Grandpa was still for a minute and asked Joanna, "Joanna, when will he be coming back?"

Grandpa’s memory wasn’t very good at times, he nodded and said, "Oh, so he won’t be here today?"

Joanna could see the expression on Donald’s face, and she looked like she was ready to explode with anger. Things were starting to feel really awkward, so Joanna quickly wrapped her arm around Donald and winked at Victoria.

Victoria was absolutely shocked to hear grandpa so abruptly mention Edie’s name. She made an immediate response, "Grandpa, I am so sorry, but you are wrong. Sometimes you are so forgetful. Donald was never here with Edie. She was the girl my father had adopted when she was only a child. Donald and Joanna have been together for a long time now. Grandpa thought about it and agreed with her since he forgot that his grandson had to work; it was possible that he forgot about this. It didn’t seem to bother Donald when grandpa spoke of Edie, and he looked calm. He was acting as though he didn’t even hear what he said. He showed no emotion on his face. What Joanna didn’t see was the light in his dark eyes.

Donald said with a polite smile, "Grandpa, I am so glad to see you looking so healthy and in such high spirits. We have to go as I have some business to tend to. I look forward to seeing you again."

Grandpa was a little disappointed, "What’s your hurry? Edie hasn’t arrived yet. I know she will be so happy to see you."

He wouldn’t stop; he kept saying her name over and over again. Joanna was getting more anxious. She knew Donald was in a hurry, so calmly, she said, "Grandpa, Donald has some work that he needs to take off right away. Please accept our apologies as we need to go."

"Alright, young people are always busy doing something. Edie is also too busy, and it has been such a long time since I have seen her."
