Chapter 282: Chapter 178: Specially Appointing Comrade Yang Qi as...

Following instructions, Qi Zai made multiple high-altitude patrols over the core and surrounding areas of Cangshan, its sharp eagle eyes carefully scanning the forest below.

But the forests of Cangshan were lush and the canopy was thick, making it difficult to observe the ground.

The "unknown beast" was also extremely vigilant and skilled at concealment, leaving very few traces of its activity, let alone allowing for a direct sighting.

For the moment, Qi Zai had found nothing.

Deng Lei sighed on the other end of the line, thanking him while remarking on the situation.

"This creature is a real handful; it’s practically a genius at hiding. Advisor Yang, thank you and Qi Zai for your hard work. Just keep an eye out for now. Safety is the top priority."

...

Around ten o’clock that morning, Yang Qi had just finished a thorough cleaning and disinfection of the wolf enclosure. He had rinsed off his tools and was about to check on the raccoons when his phone rang.

The caller ID read "Mei Ying."

"Hello, Sister Mei," Yang Qi answered.

"Xiao Yang, are you done with your work?" Mei Ying’s voice came through the phone, a little faster than usual.

"I just finished cleaning up in the Wolf District, and was about to..."

"Drop whatever you’re doing, even if you’re not finished," Mei Ying said directly. "Go back to your place right now and change into something nicer and more formal. Hmm... you don’t need a suit and tie, but don’t wear your work uniform. Just look neat and presentable. As soon as you’re changed, come to the auditorium immediately."

"The auditorium?"

Yang Qi was taken aback. "Sister Mei, is there an emergency meeting? Or an inspection from our superiors?"

The auditorium was generally only used for zoo-wide staff meetings or major events.

"It is a big meeting."

Mei Ying laughed on the other end of the line, her voice filled with unconcealed joy. "But this one’s for you. It’s a commendation ceremony! Hurry up, the leaders are all waiting. Oh, and..."

As if remembering something, she quickly added, "Bring all your cats and dogs with you."

"Bring Xiaojiu, Bai Wan, and the others? And they’re holding it just for me?"

Yang Qi paused for a moment, phone in hand.

Then, it suddenly dawned on him, and he blurted out, "Sister Mei, are people from the narcotics division here?"

Previously, Yang Qi, along with Xiaojiu, Bai Wan, Hu Zi, and Leopard, had assisted the city’s narcotics squad in taking down a drug lab and had even discovered one of the ringleaders attempting to escape through a tunnel.

Later, while cultivating in the mountains, he had coincidentally discovered and captured another leader who was hiding there.

Of the drug ring’s three core leaders, two had been taken down, directly or indirectly, by Yang Qi and his animal companions. Only the mysterious "big boss" behind the scenes remained at large, with very few leads.

’Looking at it now,’ he thought, ’could it be that the "big boss" who has been on the run has finally been caught?’

"It’s not just the narcotics squad."

Mei Ying’s voice on the other end of the line held a mixture of irrepressible excitement and awe. "The leaders from the White Tower Branch are here, as well as the Chief of the Municipal Bureau, the deputy chief in charge of criminal investigations, our superiors from the forestry system—even Vice Mayor Liu, who’s in charge of culture and education, has come."

"Ah, Xiao Yang, you’re completely famous across all of Donghua City’s departments now. I don’t think our zoo will be able to hold onto you for much longer~"

Mei Ying’s last sentence was half-joking and half-serious.

Someone with Yang Qi’s abilities and contributions was destined to be more than just an ordinary zookeeper.

Yang Qi let out a dry laugh.

"You’re exaggerating, Sister Mei. I’m still learning a great deal from Teacher Song. In that case, I’ll go change right now."

After hanging up, Yang Qi quickly put away his cleaning tools, hopped on the small electric scooter parked outside the Wolf District, and sped toward his dormitory.

His mind raced on the way. ’It’s understandable for leaders from the narcotics and forestry departments to show up, but why is the vice mayor for education here too?’

’My alma mater, Donghua University, hasn’t contacted me recently...’

’Wait!’

Suddenly, Yang Qi remembered someone.

Associate Professor Yu Chengbang from the Provincial Agricultural University!

Professor Yu had previously brought his students to the Zoo to thank him in person, but Yang Qi had said no further thanks were necessary.

’It seems likely that after Professor Yu went back, he reported the rescue incident and the key role I played to his superiors through the Provincial Agricultural University’s official channels.’

’The Agricultural University must have contacted the education department here in Donghua...’

’And that’s what drew the attention of the supervising city official.’

’An unexpected success, I suppose...’

Yang Qi shook his head and sped back to the Mountain-Back Courtyard.

He parked his scooter, hurried inside, and took a quick shower.

Then he opened his closet and picked out a relatively formal yet casual outfit—a shirt and dark pants. After changing, he looked clean-cut and sharp.

"Xiaojiu, Bai Wan, Hu Zi, Leopard, come here," Yang Qi called.

The four furry companions had already heard him moving about and gathered around, tilting their heads up to look at Yang Qi.

"MEOW~"

[Master, are we going out?]

"WOOF!"

[Are we going out to play?]

"WOOF WOOF!"

[Is it a mission?]

"WOOF?"

[Or are there treats involved?]

The furry companions asked one after another.

"I’m taking you all somewhere. When we get there, remember not to run around or make a ruckus."

Yang Qi said this as he took out their leashes.

Xiaojiu leaped gracefully onto Yang Qi’s shoulder and settled down, striking an elegant pose.

Yang Qi clipped the leashes onto Bai Wan, Hu Zi, and Leopard, carefully checking that their collars and the clasps were secure.

He adjusted his own collar in the mirror and, once satisfied, gave the call.

"Let’s go."

WOOF WOOF~

With his four animal companions in tow, Yang Qi headed toward the main auditorium in the Zoo’s central area.

Along the way, they inevitably ran into numerous visitors.

He drew a lot of attention: a young man with a perfectly composed black cat on his shoulder, leading three large dogs.

While Bai Wan, a Chinese Rural Dog, was a relatively common sight, the combination with Hu Zi and Leopard was striking. Their powerful, large-breed physiques, their bright, piercing eyes, and the calm, well-trained air about them as they walked made the group especially eye-catching.
