Chapter 228: Chapter 160: A Strange Case, Part 2

The gaze of the man in the lead locked directly onto Yang Qi, who was standing beside the car.

He was in his thirties, with a sharp buzz cut and a stern expression.

Stopping about two steps in front of Yang Qi, he first presented his credentials, his voice resonant and formal.

"Hello, we’re from the Ningshan County Forest Police. I’m Squadron Leader Luo Kaifeng."

Just as he was about to explain the purpose of his visit, Yang Qi cut him off with a natural smile, handing him a stack of credentials and documents.

"Hello, Captain Luo. I’m Yang Qi, a zookeeper at the Donghua City Wildlife Park."

"These are my credentials, along with the permits and authorization documents allowing me to temporarily leave the zoo with this clouded leopard cub. Please take a look."

Luo Kaifeng clearly hadn’t expected this reaction from Yang Qi, much less for him to so proactively and methodically produce so many documents.

He froze for a second, then instinctively took the file folder Yang Qi offered him.

The two young police officers behind him leaned in, their curiosity piqued.

Luo Kaifeng opened the folder. There was quite a lot inside.

An official work ID from the Donghua Wildlife Park, complete with a photograph and an embossed seal.

A letter of appointment as an "Investigation Technical Advisor" from the Hongshu District Public Security Bureau.

A certificate as a "Special Technical Advisor" from the Donghua City Police Dog Base.

A letter of appointment as a "Special Technical Advisor" from the Provincial Capital Red Star Zoo.

Two documents bearing official red seals: one from the Donghua Wildlife Park, an official statement and liability guarantee permitting zookeeper Yang Qi to take the park’s clouded leopard cub, "Ta Xue," on necessary outings under specific circumstances.

The other was an approval and registration document for the aforementioned activity, issued by the relevant forestry department of Donghua City.

These credentials and documents carried a lot of weight.

The "advisor" appointments in particular, while not granting any direct administrative authority, clearly indicated Yang Qi’s professional expertise and recognition in his field—far beyond that of an ordinary zookeeper.

The two young police officers passed the documents between them, their faces showing their astonishment.

The youngest-looking one, who still had the air of a student about him, was looking at the appointment letter from the Hongshu Branch when he suddenly looked up. His eyes went wide as he stared at Yang Qi, his voice filled with suppressed excitement.

"Yang Qi? You... you’re the Advisor Yang from the municipal bureau they’ve been talking about? The one who helped crack that huge case, who used a police dog to catch the drug lord in the mountains? Advisor Yang Qi from the Donghua Zoo?!"

At his words, Luo Kaifeng immediately remembered as well.

There had indeed been internal bulletins and rumors circulating within the municipal bureau system about a young zookeeper from the Donghua Zoo who had a unique talent for police dog training and animal behavior analysis.

He had assisted the police in solving difficult cases on multiple occasions, earning several merits and being hired as an advisor by a number of different units.

He just never imagined that the legendary "Advisor Yang" would turn out to be this exceptionally young man from his own hometown of Ningshan!

The stern look on Luo Kaifeng’s face was instantly replaced with surprise and dawning realization. He quickly looked back at Yang Qi, gathered the documents, and his attitude abruptly became much warmer and more courteous.

"Well, I’ll be. It’s Advisor Yang. This is a classic case of failing to recognize one of our own. My apologies, my apologies! I had no idea you were also from Ningshan, Advisor Yang." He proactively extended his hand.

Yang Qi smiled and shook his hand. "You’re too kind, Captain Luo. It’s all part of the job. I didn’t expect to run into officers from the Forest Police back in my hometown, either."

As he shook Yang Qi’s hand, Luo Kaifeng instinctively glanced toward the street corner nearby.

Over there, Yang Bo was craning his neck to look in their direction, his expression shifting from eager anticipation of a good show to baffled disbelief.

Yang Qi followed his gaze and glanced over as well. The smile on his face didn’t falter as he asked quietly, "He’s the one who reported me, isn’t he? For illegally keeping a clouded leopard?"

"Ah... well..."

Luo Kaifeng was momentarily speechless. By regulation, he couldn’t disclose the informant’s identity, but given the circumstances...

The excited young officer beside them, however, had fewer reservations. Perhaps because he thought the whole thing was a bit of a farce, he couldn’t help but chime in.

"He reported you, Advisor Yang, for illegally keeping a ’Clouded Cat’... Heh, can’t even tell the difference between a Clouded Cat and a clouded leopard."

"Still, you can’t really blame him. It’s impressive enough for a regular person to recognize it as a protected feline species. Not everyone is an expert like you, Advisor Yang."

"Yeah, the fact that he identified it as a Clouded Cat means he has some basic knowledge, at least knowing the animal is protected," the other officer added with a laugh.

"AHEM!"

Luo Kaifeng cleared his throat twice, giving his subordinates a look to stop them from further undermining the situation.

He turned to Yang Qi with a serious expression. "Advisor Yang, this has all been a complete misunderstanding. Your documents are all in order. We won’t disturb you any further. Apologies for taking up your personal time."

"Xiaoqi, is something wrong? Who are these gentlemen...?" His grandmother, having heard the noise, came out with a nervous expression, looking worried.

"It’s nothing, Grandma." frёewebηovel.cѳm

Yang Qi hurried over to support her, offering a reassuring smile. "These gentlemen are from the county’s Forest Police. They just needed to ask me about a work matter, but it’s all sorted out now."

"That’s right, that’s right! Hello, ma’am!"

Luo Kaifeng’s face immediately broke into a smile. He and the two officers greeted the grandmother. "We just came to consult Advisor Yang about a professional matter. We had no idea he was your grandson. He’s such a promising young man!"

"Hello, Grandma."

"Grandma, you look so healthy and strong!"

The two young police officers also chimed in with sweet-tongued greetings.

Seeing their friendly demeanor and hearing they were police officers who had come to "consult" her grandson, the nervousness in the grandmother’s heart instantly vanished, her face blooming into a wide smile.
