Chapter 42: The Day He Laughed
Chapter 42
.
.
After eating the blue bubblegum ice cream, Jiang Li’s mouth had turned completely blue. He couldn’t stop feeling embarrassed, especially with the way Shen Yu kept staring at him and repeatedly comparing him to the Smurfs.
Jiang Li was embarrassed to the core.
At that moment, he silently decided that December 12th, 20XX, would be a day he would remember forever. He had never been this happy before. Instead of returning to Shen Yu’s penthouse, they had spent the entire day outside, wandering from place to place, stopping wherever they felt like.
Now, they had ended up at a mall—because Shen Yu was the one who had gotten hungry this time.
For Jiang Li, finishing an entire bowl of food was already a great achievement, but today even he surprised himself. When Shen Yu ordered a pizza, Jiang Li had immediately shaken his head, insisting that he didn’t like pizza.
But in the end, Shen Yu bought it anyway.
When the pizza arrived, the smell was so tempting that Jiang Li found himself constantly glancing at it while quietly eating his vanilla ice cream—since, unfortunately, they didn’t have his favorite blue bubblegum flavor.
At first, he resisted. He sat there silently, watching Shen Yu eat, telling himself he didn’t want any.
But as time passed, the craving became impossible to ignore. freewёbnoνel.com
"Are... you going to finish that?" Jiang Li finally asked, his voice so soft it nearly disappeared under the noise of the mall.
Shen Yu raised a brow and looked at him.
"Why are you suddenly curious? You don’t like pizza, right?" he said, taking another bite of his slice.
From his experience with omegas, Shen Yu considered himself somewhat of an expert when it came to their eating habits. Shen Mei and Lin Yushen were both like this—always saying they weren’t hungry, only to end up eating anyway. Especially Shen Mei when it came to fried hot wings.
Jiang Li lowered his gaze and nodded, too embarrassed to directly ask for a slice. Meanwhile, Shen Yu continued eating, a quiet chuckle escaping him. If it were Shen Mei, she would have already sat beside him and started eating without asking. If it were Lin Yushen, he would have blinked pitifully until Shen Yu softened and shared.
But Jiang Li...
He clearly wanted the pizza, yet he stayed quiet, staring down at his ice cream and eating it as if nothing was wrong.
Shen Yu sighed softly.
"But it’s quite large. Can you help me finish it?"
Jiang Li’s eyes lit up instantly, like a cat finally given cream. Realizing his reaction, he quickly cleared his throat and nodded, trying to act composed as he reached for a slice.
In the end, he ate seventy-five percent of the pizza.
...
After eating pizza, ice cream, vanilla latte, honey cake, and chips, Jiang Li was completely stuffed. All he wanted to do now was sleep.
But he refused.
He couldn’t waste this day by sleeping.
As they walked through the mall, they passed a baby store. Jiang Li’s steps slowed before coming to a complete stop.
He stared silently at the display.
His eyes gradually dimmed as they landed on a pair of tiny baby shoes. Almost unconsciously, his hand moved to his stomach, resting there gently.
He had almost forgotten.
He had been so happy that he forgot his biggest problem.
How was he supposed to tell Shen Yu that he was pregnant with his child?
Shen Yu had never treated him like this before. Jiang Li was afraid—afraid that telling him would ruin everything.
He exhaled shakily.
Let’s not ruin today.
Ahead, Shen Yu noticed that the footsteps behind him had stopped. He frowned slightly and turned back, only to see Jiang Li standing in front of a baby store, staring at a doll dressed in tiny clothes.
Shen Yu walked back, his gaze shifting from the doll to Jiang Li.
"Do you have a baby brother you miss?" he asked.
Jiang Li froze.
What was he supposed to say?
"No... I’m the youngest," he muttered quickly. Before Shen Yu could question him further, he added, "It’s just cute. I’ve always liked babies."
Then he quickly turned the question back.
"What about you? Do you like kids?"
Shen Yu’s gaze lingered on the doll for a moment before he shook his head.
"No."
That single word hit Jiang Li harder than he expected. His chest tightened painfully, and his vision blurred slightly.
How could one word hurt this much?
He swallowed, trying to push down the lump forming in his throat.
"Let’s go," Shen Yu said.
Jiang Li nodded and followed quietly behind him.
The car ride back to the penthouse was silent. Jiang Li glanced at the digital screen—it was almost five. The sky had already begun to darken.
Shen Yu leaned slightly on the steering wheel and turned toward him.
"Should I just—"
"My wish was to spend the entire day with you... and the day ends at midnight," Jiang Li interrupted softly.
Shen Yu paused for a moment before nodding.
Back at the penthouse, they settled on the couch and decided to watch a movie—Jiang Li’s choice.
Shen Yu had expected a popular romance drama, but to his surprise, Jiang Li picked a Western action film.
John Wick.
Jiang Li leaned against the couch, already looking half-asleep as he stared at the screen. The hardest part for him was following the subtitles since his English wasn’t very strong.
"It seems you know English very well," Shen Yu said, holding a can of cola. "I’m impressed."
Jiang Li didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
"Can you introduce yourself to me in English?" Shen Yu added, clearly amused.
Jiang Li, already exhausted, tried to comply. His words came out slurred, mixed with his accent, and barely made sense.
"Hello... my name is Jiang Li. I am... twenty... yes."
Shen Yu nearly choked on his drink.
And on that December 12th, for the first time, Shen Yu truly laughed at something the omega beside him said.
The omega he once wanted far away from him.
The movie hadn’t even reached halfway before Jiang Li fell asleep, his body curled slightly from the cold.
For the second time that year, Shen Yu carried the sleeping omega to the guest room.
A/N : IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
Guys, I’ve been thinking about giving Luo Xin and Shen Mei their own full volume as our side couple. (^_^;)
I’ve never really liked it when side couples only get a few Chapters. They deserve their own story too, and I have so many ideas I’d love to explore for them.
But I can only make that happen if there’s enough interest from you all!
So please leave a comment and let me know if you’d like to read a full volume dedicated to Luo Xin and Shen Mei. Your support and feedback will help me decide whether to write it.
If enough of you want it... then I’ll happily make it happen! \(^o^)/
