Chapter 40: Like a Rose Kissed by Snow

Chapter 40

.

.

Just as Shen Yu was about to start driving, he suddenly paused and turned to Jiang Li.

The omega was resting his head against the car window, his warm breath fogging up the glass.

"When you said you wanted to spend the day with me... where do you want to go?" Shen Yu asked.

The car fell quiet again.

Jiang Li lifted his fingers to his lips, thinking for a moment before softly shaking his head.

"Anywhere is fine," he replied.

Shen Yu nodded slightly.

"The weather is pretty cold today. Would it be okay if we spend it at my penthouse?" he asked.

Jiang Li quickly nodded, a small spark of warmth lighting up inside him at the thought. He still remembered how peaceful it had felt spending the night there.

But, as if his body loved betraying him at the worst times—

His stomach suddenly rumbled loudly.

Jiang Li froze.

He had completely forgotten that he left his apartment with Luo Xin without eating anything.

His cheeks immediately heated up, and when he glanced at Shen Yu, the embarrassment only deepened.

Shen Yu stared at him for a moment before a faint, knowing smirk appeared on his lips. Without saying anything, he turned forward and started the car.

"Let’s stop at a café first," he said.

Jiang Li nodded, lowering his head in embarrassment.

At this point, he was convinced—

Today was officially Embarrass Jiang Li National Day.

His gaze drifted to the digital screen in the car.

12th December, 20XX.

Yes.

He would mark this day forever.

The thought made him chuckle softly.

Shen Yu raised a brow at the sound.

"What’s so funny?" he asked, his voice as calm and controlled as ever.

Jiang Li blinked.

He had always admired that about Shen Yu—how he could keep his emotions hidden so well, both in his voice and his expression.

But then...

He remembered earlier.

Just moments ago, he had seen everything in Shen Yu’s eyes.

Guilt.

Hope.

Sadness.

And just recalling that made Jiang Li feel warm, even in the cold weather.

The car came to a stop in front of Jade Lantern Café.

Shen Yu stepped out first and waited by the driver’s side, watching silently as Jiang Li remained seated inside.

Jiang Li was staring down blankly, clearly lost in thought.

Shen Yu cleared his throat.

Jiang Li startled immediately, his honey-brown eyes darting around like a deer caught in headlights.

No...

More like a startled bunny.

"Are you planning to sit there all day... or do you want me to open the door for you?" Shen Yu asked, leaning casually against the car.

Jiang Li’s eyes widened. freewёbnoνel.com

"I can—I can do it!" he said quickly, fumbling as he opened the door and stepped out.

Once the door shut behind him, he stared at the ground, mortified.

God... he was so embarrassing.

When he finally looked up, he caught the faint amusement dancing in Shen Yu’s dark eyes.

Shen Yu turned away first.

"Let’s go," he said, pushing his hair back before slipping his hands into his coat pockets.

Jiang Li quickly followed behind him.

Unlike usual days, the café wasn’t crowded.

Shen Yu glanced around before asking Jiang Li where he wanted to sit.

Jiang Li pointed toward a table near the floor-to-ceiling window at the far back.

Shen Yu nodded, and they made their way there in silence.

For a few minutes, Jiang Li stared down at the table.

When he finally looked up, he noticed Shen Yu gazing out the window, watching the snowflakes fall softly to the ground.

The air outside carried a faint scent—like snow-covered cherry blossoms.

"You know..." Shen Yu said suddenly, his voice quiet, "seeing flowers covered in snow reminds me of your scent."

Jiang Li froze.

My scent...

"You mean my pheromones?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly as he tried to hold back the emotions rising in his chest.

"Mn," Shen Yu hummed softly, his attention already shifting to the menu.

Jiang Li’s heart began to pound violently, like a trapped bird trying to break free.

How...?

If Shen Yu was a beta...

How could he smell it?

Because of Jiang Li’s broken gland, almost no one could detect his pheromones—only powerful Alphas with exceptionally keen senses, like Taehyun.

Then...

"What does it smell like?" Jiang Li asked again, his voice softer now, his eyes already beginning to sting.

"Like a rose kissed by snow," Shen Yu replied simply. "It’s a beautiful scent."

The tears fell before Jiang Li could stop them.

At the same moment, Shen Yu looked up—

Only to see tears streaming down Jiang Li’s face.

If Shen Yu really was a beta...

Then how could he—

Jiang Li’s thoughts broke apart as a small smile curved on his lips through the tears.

He wasn’t strange.

He wasn’t wrong.

Shen Yu frowned slightly, confused.

He had only given a compliment.

So why was Jiang Li crying?

And yet... he was smiling. frёeωebɳovel.com

Jiang Li let out a soft chuckle and quickly wiped his tears.

"I’m hungry," he said, standing up to go order.

God...

He really was a crybaby.

Crying just because he was hungry.

Shen Yu reached out and caught his wrist.

"I’ll go. What do you want?" he asked.

Jiang Li immediately sat back down without protest—he truly disliked standing in lines.

"A vanilla latte... and honey cake," he said.

Shen Yu frowned for a brief moment, trying to hide it, but Jiang Li noticed.

"What’s wrong?" Jiang Li asked.

Shen Yu shook his head as he stood.

"That’s too much sugar," he muttered before walking away.

Jiang Li blinked.

If that was too much sugar...

Then how much did Shen Yu usually consume?

The thought lingered in his mind even after Shen Yu returned.

As Jiang Li sipped his latte, he found himself glancing repeatedly at the coffee Shen Yu was drinking.

Noticing the curious looks, Shen Yu calmly removed the lid, placed a clean straw inside, and handed it to him.

Jiang Li’s eyes widened—

But curiosity won.

He leaned forward and took a sip.

And instantly froze.

What the hell was this... bitter poison?
