Chapter 30: Stranger...
Chapter 30
Light... it was so bright. Maybe too bright.
Shen Yu’s eyes slowly opened, only to close again immediately as the harsh light forced him to blink repeatedly. When he tried again, his vision adjusted slowly, but something felt off—his eyes were strangely sensitive.
Usually, with the floor-to-ceiling windows in his room, sunlight had never been a problem. Bright light had never bothered him before, but today, his eyes clearly begged to differ. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
He slowly tried to sit up, and that’s when he realized the scent.
Whisky and rosewood.
It was a strange combination, unfamiliar, yet it smelled insanely good. Even though it was the first time he had encountered such a scent, he recognized it instantly.
It was his.
The realization felt strange... but at the same time, it felt right.
"H-he’s... he’s awake..."
A voice came from his right.
Turning his head, Shen Yu saw a girl in a bright pink nurse uniform, holding a document in her hands. Her hair was tied into a low ponytail, and her dark, owlish eyes widened the moment their gazes met.
He could even see her breath hitch.
At her reaction, Shen Yu frowned.
What was wrong with her?
Noticing his expression, she quickly lowered her gaze, turned around, and rushed to the door, calling out for the doctor.
"Why am I here...?" Shen Yu asked when she returned, his voice steady despite everything.
He still remembered how he got here... but he wanted to know what was happening to him.
The girl, who looked no older than twenty, hesitated. She looked down, gulping softly, clearly not someone who would speak easily. Seeing that, Shen Yu leaned back against the pillow, choosing silence instead.
The room felt... overwhelming.
Fresh lilies and daisies filled the air so strongly that he could almost taste them. At first, he didn’t understand where the scent was coming from, but when he turned his head to the left, he saw a bouquet placed nearby, making him frown slightly.
And the noise—
The loud conversations outside.
The wheels of stretchers rolling across the floor.
Footsteps echoing down the hallway.
He heard everything.
Even the sound of the door opening felt too sharp.
The doctor walked in, carrying the scent of strong cologne—something woody and heavy.
"Mr. Shen, do you feel any discomfort anywhere? What about your neck?" the doctor asked.
Shen Yu simply stared at him for a moment before slowly shaking his head.
"No... it’s just that this hospital is too loud," he muttered.
The doctor’s blue eyes widened instantly.
Slowly, almost cautiously, the man stepped closer, studying Shen Yu as if he were some kind of experiment.
"How is this possible..." he muttered in English, his astonishment so clear that he abandoned Chinese entirely.
"What are you...?" he asked, before turning toward the nurse, who still looked dazed.
"Zhao Ruoxi, what do the reports say about Mr. Shen?"
The girl nodded quickly, glancing down at the documents in her hands.
The atmosphere grew tense.
Shen Yu felt irritated under the doctor’s constant stare. He wanted to tell him to stop looking—but he held it back.
For now.
"He... manifested as an Alpha..." Zhao Ruoxi said quietly.
Shen Yu’s eyes widened.
What...?
"That’s strange..." The doctor muttered still staring at Shen Yu.
But Shen Yu remained frozen.
His heart pounded violently in his chest, so fast it hurt.
Was this panic?
He didn’t know anymore.
All he knew was that there was no happiness—only panic, sadness, and disbelief.
This can’t be true...
How can this be true...?
Anyone would be happy at such a revelation.
Who wouldn’t want to be an Alpha—or even an enigma?
At the top of the food chain.
With pheromones strong enough to make others submit.
It would be a dream.
A dream to wake up and find out you had manifested as an Alpha.
It would have been a dream for him too...
But only if it had happened ten years ago.
Or even nine.
Back when he believed his father—or He Lian—would finally love him if he manifested.
Back when he saw how people like that received everything he had ever wanted.
But as he grew up... alone... abandoned by everyone simply because he never manifested, he began to understand something.
He didn’t want to become an Alpha.
He had only wanted it because he thought it would make people love him.
And if he manifested now... they still wouldn’t love him for who he was.
Only for what he became.
That was when he stopped caring.
When he started hating the idea of becoming one.
When he became grateful that he never did.
But now...
There was something else he hated about Alphas.
How they could take whatever they wanted...
Without consent.
Because they were Alphas.
Just like he did with Jiang Li.
"Sir... Mr. Shen..."
The doctor’s voice cut through his thoughts like an irritating buzz, forcing Shen Yu to look up.
"We need to run deeper tests. I don’t think you’re just an Alpha, sir... maybe an enigma," the doctor added, though his voice lowered slightly under Shen Yu’s cold glare.
"Why do you think so?" Shen Yu asked, his tone devoid of any excitement.
Zhao Ruoxi and the doctor exchanged glances before swallowing nervously.
"No Alpha has purple eyes, sir. Even during rut, their eyes turn golden..."
"But not purple."
Shen Yu froze.
Purple...?
How could his eyes be purple?
"I think... he’s an enigma, sir," Zhao Ruoxi added softly, gripping the documents tighter.
Shen Yu let out a quiet chuckle before leaning back against the bed.
A headache was building, deep and persistent.
Being an Alpha was one thing.
But an enigma...?
That meant being even more powerful than Teahyun—a dominant Alpha.
And that meant going back to the beginning.
Back to his family.
Back to expectations.
Back to being used.
God...
He wished he was neither.
Yet when Shen Yu closed his eyes, the only thing he could think about was Jiang Li.
And for the first time in years...
He didn’t know who he was anymore.
