Chapter 8: The Separation Point

The forest path felt wrong in a way Seraphina couldn’t ignore anymore.

Not because it was dangerous.

But because it was prepared.

Every step she and Kael took forward felt like it had already been measured by someone else. The ground was too stable. The spacing between trees too even. Even the silence felt arranged, like the forest had been instructed not to interfere.

Seraphina slowed slightly without realizing it.

Kael noticed immediately.

"Don’t stop," he said quietly.

"I’m not stopping," she replied.

"You slowed down."

"I’m thinking."

"That’s worse."

She ignored him.

Her eyes scanned ahead again.

The path continued forward in a straight line that didn’t match natural forest geography. No curves. No deviations. Just a direct route deeper into unknown territory.

Seraphina exhaled slowly.

"...We’re being guided."

"Yes," Kael said.

"Still?"

"Yes."

She clicked her tongue softly.

"That carriage wasn’t just a meeting point."

"No."

"It was a signal."

Kael glanced at her briefly.

"You’re adapting quickly."

"I hate losing control," she said simply.

That was all.

No drama.

No exaggeration.

Just truth.

Kael didn’t respond immediately.

Because he understood that better than her jokes.

They kept moving.

Behind them, the forest had fully sealed.

Not physically.

But perceptually.

The feeling of retreat was gone.

Seraphina noticed that too.

"We can’t go back," she said.

Kael nodded once.

"No."

A pause.

Then she added:

"That’s annoying."

Kael exhaled slightly.

"You’re underestimating the situation again."

"I’m not."

"You are emotionally normalizing it."

"That sounds made up."

"It’s not."

She glanced at him.

"Are you always like this under pressure?"

"Yes."

"That explains a lot."

Kael didn’t respond.

Ahead, the path began to slope downward.

Subtle at first.

Then more obvious.

Seraphina slowed again.

This time Kael didn’t immediately correct her.

Because he felt it too.

The air was changing.

Denser.

Colder.

Less natural.

Seraphina looked forward.

"...We’re going underground."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

"That’s not comforting."

"I agree."

She looked at him briefly.

"You say that a lot."

"It’s accurate a lot."

Fair.

They continued downward.

The trees above slowly thinned until only faint silhouettes remained overhead. The light dimmed, not naturally, but evenly, like something was controlling how much they were allowed to see.

Seraphina spoke quietly.

"That carriage voice... it said I was observed."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

Kael hesitated slightly.

"...Before academy enrollment."

Seraphina stopped walking for half a step.

Then continued.

"That’s a long time."

"Yes."

"And you knew?"

"I suspected."

"You didn’t tell me."

"You would’ve ignored it."

She paused.

"...Probably."

Kael glanced at her.

"That’s why."

Silence stretched again.

Seraphina didn’t like that answer.

Not because it was wrong.

Because it was correct.

They continued deeper until the path widened slightly into a carved tunnel-like passage. Not stone. Not natural cave.

Something in between.

As if the earth had been reshaped rather than excavated.

Seraphina touched the wall briefly as she passed.

It was warm.

"...This isn’t normal construction."

Kael looked at it.

"No."

"Then what is it?"

"Formation carving," he said.

She frowned.

"That sounds expensive."

"It is."

She pulled her hand back.

"So Noctaire is rich, organized, and obsessed with me."

Kael corrected her immediately.

"With classification."

"That doesn’t make it better."

"It makes it worse."

She nodded.

"Good."

Kael looked at her again.

"...You’re enjoying this too much."

"I’m not enjoying it."

"You’re smiling."

"I smile when I process stress."

"That’s not what that is."

She ignored him.

The tunnel opened into a wider chamber ahead.

Seraphina stopped at the edge.

Kael did too.

Inside—

A platform.

Circular.

Surrounded by faint glowing markings embedded into the structure itself.

Not magic circles she recognized.

Something more complex.

More layered.

Seraphina narrowed her eyes.

"...That’s a transfer gate."

Kael nodded once.

"Yes."

"And we just walked into it willingly."

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"That feels like a mistake."

Kael didn’t respond.

Because it was.

But they were already inside.

The markings on the floor began to glow faintly brighter.

Seraphina stepped slightly back.

Kael shifted closer.

"This is activation," he said.

"I noticed."

"Can you disrupt it?"

She glanced at it again.

"No."

"That was too fast."

"It’s not designed for interference," she said. "It’s designed for inevitability."

Kael didn’t like that answer.

Neither did she.

The glow intensified.

The air around them tightened.

Seraphina exhaled slowly.

"...So this is the real capture point."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"...We could’ve avoided this if you told me earlier."

"You wouldn’t have believed me earlier."

She paused.

Then admitted quietly:

"Fair."

A faint hum filled the chamber.

The markings stabilized into full light.

The platform was now fully active.

Seraphina looked at it for a moment longer.

Then sighed.

"...Well."

Kael glanced at her.

"This is where you panic."

"I don’t panic."

"You react."

"That sounds worse."

"It is."

She stepped onto the platform fully.

Kael didn’t stop her this time.

But he stayed beside her.

Immediately.

Seraphina noticed.

"...Still here?"

"Yes."

"That’s loyalty."

"That’s stupidity."

She smiled faintly.

"I prefer loyalty."

The light intensified again.

The platform began to resonate.

Seraphina’s expression shifted slightly.

"...Kael."

"Yes."

"If this separates us..."

"I know."

She looked at him for a second longer than usual.

Then nodded once.

"Good."

Kael didn’t respond.

Because he understood what she meant.

Not "good" as in happy.

"Good" as in prepared.

The air snapped.

The transfer activated.

The world around them blurred.

Not violently.

Not painfully.

Just decisively.

Like reality had decided it was time for them to stop standing there.

Seraphina felt Kael’s presence beside her for a fraction of a second longer.

Then—

Nothing.

Silence.

Weightlessness.

And then—

A new space forming around her.

When her vision stabilized, she was no longer in the tunnel chamber.

She was standing on stone.

Cold.

Massive.

And unfamiliar.

A vast hall stretched around her.

High ceilings.

Distant pillars.

Soft, controlled lighting embedded into architecture that felt ancient and modern at the same time.

Seraphina slowly looked around.

"...So that’s where we are now."

Her voice echoed slightly.

No response came.

She turned her head.

"...Kael?"

Silence.

No presence beside her.

No pressure behind her.

Just empty space.

Seraphina stood still for a moment.

Then exhaled once.

"...Separated."

Her expression didn’t change immediately.

Then—

A faint smile formed.

Not playful.

Not amused.

Controlled.

"...Of course."

She slowly raised her head toward the far end of the hall.

Where a single figure stood waiting.

Not armored.

Not hidden.

Just visible now.

This time fully.

And Seraphina understood immediately.

This was not the carriage anymore.

Not the forest.

Not retrieval units.

This was the source.

The voice from before.

Waiting in person. freёwebnoѵel.com

And as it spoke again—

it didn’t introduce itself.

It simply said:

"Welcome, Seraphina Valois."
