Chapter 14: The Woman Watching From Above

"I’ve wanted to meet you properly for quite some time."

Seraphina immediately pointed upward.

"That sentence alone makes me distrust you completely."

The silver-haired woman laughed softly.

Not politely.

Actually laughed.

And somehow that felt more dangerous.

Around them, the chamber groaned violently as another tremor ripped through Noctaire. Water continued crashing from the broken coolant systems overhead while emergency crimson lights flashed across the flooding floor.

Yet the woman above looked perfectly calm.

Like the collapsing facility was mildly inconvenient at worst.

Seraphina narrowed her eyes.

"Oh, I KNOW your type."

The woman leaned lightly against the upper railing.

"That sounds judgmental."

"It is."

Kael shifted slightly beside Seraphina.

Closer again.

Subtle.

Automatic.

The woman noticed immediately.

Interesting amusement flickered across her golden eyes.

"You’re protective."

Kael’s expression didn’t change.

"You’re blocking the exit."

"That wasn’t denial," Seraphina whispered immediately.

Kael ignored her professionally.

The woman smiled faintly.

"I like her."

"That’s unfortunate for me," Seraphina answered.

Another violent tremor shook the chamber.

A large crack spread across the ceiling overhead with a deafening metallic scream before part of the upper structure collapsed directly into the flooded floor below.

Water exploded upward.

Several guards stumbled backward.

One nearly fell completely.

Seraphina pointed instantly.

"That one survives horror movies."

The guard looked confused.

Reasonable reaction honestly.

Behind them, Theren pressed fingers sharply against his communicator.

"Emergency stabilization failed," a distorted voice answered through static.

Then:

"Lower containment sectors are destabilizing."

Silence.

Seraphina slowly turned.

"...You people REALLY have basement horrors."

"Noctaire prefers technical terminology," Theren replied calmly.

"That response somehow confirmed it harder."

The silver-haired woman sighed softly from above.

"Theren, if your containment failure reaches my research wing again, I’m removing your budget personally."

Seraphina blinked.

Then stared upward in disbelief.

"...Your organization is collapsing and you’re threatening him financially?"

"It motivates efficiency."

"That is the most evil thing I’ve heard today."

Unexpectedly—

Kael almost smiled.

Almost.

Seraphina caught it instantly.

"Oh my god. You thought that was funny."

"No."

"You’re literally lying with your face."

Another loud metallic impact echoed somewhere deeper inside the facility.

This one different.

Not structural.

Heavy.

Like something enormous slammed against reinforced steel far below them.

Several guards immediately stiffened.

One actually whispered:

"...No."

Seraphina looked around slowly.

"That reaction was deeply unhelpful."

The silver-haired woman finally pushed herself away from the railing and began descending the upper staircase toward them.

Elegant.

Unhurried.

Like she was arriving at a formal gathering instead of a disaster.

The closer she got, the more wrong her calmness felt.

Long silver hair untouched by the chaos around them.

Dark formal uniform without a single wrinkle.

Sharp golden eyes filled with dangerous amusement.

Seraphina disliked her immediately.

Which honestly meant she was probably interesting.

The woman finally stepped onto the flooded chamber floor.

Water splashed softly around her boots.

Kael immediately shifted half a step forward.

Protective again.

The woman noticed. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

Again.

"How fascinating," she murmured.

Seraphina pointed instantly.

"See? THIS is what I meant earlier. You keep talking like you’re secretly writing research notes about us."

"That would be unprofessional."

"That was not a denial."

The woman laughed again.

Okay.

That laugh was becoming suspiciously likable.

Dangerous development.

"Seraphina," the woman said suddenly.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Not because she spoke loudly.

Because she used her name so casually.

Seraphina narrowed her eyes.

"...How do you know me."

"I know many things."

"Horrible answer. Try again."

Another violent tremor interrupted the chamber before the woman could respond.

This one stronger than before.

The lights overhead flickered violently.

Then one entire section exploded in sparks.

The chamber darkened for one terrible second before emergency crimson lighting returned again.

And suddenly—

everything looked worse.

The flooding water reflected the red emergency lights across the walls like moving blood.

Steam poured from broken coolant pipes.

Metal screamed somewhere above them.

The entire structure felt unstable now.

Alive almost.

Seraphina looked around slowly.

"...Okay this place officially crossed from ’dramatic villain headquarters’ into ’deeply concerning nightmare facility.’"

"Accurate," the woman replied calmly.

"There you go again."

Kael suddenly grabbed Seraphina’s wrist.

Firm.

Immediate.

"We’re moving."

And this time—

he actually started walking instead of announcing escape plans dramatically while standing still.

Growth.

Excellent growth.

Seraphina almost looked proud.

Almost.

The group moved quickly toward the damaged corridor exit while guards spread ahead cautiously through the flooding hallways.

One of the guards stopped suddenly near the doorway.

"Wait."

Everyone froze.

The guard slowly looked downward.

Then stepped back immediately.

Deep claw marks covered the metallic floor ahead.

Fresh.

Long enough to tear through steel.

Silence filled the corridor entrance.

Seraphina stared.

"...No."

Another low sound echoed somewhere deeper below the facility.

Distorted.

Heavy.

Wrong.

The sound vibrated through the flooded floor beneath their feet.

One of the guards visibly panicked.

"We need to seal the lower sectors NOW."

"The lower sectors stopped responding three minutes ago," another answered immediately.

"That’s worse!"

"Yes!"

Finally.

People were reacting normally.

Seraphina appreciated it deeply.

The silver-haired woman crouched beside the claw marks calmly.

Which felt mentally unstable honestly.

She touched the damaged metal briefly.

Then sighed.

"...That reached this level faster than expected."

Seraphina stared at her.

"WHY are you saying that so casually?!"

The woman looked genuinely thoughtful.

"Because panic would be inefficient."

"That is absolutely something an evil genius says before disaster."

Kael suddenly pulled Seraphina fully behind him.

Fast enough to surprise her.

His entire posture changed instantly.

Sharp.

Focused.

Dangerous.

Then—

a loud metallic crash exploded from somewhere ahead.

The corridor lights flickered violently.

Another crash followed immediately after.

Closer.

One guard raised his weapon toward the darkness.

Another backed away instinctively.

Then something moved.

Fast.

A massive black shape flashed across the far corridor unnaturally quickly before disappearing behind the walls again.

Far too large.

Far too fast.

Everyone froze.

Seraphina blinked once.

Then pointed calmly toward the darkness.

"...I would like to leave now."

"For once," Kael answered quietly, "we agree immediately."

Then the corridor wall beside them exploded inward.
