Chapter 439: Chapter 439: Natural Curls
Tan You was in the kitchen boiling water. Wang Hunv’s eyes darted around. Instead of rushing to sort through today’s haul, she went to Tan You’s room first. Since Tan Lin and Cheng Wenhui had moved out, the large room on the west side naturally became Tan You’s.
Wang Hunv brought some hot water and wiped down Tan You’s cooling mat. While she was at it, she also wiped the nearby desk. As for Tan You’s books, she didn’t touch a single one.
Tan Deming watched his wife’s actions and said nothing. ’Of course I know her personality. She’s the type who won’t lift a finger without seeing a reward. If Tan You hadn’t bought her things today, and even gotten me to buy her a phone, would she be acting like this?’
When Tan You returned from washing up, she saw that the room had been cleaned spotless. With a soft laugh, Tan You picked up another towel and began drying her dripping hair. But when she noticed her hair was even curlier than before, she fell silent.
"How did my hair get so curly? I don’t remember it being this curly before."
During the hot summer, Tan You usually just tied her long hair into a bun, so she never paid attention to how curly the individual strands were. But now, as she toweled her hair, she thought her curly locks looked like seaweed—thick, dense, and glossy.
The Beauty System popped out. "Because Host’s hair has a natural tendency to curl, the System simply amplified this trait. Host, curly hair is very low-maintenance. It looks good with almost no effort."
Tan You shot it a glare. "My school doesn’t allow perms."
"But Host, your hair is naturally curly, not permed," the Beauty System countered with its own logic. "Besides, you usually wear your hair up. Even if someone notices, what can they do? They can’t force you to get it straightened, can they?"
’That’s true,’ Tan You thought. ’Oh well, natural curls it is.’ She actually quite liked curly hair. Just as the little system said, it was easy to manage. Compared to straight hair that lay flat against her scalp, it was clearly better at concealing minor facial imperfections.
With these thoughts in mind, Tan You tossed the towel aside and sprawled out on the cooling mat. The news about military training had come suddenly, which meant her plans for the near future would have to change.
Tan You had originally planned to upgrade to the intermediate-level system and complete one of its missions before school started. But with military training starting tomorrow, she would have to get it done during that time instead.
The Beauty System rubbed its little paws together. "Host, you only need to complete one more beginner-level mission for the system to upgrade. Do you want to draw a mission now?"
Tan You was tempted, but the memory of drawing two missions in a row last time made her hesitate. "According to the rules, I should only draw one mission at a time, right? I’m a bit worried... what if I end up with two again?"
"That won’t happen! It was an event with an extremely low probability," the Beauty System immediately retorted. "It’s a very rare situation. The system has already asked about it on the forums. So far, only two mission-takers have ever experienced this. One of them was you, Host."
"And the other was that unlimited-flow master?" Tan You finished its sentence. "Fine, I’ll trust you this one time."
’It’s already come to this. What choice do I have but to trust it?’
Thinking this, Tan You tapped the little system. "Draw the mission. I’ll take a look at it first, and then I can head out to complete it during military training."
"Okay, the system will now draw a mission for Host!" The little puppy did a spin in mid-air, and Tan You found herself beside the mission pool once again. After she pressed the button and only one mission sphere popped out, she couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief.
’It wasn’t that I found the missions difficult, but I really hate this feeling of being forced to do them.’
The Beauty System perched on her soul sphere. "Host, you’re already famous within the system network. Everyone is saying you’re a guaranteed future master."
"Stop sucking up," Tan You said, instantly understanding what the little system was getting at. "How can I be compared to that unlimited-flow master? I’m just a very ordinary person."
"Oh, right. I forgot to ask you. When I go out on missions in the future, will I run into other mission-takers?"
The Beauty System immediately froze up, its body emitting a burst of electronic static. Tan You got the hint. "Fine, I won’t ask."
’It must be related to the system’s core programming again,’ she mused. ’Speaking of which, I’d really like to see what other systems are like. But human society is governed by the law of the jungle. I wonder if it’s the same for systems?’
Pushing this speculation to the back of her mind, Tan You looked at the still-frozen Beauty System. ’This little thing... if it ever ran into another system, it would probably be annihilated in an instant. If that happened, would I cease to exist, too?’
’So, I’ll really have to be extra careful when I go out on missions from now on.’ Thinking this, Tan You flicked aside the little puppy that was sprawled on her soul sphere and turned her attention to the new client’s life story.
Before six in the morning, Tan Deming and Tan You set off. Tan Deming drove his electric tricycle, which was loaded with Tan You’s change of clothes and toiletries.
Tan You herself rode the second-hand bicycle she had acquired, keeping pace leisurely beside Tan Deming. The school required students to arrive by eight o’clock to get their dorm assignments and move in.
’At this hour, we can still grab breakfast in town,’ she thought. ’Come to think of it, the buns at Xinda’s near the school are really good. Maybe I should buy a few? Knowing how stingy Tan Lin is, he probably won’t be willing to buy breakfast out. I might as well get extra so they can have a little treat.’
After getting a large bag of breakfast to-go from Xinda, they arrived at Tan Lin’s house to find that Cheng Wenhui hadn’t left for work yet. Seeing Tan You’s questioning gaze, Cheng Wenhui smiled. "I took two hours off. I’ll head to work after I help you get settled in your dorm."
"There’s not much to settle," Tan You shrugged. "But go ahead if you want to. Isn’t this a bit of a big production, though? Is everyone going?"
Tan Yue hopped on her feet. "Everyone’s going!"
Tan You was indifferent. "Then let’s all go and see. Is the water ordered?"
Tan Lin said, "It’s ordered. We’ll pass by his shop on the way to the school, so we can just grab a jug then. After that, I’ll bring you a new jug every two days. Your dorm room isn’t very big, and your roommates might complain if you store too much water in there."
Tan You shrugged. "Fine, as long as you don’t find it to be a hassle."
Tan Lin chuckled. "It’s just delivering a jug of water, what’s the hassle? The school’s only a few steps away."
Just as Tan You had predicted, she showed up for military training registration with her entire clan in tow. With the old and the young all present, she directly set a new record for the largest number of accompanying family members.
After seeing Tan Lin haul up the large water jug, the other parents followed his example. Soon, at least everyone in Tan You’s Dorm 201 had their own jug, guaranteeing a basic supply of drinking water.
"You all are so thoughtful. With military training in this heat, you’ve got to drink plenty of water, right?"
"This way, they can fill their own bottles in the dorm before heading out, instead of having to drink the scalding hot water from the dispensers."
"This dorm room is tiny. It’s even more cramped with all these water jugs."
"Thankfully, military training is only for a week. We’ll just have to endure it."
