Chapter 60: Chapter 41: The 1950s’ Scorned Wife (41)
For that reason, Zhu Yun had no contact with her family for seven years.
Now that she was no longer the Wang Family’s daughter-in-law, she had gained her freedom and remarried.
Given Old Mrs. Wang’s personality of never letting herself be taken advantage of, Zhu Yun feared she would really summon that whole clan!
In reality, regardless of whether a formal document severing their ties existed, just by virtue of being Zhu Yun’s parents, they could legally and openly demand support from her under current law.
The issue of support payments was easy enough to handle. After all, the cost would be split among the five Zhu siblings, and expenses in the countryside were low. The old couple wouldn’t need much in a year, so it wasn’t something they could demand an exorbitant amount for.
But if the entire Zhu family came to visit and stayed for a few days, that would be enough to give her a major headache.
Although she didn’t care for rumors, being baselessly labeled as unfilial by Mrs. Wang would still be incredibly vexing.
Zhu Yun’s eyes darted. Hearing her husband’s quiet presence nearby, she summoned the Teletubbies.
As a piece of futuristic "black tech," the Teletubbies had come with her on a critical mission. To gather enough footage for a TV series, it naturally needed to pull up files on the people involved from time to time to ensure the plot’s integrity.
Therefore, from the moment it arrived in this world with her, the Teletubbies had released numerous nano-drones, ensuring there were no blind spots in a vast radius around them. Plus, the data retention period was exceptionally long.
Also, to maintain the integrity of the storyline, the hometowns and relatives of key characters were also designated surveillance targets.
Old Mrs. Wang hadn’t contacted the people back in their hometown yet, but Zhu Yun still instructed the Teletubbies to give her a heads-up the moment the old woman made a move.
Just as she was thinking, there was another knock on the main door.
Zhu Yun went to open the door. The visitor was Mrs. Wang, wearing a look of smug confidence.
"Let’s talk," the old woman said, standing on her tiptoes to peek inside. Not seeing Chu Shenyu, she lowered her voice. "You wouldn’t want your parents to find out you’re living so comfortably now, would you?"
Zhu Yun raised an eyebrow. ’I thought it would take her a few days of fuming before she came up with this angle.’
’But with Lin Jin right across the hall, it all made sense.’
Zhu Yun let go of the door and glanced at the man reading on the sofa against the wall. She then crossed her arms, leaned against the doorframe, and raised an eyebrow, looking as if she were all ears.
The old woman lowered her voice. "Back then, the Wang Family gave your parents a two-hundred-yuan betrothal gift. Now that you’re no longer my daughter-in-law, shouldn’t you return it?"
"Two hundred yuan seven years ago was worth a lot more than it is today. I saved that up penny by penny. It’s probably worth about two thousand yuan now."
"Otherwise, I’ll send a telegram and have your parents come. I’m sure they’d be delighted to visit once they hear we’re living right across the hall from each other."
Seeing Zhu Yun frown, Old Mrs. Wang continued with even more gusto. "Besides, it was your duty to work for our family after you married my son. Is there any daughter-in-law who isn’t filial to her elders?"
"What daughter-in-law from the countryside doesn’t do chores? And you have the audacity to make such an outrageous demand for the house, the job, and two or three thousand yuan? Who do you think you are?"
"And the only reason you could find a new man is because my son brought you to the city in the first place, isn’t it?"
"A person needs to learn some contentment and be grateful. I’m not asking for much. You can keep the rest of the money."
"I’ll have my youngest daughter come over. You’ll teach her how to cook properly, and once she’s learned, you’ll give her the job. She and I will live in the housing complex outside the factory. We’ll be far away, so how could this old woman possibly be an eyesore to you every day?"
"I’ll pretend I don’t even know you, and I won’t run my mouth to your parents. Imagine if people found out you’re living the high life in the city while your parents are back home eating bran and wild greens..."
The old woman grew more and more excited. "And you don’t want your new husband and his family to see what ruffians your parents are, do you? Even if you manage to pull the wool over their eyes for a while, who can stand it when everyone is calling you unfilial? If you get divorced again, you’ll never be able to remarry!"
"Just listen to me, and you can stay at home comfortably, raise children, and serve your husband without having to do any hard work. Spend too much time in the kitchen, and you’ll be covered in grease, turning into a haggard housewife. Who would want you then?" freēwēbηovel.c૦m
The old woman did, after all, have decades of life experience. If Zhu Yun were truly a young woman in her twenties from the countryside, she would have been completely cornered by some of those threats.
Zhu Yun chuckled. "Are you finished?"
Old Mrs. Wang thought for a moment. She had indeed covered all the bases. She nodded. "I’m finished. What do you think? We’re the only ones from the same hometown at the factory; we should help each other out."
"Help you how? By babysitting your grandson? By washing your daughter-in-law’s clothes? By waiting on you hand and foot, washing your feet?" Zhu Yun scoffed. "Old woman, go back and tell that shrewd daughter-in-law of yours."
"Don’t think you’ve found my weakness. I, Zhu Yun, stand alone. Why would someone who’s barefoot be afraid of someone wearing shoes?"
"If you dare summon those people from back home, I’ll make you experience what it’s like to lift a stone only to smash your own foot!"
