Chapter 1100: Chapter 477: Ten Thousand Leagues of Sea Breeze (Part 1)
"So you have to pick your timing just right—keep me company when you should keep me company, and give me plenty of time to cultivate when I need to cultivate. The mysteries of Magic are endless." Veronica playfully extended her index finger and poked Laine’s cheek. "For a long voyage like this, bringing me along is absolutely the right choice. Of course, it would be even better if that Dark Elf Maid of yours hadn’t come... Where is she?"
"Ollica? She’s in the cabin." Laine cast his gaze toward the interior of the ship. Dark Elves disliked showing their faces in public and hated the crowded deck and cabins, so she had chosen to stay inside the passenger room.
The great sailboat was loaded with a large number of soldiers, leaving very little space for each person. Laine and the others were assigned two passenger cabins of about fifteen square meters each, and then tragedy struck. Naturally, Veronica and Ollica insisted on sharing a room with Laine. The Jialan Witch and the Dark Elf Maid both declared they didn’t mind squeezing in a bit, while Alfred ended up having to stay in a room all by himself.
But that wasn’t the end of it. Given how cramped the great sailboat was, letting Alfred enjoy an entire cabin alone was obviously unrealistic. The stern, red-nosed naval captain took the initiative to requisition that cabin and sent Alfred to squeeze into the bunk beds with those Sea God Knights.
"In Afu’s words, the cabin is full of ’the stench of hell’ and ’the smell of Demons.’" Laine, smiling with narrowed eyes, slipped an arm around Veronica’s slender waist. "I can’t help feeling a bit sorry for him."
"Oh? Because I get the feeling you just don’t want him barging in at a critical moment." Veronica said with deliberate mischief. The Witch closed her eyes and clasped the big hand Laine had resting on her waist, leaning her back against his chest. She really did enjoy these moments when it was just the two of them. "So you made this arrangement on purpose."
"Afu is the same age as me—over thirty now—and he still isn’t married." Laine smoothly shifted the topic. "Veronica, do you have anyone suitable? Maybe one of those new female Members of Parliament from your Jialan Council or something—introduce him to one?"
"Oh, you’re unbelievable. A Witch and a Temple Knight? I’m guessing they’d be at each other’s throats before they even made it through five sentences." The scent of roses drifted from Veronica’s long black-brown hair cascading over her shoulders. The Jialan Witch glared at Laine in exasperation. "Are you serious?"
"All right, let’s drop it." Laine had only been speaking casually anyway. He suddenly reached out, letting his hand glide over Veronica’s cheek and her slender neck, and said gently, "Close your eyes, my dear. I’ve got something for you."
"What kind of gift?" Veronica obediently closed her eyes, a sweet warmth blooming in her heart.
"It’s for the tenth anniversary of us knowing each other. This is a memory that belongs to us alone. I’m giving this to you now. In my heart, you’ll always be that prickly, stubborn Witch bristling with thorns." Laine took out a small box.
Inside the box lay a golden ring, made from some unknown metal. In the flame-shaped diamond, a golden Iron Hammer infused with molten power was branded upon it, and the band of the ring was engraved with simple, unadorned ancient runes.
"It’s for me?" Veronica fell in love with the ring at once, her heart bursting with delight. "Thank you, I love it. Put it on me, dear."
"I begged this off a brother of mine. He’s an excellent craftsman." Laine carefully slipped the ring onto Veronica’s left ring finger. "You’re going to love it."
"Thank you... Laine, you’re so sweet." Feeling the stirring power contained within the ring, Veronica felt a little drunk. She closed her eyes, rose up on her tiptoes, and pressed her rosy lips against Laine’s mouth.
Right there on the bustling deck of Boldro’s Great Sailboat, everything else vanished.
All that remained was the salty sea breeze and the sound of waves slapping against the hull.
An endless sea wind, blue ocean and clear sky.
After a long while.
"The wind’s strong out here. Let’s go inside."
"Mm."
