Chapter 13: Confession?

As the dinner continued, Alden took a taste of every single dish on the table. But as he ate, he noticed that Alicia was just eating plain soup and green vegetables. She hadn’t touched any of the heavy dishes on the table except the vegetables and her fruit juice.

"Alicia, why are you not eating anything else except that?"

Alicia glanced at him and answered calmly.

"I am on a diet, so I am avoiding eating any spicy or heavy stuff."

Alden looked at her, feeling surprised and conflicted.

’If she is on a diet, then why did she make that much food? And out of anyone else, why me? Why work so hard for an unknown guy like me? I don’t even remember the past Alden ever meeting her from his memories...’

As Alden was in deep confusion about why she was acting weird somehow, he decided to ask her directly instead of confusing or misleading his own thoughts.

"Alicia... may I ask, why did you suddenly invite me for dinner? I don’t remember us ever meeting before, and we are not yet familiar with each other, are we?"

As Alicia picked up her food elegantly and was about to eat, she heard Alden’s sudden question. Her expression didn’t change. She ate the food from her fork and then spoke after swallowing the bite.

"Let’s talk about the rest of the stuff after dinner."

She continued her dinner without glancing at him.

Alden didn’t ask her anything else. He knew it was useless to force her to answer questions, especially since he didn’t really know her actual attitude. Sometimes she acted like a cold, untouchable, distant girl, which felt completely out of place. Sometimes she actually acted like a kind girl hiding behind an icy mask. And sometimes she acted like a mysterious, curious figure who secretly cast glances at him.

Whatever it was, Alden couldn’t help but remain cautious. He didn’t know what kind of trouble she was going to bring him. He knew that until this day finally ended, he would definitely face some more problems. If that turned out to be true, then this day would be marked as his most cursed day in this new world.

Alden then focused fully on digging into the food as time passed by.

Fifteen minutes later, the dinner was over. Alden sat on the soft couch in her room. It was quite squishy and comfortable. He could practically just fall asleep if he lay down right now. He was already tired from the day’s events and had just eaten a massive amount of food.

But he forced himself to calm down as he straightened his back.

Alicia walked back to the kitchen and started washing the large amount of dirty dishes.

Alden felt guilty about making her work so much. She had already worked hard to make the dinner for him, and now she was washing the dishes too.

He stood up, walked toward the kitchen, and spoke softly.

"Alicia, if you don’t mind, let me do the dishes. You worked so hard to make the dinner, so let me clean up."

Alicia glanced at him and said calmly with a composed demeanor.

"No, you should rest. It’s okay, I will do this stuff."

Alden didn’t back down at her refusal. He walked right up to the washbasin.

"No, you made such a tasty dinner. I shouldn’t make you work harder. At least let me do the dishes."

"No, it’s alright, I can do—"

"No, just keep your mouth shut and let me do it."

He pulled the plate from her hand, took the scrub, and started washing the dishes himself.

"You look more tired than me. You must have gone to the training grounds after the classes and then made all this dinner. You deserve a rest, so please let me handle it. You should go and sit outside."

Alicia folded her arms and looked at his stubborn attitude. She did not protest anymore. She walked toward the hanger, pulled out another apron, walked back toward him, and said, "Here, wear this before working."

Alden glanced at her hand. A pink apron with a cute cartoon teddy bear picture lay there. He looked at her as his face suddenly warmed up.

"Wait, is it necessary to wear that? I can wash the dishes without wearing this..."

Alicia looked at him and said strictly. "No, you have to wear this. Your clothes might get wet if you do not wear it. And if you don’t want to wear this, then let me do the dishes."

Alden looked a little bit flustered. He tried to compose himself, took the apron from her hand, and put it on.

She helped him tie the knot on the back as she stepped away. Her eyes sparkled for some reason as she looked at him. Her expression was completely emotionless. But her eyes told a different story. Alden couldn’t meet her eyes, completely unaware of her hidden mischief.

Alden moved to start washing the dishes.

"You should go now and rest," Alden suggested to her, not wanting to feel more embarrassed if she stood right beside him in a pink teddy bear apron.

But Alicia dismissed his words. She stood right beside him, drying the wet dishes with a cloth as he washed them.

"No, I will help you with drying. I promise I will keep my mouth shut."

Alden stopped for a second as he glanced at her drying the dishes.

’Damn, I just told her to keep her mouth shut hastily. I didn’t know she would really take it seriously. Shit, I shouldn’t have said that. What if she feels like I am some kind of arrogant guy who wants to keep women’s mouths shut with force... No, she wouldn’t think that. What am I even thinking? Why would she think that?’

’Ugh!... It seems my brain cells are dead. I am starting to overthink stuff. Let’s just focus on washing the dishes. It is quite embarrassing to stay beside her like this...’

’It is the fault of myself, who never had a girlfriend in my past life and was a complete loner... Sigh...’

He focused on washing the dishes, dismissing his overloaded thoughts.

*Clatter!* *Clatter!*

The kitchen was filled with the noise of washing dishes. It took a while before all the plates and bowls were done.

The first thing Alden did was take off the apron. He pulled it off and put it back on the hanger.

For some reason, he felt like Alicia looked a little disappointed after he took it off. But he dismissed his thought, assuming it was just his imagination since she wore the same expressionless face.

They walked out of the kitchen. Alden sat back on the couch, preparing for the main event to happen. He desperately wanted to know why she had suddenly asked him for dinner.

As he straightened his back, Alicia walked out of the kitchen after brewing some tea for them.

She set the teapot on the tea table, poured the warm tea into a cup, and offered it to him.

Alden took the cup and started drinking it.

Alicia then opened her mouth and spoke.

"You look good today..."

*Cough!* *Cough!*

Alden suddenly choked. He almost spilled the hot tea as he forcefully swallowed. He was shocked by her sudden words. His face turned red instantly. He tried to hide it, but it was useless.

Alicia sat calmly with a composed demeanor as she continued.

"I mean to say, your health looks well today. Your body does not look as frail as before..."

Alden felt more embarrassed about misinterpreting her words. He composed himself and answered.

"I think it is because of the food you made. It was genuinely so tasty, and I seem to have eaten like a glutton. I don’t think I even have to eat anything for a week."

Alicia’s eyes sparkled at his words. She drank her tea gracefully as she crossed one leg over the other.

"Thank you for the compliment, but it was nothing."

She sipped her tea. She then put her teacup down on the table, straightened her posture, looked directly at him, and said.

"So, about your question regarding why I called you here, it is quite simple. The reason I called you is because I wanted to tell you that..."

"I like you—"
