Chapter 101: The obserian forest

"I was sent by the Queen Mother to guide you on your journey." Trevor turned to see a dwarf looking up at him. freēwēbnovel.com

Trevor’s face remained calm and still.

The dwarf, already sensing that Trevor had not truly accepted him, immediately dropped to his knees.

"Please, you have to accept me. If the Queen Mother hears that I was rejected by you, she would be very disappointed in me. Please, just allow me to help you," the dwarf said calmly, without lifting his gaze to Trevor. His head was bowed low, as though he were silently praying that Trevor would not cast him away.

Trevor glanced back at the dwarf, a flicker of something like awe passing through his eyes. He took a deep breath before finally beginning to move.

Given the way the dwarf carried himself, Trevor couldn’t bring himself to explain that he was not truly ready to travel with anyone.

But then again, he didn’t really have the luxury of standing beside a three-hundred-year-old dwarf who behaved like a child, trying to explain himself at length. Trevor simply left. He genuinely did not have the time.

But even before he could take a full step, he felt something grab hold of his leg.

*Oh crap,* Trevor thought calmly to himself. He had known, without a shadow of a doubt, that the dwarf would grab his leg.

*What on earth was it with dwarfs and legs? It was as though they simply loved doing it, for reasons he could never quite figure out.*

With a loud sigh, Trevor finally relented and allowed the dwarf to follow him.

But unlike the other dwarfs he had met in the village, this one did not celebrate. Perhaps it already had some sense of what Trevor liked and what he didn’t.

The dwarf simply nodded with a quiet, grateful smile.

Trevor finally took a proper look at the map.

The first primordial tower was located deep in the middle of the Obsarian Forest.

On its own, that wouldn’t have seemed like much of a problem — except for the fact that the forest was known to be teeming with monsters, and if one was not careful, they might even stumble across a champion-ranked creature, which would obviously spell doom.

Trevor was genuinely impressed by how intricate the map was. He could draw meaning from it with just a single glance. On the map, the forest had various creatures sketched across it, each with a rank attached, and the highest among them was a champion-ranked beast. That was why Trevor had immediately predicted that the most dangerous creature in the forest would be a champion-ranked awakened creature.

But then again, he could always be wrong. There was truly no one on earth who could be a hundred percent certain of anything in this world.

There was a shorter route marked on the map that passed through a settlement, but that path would ultimately take far longer. And this was a battle against time, not a matter of comfort. So without hesitation, he turned and headed straight toward the forest.

The dwarf followed immediately and without a word, his head still slightly bowed as he quietly tried to think of something to say to lighten the mood.

Because, to his credit, he was not foolish. It was plainly obvious that Trevor was not particularly interested in him.

They had already walked more than two kilometres, and Trevor had not glanced at him even once.

It was more than clear that Trevor was indifferent to his presence.

As far as Trevor was concerned, it was as though he were making the journey entirely alone.

"Well, the Obsarian Forest has a really high—"

"Shut your mouth. I’m trying to concentrate." Trevor cut him off immediately. He was already attempting to slip his way into the forest as carefully and quietly as possible.

The dwarf raised his head and immediately understood. They were already at the boundary of the forest, and Trevor was moving with every ounce of caution he could muster.

But almost at that very moment, the dwarf noticed something was wrong.

Dwarfs were blessed with heightened senses and frightening speed, so it came as no surprise that the dwarf caught sight of a creature darting past Trevor’s back in a blur.

Trevor, who was completely oblivious, was still focused on clearing leaves from his path into the forest.

The dwarf wanted to call out a warning, but it was already too late.

With no second thought, the dwarf bolted toward the position he calculated to be the creature’s next point of attack, thrusting his hands up in a desperate attempt to at least absorb the blow.

*Whippp.* ƒreewebɳovel.com

Trevor spun around instantly at the sound, but it was already over.

The dwarf lay on the ground, his entire left hand severed at the wrist, bleeding out rapidly onto the forest floor.

Trevor’s face went pale. He turned sharply and began scanning the tree line, straining with every effort to catch sight of whoever had delivered the blow. But there was nothing. The whole thing had happened so fast he hadn’t been able to register a single thing.

Almost immediately, he equipped the werewolf card. His Lust Essence was at 6,000 now, so he could afford to play the waiting game.

But deep down, he already knew the truth — the werewolf card wouldn’t be enough. Whatever had done this was both fast and powerful enough to strike with such ferocity that he hadn’t even detected it.

Alex landed squarely inside the same hole he had watched Trevor materialize from.

He had spent the last few hours trying to make sense of what exactly was happening inside the dungeon. He couldn’t afford to sprint off blindly into unknown territory, so he had done his best to at least get a read on his surroundings before deciding where to go — or not go.

Then, all of a sudden, Trevor had materialized beside a hole out of thin air, carrying something that looked like a map, with a dwarf trailing close behind him.

Alex had no doubt in his mind. That hole was a necessary step.

He jumped straight in.

But unlike Trevor, Alex knew exactly what he was diving into, so he braced himself and angled his body in a way that stripped most of the impact from his landing.

The moment he touched down, the members of the community immediately grew wary of him.

They had only just dealt with the Breeder not long ago, and the last thing they needed was another monster walking through the same entrance.

"We should have sealed this thing up by now, but our elders didn’t heed the warnings. Now look at how we are suffering the consequences. Who knows if this one is also after the village?"

The war dwarfs moved to the front, their advanced technology at the ready — though they already knew the quiet, bitter truth: no technology on earth could truly match the power of magic.

"Hey, hey, hey — calm down, all of you. My teammate is actually the one who fell through that hole earlier. He sent me to come and meet you. He said you’d give me something," Alex said lightly, doing his best to ease the tension and extract whatever it was Trevor had originally come to collect.

"Did he tell you exactly what he wanted us to give you?" the old dwarf asked evenly, his tone measured and cautious.

"No, he only said it was very important and that I should do my best to get it," Alex replied, pressing his fingers to his chin and doing his best to project the air of someone deep in careful thought.

Alex was not foolish. He had already pieced together the full picture before he had even set foot in that hole.

The plan was simple — almost laughably so.

If what the dwarf had given Trevor was truly the map, then all Alex had to do was head straight to the third primordial tower and wait.

Once Trevor had successfully cleared the first two towers and moved on to the third, he would find Alex already there. By that point, Trevor would have already done the bulk of the work — and the moment he came into sight, Alex would finish it.

Just like that, Alex would be transmigrated to the true destination, while Trevor could very well end up at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for all he cared.

But first, he would have to actually get the item from these wretched elders.
