Chapter 94: Have You Thought About My Proposition?

The last time Michael cried was when he was ten years old. That was when he first found out about his father’s affair and the existence of his half-brother. When that happened, he cried very hard about it. In the years that followed, he never cried again. He thought that he had forgotten how to cry. However, he found himself unable to control his emotions at this moment. He did not want to remain sober right now. If he did, he would be haunted by the thoughts of Wendy and Christian together.

He got back up on his feet, found his phone, and gave Mr. York a call. He instructed him, "Send some alcohol to my place."

Before he even hung up, his doorbell rang. When the door opened, Mr. York saw how wasted Michael looked and felt terrible about it.

"Why are you just standing there? Go and get me some alcohol," said Michael as he gave Mr. York a light shove.

The truth was that Mr. York had been standing guard outside the door ever since Michael returned to the apartment last night. The version of Michael he had witnessed at the hospital was just too terrifying to leave alone.

He had never seen his boss like that. Instead of obeying Michael’s instructions, Mr. York forced his way into the apartment. He saw the broken bottles and cigarette butts everywhere. Sighing, he said, "Mr. Lucas, why are you torturing yourself like this? We located Mrs. Lucas long ago, and if you wish, we can go and get her right now."

"You want to go and get her?" Michael could not even walk in a straight line. Smiling bitterly, he said, "What’s the point of that? Didn’t you see how she insisted on leaving with Christian yesterday? She told me to just kill her if I wanted her to come with me. What do you want me to do? Should I really kill her?" He reached his arms up and pounded his own head. Right now, he hated himself more than anything, for being so soft and weak.

Then, pointing at himself, Michael continued in a mocking tone, "I am the president of MC Enterprise, but my wife still made me a cuckold and tried to threaten me into getting divorced. Despite that, I still couldn’t bring myself to lay a finger on her. I could only watch her leave with Christian."

"Mr. Lucas, perhaps the child that Mrs. Lucas is carrying..." Mr. York wanted to tell Michael that Wendy just might be telling the truth about the pregnancy. However, the words got stuck at the back of his throat. He decided that it would be better to avoid commenting on a situation that he was still not certain about.

"I asked you to get me some alcohol, why are you still here?!" roared Michael in an impatient tone, frowning.

"You shouldn’t drink anymore," said Mr. York as he looked around the apartment again. There were at ten empty bottles. He believed that Michael would wind up with alcohol poisoning if he continued drinking at this rate.

"Are you telling me what to do? Who do you think you are?" Pointing at Mr. York, Michael yelled, "Go and get me alcohol right now if you have any hope of keeping your job. If not, you can get out of here!"

Mr. York sighed. However, he did not have the courage to continue resisting Michael’s instructions.

"He cannot tell you what to do, but I can, right?" At that moment, Mrs. Lucas came walking into the apartment slowly, leaning heavily on her walking stick. The truth was that Mr. York had called her to inform her about the situation before Michael even opened the door for him.

When Michael saw his grandmother, he lost control of his emotions. He walked straight into her embrace. "Grandmother..." he said. Then, he started sobbing quietly.

Mrs. Lucas reached out to pat Michael’s back. Sighing, she comforted him, "There, there, don’t be upset anymore. Since she has already decided to leave, you should just let her go completely. You used to hate her so much, now that she’s finally gone, your wish has come true."

These words were merely to make Michael feel better. Even Mrs. Lucas could tell that her grandson had genuinely fallen deeply and irrevocably in love with Wendy.

"I don’t want her to go..." Michael confessed in a whisper, "I really don’t want her to go."

"Then, do you want to go and get her back?" asked Mrs. Lucas.

Of course, Michael wanted to do that. However, he was afraid that Wendy would once again tell him that she preferred dying over being with him. Even though he knew where exactly Christian and Wendy were hiding, he could only stay in his house like a scared animal. He did not have the courage to go after them.

This feeling was on the verge of driving him insane.

...

Wendy had stayed in the motel for a week. She rarely left the room, as she was terrified that Michael would find her the moment that she did.

On top of that, out of concern for her baby, she was following the doctor’s instructions to recuperate in bed for at least one week very closely. She reached out to touch her belly and noticed that she did feel significantly better.

Bowing her head, she gazed gently at her belly. She said, "Baby, you must remain strong and healthy for me."

"Wendy..." Christian entered the room at this same moment. He saw the smile on Wendy’s face, but his heart felt heavier. He said, "Have you thought about my proposition?"

Wendy knew what Christian was referring to.

Pursing her lips, she kept her head bowed as though she was deep in thought.

Christian continued speaking, "If we continue staying here, my brother will find us eventually. That doesn’t matter to me because I have to go back and face him sooner or later, but it’s different for you. If you go back, your child will..."

He purposely stopped halfway, but his meaning

was obvious to anyone who was listening.

Wendy subconsciously tightened her grip around her belly. She looked up and met Christian’s eyes. He always had an easygoing demeanor, as if nothing mattered to him.

However, his eyes were very revealing of his personality. Beneath the breezy persona that he had carefully crafted, there was always something dark and sinister in his gaze.

Wendy was not stupid. She had thought about many things over the past few days after calming down. Before this, she had already suspected that Christian was responsible for tampering with her medical report. But now, she was 99% sure that he was the mastermind behind everything.

Nothing in this world could possibly be so coincidental. It was strange that he showed up right when Michael tried to force her into an abortion. On top of that, Christian had plenty of motives. But she had no choice at that point but to leave the hospital with him. If she had not done that, her baby would not be alive right now.

Now that that was over for now, Wendy had to think carefully about the best way forward for herself and her baby.

"Now that I’m much better, I don’t need your help anymore," Wendy rejected him, "I’ll decide for myself what my next move should be."

Wendy still planned on leaving Lake City and finding a quiet place to settle down.

Christian was not surprised at all by this response. He knew that if Wendy had wanted to go abroad, she would have approached him for help a long time ago. There was no point waiting until today. His eyes darkened, but the same indifferent smile remained on his face. He said, "Wendy, you ought to think this through carefully. If you stay in this country, it’s only a matter of time before Michael finds you."

"I know, but I have no reason to accept your help," said Wendy. Even though she suspected Christian of being the mastermind behind this incident, she was still in hiding with him right now and she could not afford to fall out with him on the spot. Otherwise, he might very well harm her child. After all, he was the only person who knew for sure that this baby belonged to Michael.

Wendy continued, saying, "I’m thankful that you saved me this time, but I no longer wish to come between you and Michael. I think that you should understand this."

When Christian heard her, he smiled and said, "Of course l understand you. You never wanted anything to do with me. But, Wendy, I hope you know that I sincerely wish to help you. I understand Michael too well and I know that there’s no way he will let you get away so easily. On top of that, he thinks that you and I are in a relationship, and it’s hard to convince him otherwise. So, the best solution for you would be to go abroad. It would be harder for my brother to reach you if you do."

"Let me think about it again," said Wendy. She was afraid that Christian might do something to harm her baby if she rejected him again.

Right now, she just wanted to buy time. She was almost completely recovered anyway. She intended to find an opportunity to leave this place without anyone knowing.

Christian could only nod at Wendy’s response. freёweɓnovel.com

As he turned around, the expression on his face grew increasingly sinister. However, his voice rang out, "Wendy, I’ll go fetch your pills." He returned shortly after as promised with the pills in his hands. He said, "Here, take them."

Wendy stared at the pills in Christian’s hand with a slight frown. She looked around her but did not see the doctor who had been tending to her. He was the one who had been delivering her pills to her the past few days. Wendy did not dare to take the pills that Christian was offering.

"Where is the doctor?" she asked. "I saw him just yesterday."

"He left in the morning," Christian explained, "He said that you have no need for him anymore since you’re feeling much better. " Then, as though he was afraid that Wendy might get suspicious, he added, "He prepared these pills for you before leaving."

Things might have been better if Christian did not try and explain himself. The moment he did, Wendy grew even more suspicious. He had been trying to convince her to go abroad so that she would not be able to reconcile with Michael.

After all, the child that she was carrying was the biggest link between her and Michael. And if she was right about Christian being the mastermind behind the tampering of her medical reports, then it was clear that he did not want her to keep the child. She also found it strange that the doctor would leave so suddenly.

Lowering her head, Wendy said calmly, "Why didn’t he let me know before leaving? He has been taking good care of me for the past few days, and I haven’t had the chance to thank him yet."

"He probably works for my brother, Wendy. There’s no need to thank him," said Christian.

He deliberately emphasized the first half of his sentence to remind Wendy about her hatred toward Michael.

"What time did he leave?" Wendy did not take the pills from Christian. She continued asking him, "Right, do you have his contact number? I’d still like to thank him personally."

Christian saw nothing alarming in her expression. However, it was obvious that Wendy was trying her best to distract him and avoid taking the pills that he was offering. He now suspected that she was already on her guard against him.

He tried to offer her the pills again. "Take these pills first, Wendy, well talk after."

Wendy looked up, locking eyes with Christian. Even though she had successfully escaped from Michael, she was now stuck with Christian, who was not any easier to deal with. However, she knew that Christian would sense something amiss if she continued to refuse those pills from him. Pursing her lips, she offered her hand for the pills.

Right when Christian flipped his hand to drop the pills into her open palm, she deliberately retracted her hand. The pills landed all over the floor. Christian’s expression grew solemn as he stared at the ground.

"I’m sorry, my hand trembled..." Wendy bit down on her bottom lip. With an apologetic look on her face, she continued, saying, "I think we can just forget about it. I’ve taken so many pills the past few days, and my baby and I are both fine now. There’s no need for more."

Christian was certain that Wendy had done it on purpose. His hands curled into fists. "Alright, we’ll do as you say. But you must be sure to let me know the moment you feel any discomfort," he said caringly.

Wendy nodded, "I will..."

Suddenly, she sneezed several times and continued saying in an apologetic tone, "I’m feeling slightly sleepy. I get tired easily now that I’m pregnant. Why don’t you leave me for now and let me take a nap?"

It was clear that she wanted him out of the room.

Now, it would be awkward and difficult for Christian to stay where he was. He turned around and left.

However, the moment he left the room, he whipped out his phone and made a call, "You can come over right now, and make it fast. Wendy might run away soon."

After hanging up, an evil smile appeared on his face. He muttered, "Wendy, you might be smart, but I’m smarter. Don’t blame me for this. You were the one who rejected my offer to send you abroad, and you refused to take those pills. Since that’s the case, I can only resort to other means."
