Chapter 713: May Both Mother and Baby Be Safe
Leah was all smiles when she came back from school the next day. "Mommy, Mommy, Mark isn’t transferring away anymore! His mother also invited me to their house this weekend."
Wendy smiled when she heard what her daughter said.
She reached out and touched her daughter’s cheek. "I’ll take you shopping, so you can give Mark a small present. How about that?"
"That sounds great!" Leah clapped her hands happily.
Meanwhile, Jake had a sullen expression on his face.
He was feeling conflicted.
He did not want other boys to be close to Leah. On the other hand, he also wanted Leah to be happy.
For the past few days, Leah had been unhappy because of Mark.
Wendy knew what Jake was thinking.
She went over to Jake and patted his head. "Are you unhappy, Jake?"
Jake hesitated for a while before shaking his head. Then, he smiled and looked at his mother. "I’m happy as long as you and Leah are happy."
Wendy knew Jake was an intelligent boy. She did not have to lecture him.
Wendy had seen Mark before, and she knew that he was a good boy. She believed that Jake would eventually become friends with Mark too.
The next two months passed in the blink of an eye.
It was only seven days before Wendy’s projected delivery date.
Michael had been working extra hard for the past few days so that he could spend more time with Wendy later.
In the MC Enterprise office, Michael said to Milo, "Wendy is expected to deliver in seven days. You’ll have to hold the press conference of the terminal disease charity fund in the next two days. If you can’t make time for it, you and Yonina will have to handle the press conference yourselves. I won’t be free because I’ll have to be with Wendy."
"Don’t worry. I’ll make the necessary arrangements," Milo said confidently while thumping his chest.
It had been three months since they set up the charity fund, and Milo had been keeping up with how it developed.
Now that the charity fund had a basic organizational structure, it was time to hold a press conference.
After getting the serious talk out of the way, Michael glanced at Milo and Yonina and smiled. "How are things going between you two?"
Michael had heard that they had become closer to each other recently because Yonina always told Wendy about her relationship with Milo.
Yonina blushed and lowered her head. Somehow, she seemed embarrassed.
Milo, on the other hand, was more composed. He wrapped his arm over Yonina’s shoulders and said, "You can wait for the invitation to our wedding."
"Nothing is set in stone yet, and you’re already talking about the wedding?" Yonina laughed and playfully shoved Milo away.
"It’ll eventually happen, won’t it?" Milo hugged Yonina’s shoulders so that she could not push him away. frёeωebɳovel.com
Michael could not help but chuckle when he saw the couple flirting with each other.
The press conference was three days later.
After the press conference, Michael would reduce his workload so he could spend more time with Wendy.
That morning, Michael and Wendy went to the venue of the press conference together.
Her stomach was already big. She had to support it with her hands when she walked.
Every pair of eyes in the venue fell on the couple as they walked on the stage.
The event was live-streamed. The comment section became lively whenever the camera pointed at the couple.
[Ahh! Ahh! Mr. Lucas is the perfect man!]
[Wendy is also the perfect woman, and they’re the perfect match. I’m so, so, so envious!]
[Wendy’s stomach is already so big. Is she delivering any time soon?]
[It’s the press conference of the charity fund today. Can’t you focus on this good work instead?]
[Yes, we’re paying attention. Mr. and Mrs. Lucas have always been involved in charity. The charity fund is indeed a blessing for those with terminal illnesses.]
[I’m worried about Wendy. With a stomach that big, she should be resting at home.]
...
Michael stood on the stage. He held the microphone in one hand and supported Wendy with his other hand.
He smiled as he looked at the audience, saying, "A very good day to all of you. I am Michael Lucas, and I would like to thank everyone for attending this press conference.
"This charitable trust was set up three months ago. Donations have been pouring in from many generous individuals and corporations. We’ve raised a total of 1.6 billion dollars.
"We will not touch a single cent from this trust fund. It is currently managed by a professional team of managers, and we welcome anyone to check our accounts. We hope that everyone will continue to donate generously.
"I am not the biggest contributor to the trust fund. This honor belongs to Mr. Milo Lawrence. Let’s hear it from him."
Seeing that Michael had shifted the limelight to him, Milo took over the microphone and smiled. "Good day to you. I am Milo Lawrence. You flatter me, Mr. Lucas, what I did was nothing compared to your five-hundred-million-dollar donation to the fund.
"I have been keeping a close eye on the funds, and we record every single donation we receive. We’ll be putting up a link on Twitter. All donation amounts will be published.
"Of course, the names of the donors will only be published with their consent. We will not publish the names of anyone who wishes to remain anonymous, only the amount donated will be released.
"Currently, the top donor is Mr. Michael Lucas with a total of five hundred million dollars. He was also the first one to contribute to the fund. Next is Ms. Yonina Collins of Collins Group with a donation of two hundred million dollars."
While Milo was giving his speech, Michael noticed that Wendy was acting strange.
Wendy was gripping his arm, and her grip was tightening.
"What’s wrong, Wendy?" Michael whispered.
Wendy had been feeling unwell ever since she stepped onto the stage, but she did not want to interrupt the press conference. She thought she would be able to hold it in until the press conference was over. But now, she could no longer tolerate the discomfort.
Wendy leaned on Michael. Tiny beads of sweat formed on her forehead. "Michael, I think... I think I’m going into labor."
"Now?" Michael was shocked. He no longer cared about the press conference. He lifted Wendy in his arms and ran down the stage. "Mr. York! Start the car!"
He then remembered that the attending physician of the hospital was still on the stage. Michael turned around and shouted towards Milo, "Let’s go! To the hospital!"
Milo was shocked. He had not yet processed what had happened. He was not an obstetrician. What was the point of him going to the hospital? But before he knew it, he was already running along with Michael.
Only Yonina was left on the stage. She was stunned.
’What... what should I do? Should I go along? If I did, there won’t be anyone hosting the press conference!’
Left with no other choice, she remained at where she was to continue with the press conference. But no one paid any attention to Yonina. Everyone was focused on Wendy. Even the reporters were preparing to go to the hospital. Yonina saw that there was no longer a need for her to hold the fort, so she went to the hospital as well.
Meanwhile, viewers of the livestream were flooding the comments section.
"Is she really going into labor now?"
"Ahh! I’m so excited! Why am I so excited?"
"May both mother and baby be safe!"
...
Half an hour later, Michael’s grandmother, Zess, and the two children came to the hospital. Mary was still on her way. After all, Linton was quite far away.
Michael’s grandmother asked worriedly, "Isn’t she four days away from the expected delivery date?"
"She’s gone into labor," Michael said as he looked at Milo unhappily. "Can’t your doctors make a better prediction?"
Milo felt aggrieved. "It’s just a prediction, and it’s not necessarily accurate. Even the best doctor in the world can’t guarantee that the expected delivery date is accurate."
"The doctors of your hospital did a bad job!" Michael said aggressively.
"Fine, fine. Our doctors did a bad job." Milo did not know how else he should explain it to Michael. All he could do now was to appease him.
A doctor came out of the room. When he saw Michael, he said, "Mr. Lucas, I need your signature."
"Why?" Michael boomed. His voice was a lot louder when he was surprised. "What’s happening to Wendy? No, I’m not signing it. If something happens to her, I’ll make sure that no one in the hospital is spared."
"There’s nothing wrong with your wife," the doctor said. He was shocked by what Michael said. He tried to explain, "We’re just following standard procedures. There’s nothing wrong with your wife."
Michael signed on the form upon hearing the doctor’s explanation. He then emphasized, "Regardless of what happens, you must save my wife."
The doctor could see that Michael was extremely nervous. He said, "Don’t worry, Mr.
Lucas. Mrs. Lucas is fine. Nothing will happen to her."
"I’m not worried, I’m not worried at all..." Michael nodded hurriedly. He placed a hand on his chest to try to calm himself down. But he was actually extremely worried.
"No. I’d better go in and keep her company." Michael walked towards the delivery room as he spoke. The hospital allowed husbands to accompany their wives during labor. However, Wendy did not want Michael to accompany her. When she saw Michael, she grumbled, "Why are you here? Get out. I don’t want you to see me in this state. I look terrible..." Michael quickly grabbed Wendy’s hand, leaned over, and kissed her forehead.
"You’re not ugly at all. You’re the most beautiful woman in the world."
"You’re lying..." Wendy’s voice was weak. She did not have much energy left.
"Really. I swear that I’m not lying to you." Michael said.
"Just push a little more, Mrs. Lucas. Push the baby out at one go. I can already see the head," the midwife said.
Michael felt sorry for Wendy when he saw that her pale face was drenched in sweat and tears. He held Wendy’s hand tightly, wishing that he could take Wendy’s place instead.
Eventually, he could not hold back his tears. "Let’s stop right now. I don’t want you to go through this..."
"Mr. Lucas, you’re distracting us," the doctor said helplessly as he heard what Michael said.
Wendy wanted to burst out laughing when she heard Michael cry, but she held herself back. She had to focus all her energy on pushing the baby out.
She took in a deep breath and pushed with all her might. Finally, the baby was delivered safely. The doctor carried the baby to Michael, but he refused to look at the baby. He only had eyes for Wendy.
He did not hear what the doctor said either. His mind was preoccupied with the thought that he would not let Wendy go through the pain of childbirth again.
