Chapter 71: I’m Sorry, Wendy
"Wendy, do you think my brother will come over and stop us?" said Christian as he smiled faintly at the cameras while dancing with Wendy. He looked like an elegant and gentle young man.
Wendy ignored his question, because she knew that she had lost the moment she offered her hand to Christian. If Michael remained on the phone then, it meant that in his heart, Yvonne was more important than both her and Christian.
She thought, if Michael only hung up because he saw me dancing with Christian, it can only mean that I’m not significant to him in the first place.
After all, she had approached Michael twice but failed to make him hang up. Christian, on the other hand, could easily succeed just by asking her to dance with him. In Wendy’s eyes, this conclusion only proved her failure. She smiled at the cameras as well, except her smile was filled with bitterness and hidden fury. Memories of her past three months with Michael started replaying in her mind-memories of how good he had been to her, his smiles, and his warmth.
They were like beautiful but fleeting dreams. She could only blame herself for being too stupid and falling for the same man twice.
However, this was all the fight that she had left in her. frёewebηovel.cѳm
Michael’s gaze eventually landed on Wendy and Christian. When he saw them dancing together, his slightly narrowed eyes instantly grew cold.
He was still on the phone, but he started walking toward the dancing throng. Making his way through the crowd, he grabbed Wendy and pulled her away.
With an icy gaze, he exclaimed furiously, "Wendy Stewart!"
He was about to lose his temper, but Wendy merely greeted him with a superficial smile. She said, "Mr. Lucas, please pay attention to where we are." She was reminding him to be careful about his behavior.
Taking a deep breath, Michael had no choice but to suppress the fury that he felt. Since he was the host of this party, it would not be a good idea for him to ruin it.
"Let go of him," Michael whispered, but his voice was still filled with immense displeasure. Since he was holding Wendy’s hand, she had to let go of Christian. She did not come here because she wanted to dance with Christian.
Now that Michael was here with her, her goal had been achieved. However, this conclusion served merely as a proof of how pathetic Wendy was.
"I didn’t think that there was a need for you to come and entertain me since you are so busy," Wendy continued smiling, but her gaze was no longer loving, as it always was in the past whenever she looked at Michael.
"Wendy Stewart, all I did was speak on the phone with her. You don’t have to do this," said Michael.
"What did I do wrong?" Wendy shrugged. She was not afraid to speak up to the cameras. In fact, she smiled at the cameras while saying, "This is a party, after all. It’s perfectly normal for me to dance with Christian, your brother."
Indeed, this was a party. Since Michael had not taken the stage and announced Wendy’s identity to the public, the emcee decided to play some music to buy time. There were many people dancing around them, and right now, Christian and Wendy appeared to be nothing more than dance partners.
There was nothing wrong with this logic.
Michael was the only problem. He did not allow Wendy to have any kind of interaction with Christian, much less dance together at such a public event. However, since there were cameras surrounding them, Michael had no choice but to control his own emotions.
He inhaled deeply and forced himself to calm down. Taking Wendy’s hand, he gazed at Christian with a smile on his face and then started leading her toward the stage. He said, "You just want me to reveal your identity to the world, right? Fine, I’ll do as you wish."
Things would have been fine if Michael had remained silent. The moment he said those words, Wendy lost her temper. Flinging his hand away forcefully, she remained standing where she was.
Michael turned around and asked with a frown, "What are you doing in front of so many people?"
Wendy did not wish to cause a scene. However, she was no longer the same silly and weak woman who had loved him. She thought, Michael was the one who singlehandedly organized tonight’s party and promised me that he wanted to officially acknowledge my status as his wife so that this relationship would be fair to me. But why is he making it sound like I’m the one causing a scene now? It’s as if I’m the one who’s begging him for this. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com
"Michael, I no longer wish to be a pawn in the little game between you and Christian," said Wendy in a whisper. She did not wish to air their dirty laundry and negatively affect Michael’s reputation.
"You’re not just a pawn, you’re my wife," said Michael. He understood that the only reason why Wendy felt angry and jealous was because she genuinely cared about him. Suppressing his anger, he continued, "Since I organized tonight’s party for you, I will make sure that everyone knows who you are."
"Is that so?" When Wendy heard these words again, she no longer felt as moved and emotional as before. Instead, all that was left was indifference.
Observing Wendy’s response, Michael did not say anything else. He pulled her onto the stage. The staff on standby beside the stage swiftly handed him a microphone.
"I would like to thank everyone for being here tonight. I’ll cut the story short and get straight to the point-the reason for tonight’s party is because wanted to formally introduce my wife to all of you..." Before he finished speaking, a gut-wrenching scream from Yvonne came through the phone. He had not hung up on her yet. She had remained quiet while listening to his conversation with Wendy, but now, it was time for her to do something.
Michael lowered his head, looking at the pocket that his phone was in. He hesitated but did not take it out. He continued, "My wife and I have been married for over three years. Today, for the first time ever, I want to..."
"Michael, farewell!"
The phone was not on the loudspeaker, but Yvonne was so loud that Michael could hear her. In fact, so could Wendy. Seeing that Michael had paused instead of continuing, Wendy smiled faintly and said mockingly, "A human life is at stake. Why don’t you care about that anymore? If something really happens to her, you won’t have a clear conscience for the rest of your life."
Her tone made Michael feel very uncomfortable.
Yvonne had already hung up the call. However, the notification alert for a new text message was heard very soon. As Michael stood there without speaking or checking the text, Wendy reached out and grabbed his phone. It was a text with a picture attached. She opened it to see a photo meant to illustrate that Yvonne attempting suicide. The only thing in her photo was her arm with one single cut on it. The wound was still bleeding.
Wendy handed the phone to Michael and said, "If you don’t go right now, she might really die."
When Michael saw the photo, his expression changed drastically. Wendy’s attitude had made it clear that if he left right now, she would hold a grudge against him forever and live with the belief that he was still in love with Yvonne.
However, if he stayed here and something were to happen to Yvonne, he would not know how to live with himself for breaking his promise to the person who had sacrificed their lives for him.
The cameras continued flashing. In the end, Michael still chose Yvonne. He nodded slightly at Wendy, and in an apologetic tone said, "I’m sorry, Wendy, it’s my fault tonight. I promise to make it up to you in the future." With that, he turned around and left.
As she watched Michael’s familiar form walk away from her, Wendy felt as though her heart was being stabbed again and again. Did it hurt?
She had no answer to that because she had grown numb to the pain a long time ago. She could not believe that Michael had really left her on stage and turned his back to her.
Her eyes were moist as she swallowed dryly. Tilting her head back, she gazed at the ceiling.
She did not dare to lower her head, as she was afraid that her tears would fall uncontrollably.
Even at that moment, the cameras continued flashing. The reporters swarmed around the stage and overwhelmed her with their many questions.
"Miss Stewart, why did Mr. Lucas leave so abruptly?"
"This is the first time that Mr. Lucas has brought you to a public event. Didn’t he do that to announce who you are? Why did he leave?"
"I saw you take out Mr. Lucas’s phone from his pocket. Can you please tell us what you saw?"
"Does this have anything to do with Miss Yvonne Taylor?"
"Miss Yvonne Taylor has always been rumored to be Mr. Lucas’s girlfriend. In that case, what has been going on between you and Mr. Lucas for the past three years?"
The questions from the reporters only served as more stabs in Wendy’s already numb heart. In the past, she fantasized endlessly about showing up at public events with Michael, but she never expected that her first experience Would end like this.
Taking a deep breath, she smiled radiantly at the cameras, "Since Mr. Lucas is the one who organized tonight’s party, I think that everyone should direct their questions to him. Thank you very much." With that, she walked off the stage gracefully as if nothing had happened. Even though she had been defeated and felt that she had been trampled all over, she refused to allow herself to appear as weak and cowardly as she did before.
And even though she did not have the honor of being officially recognized as Mrs. Lucas, she would remain just as proud and dazzling.
Unfortunately, this was a huge scoop and the reporters refused to let her get away with it just like that. They surrounded her with even more questions this time.
"Miss Stewart, can you comment on the relationship between you, Mr. Lucas, and Miss Taylor?"
"It is rumored that Mr. Lucas has always been in love with Miss Taylor, and it was you who interfered in their relationship three years ago and stole him from her. Does that mean that you are the third party in their relationship?"
"Is the reason why Mr. Lucas suddenly changed his mind and left because he found out about your true self and decided to go to Miss Taylor instead?"
"Miss Stewart..."
Wendy’s forced smile faded completely. She wanted to squeeze through the crowd, but there were too many reporters swarming her and she could not get through them.
Michael had invited these reporters to the party tonight to witness Wendy officially become Mrs. Lucas. Now, however, they had become the biggest weapon against her.
"Leave me alone right now!" Wendy screamed with a terrifying disposition. Her eyes were slightly red and filled with rage. Sweeping her gaze across the group of reporters, she said coldly, "I will repeat myself again: if you have any questions, you can go straight to Michael Lucas. If you try to block my path again, there will be consequences!" Even though her volume was not too loud, her words were so intimidating that the reporters immediately shut up.
Seeing that the reporters had calmed down, Wendy pushed through them and quickly strode out of the venue. When the reporters finally came to their senses, they chased after her.
From their perspective, Wendy’s status did not mean much, even if she was married to Michael, because he had left her behind in front of so many people. Without Michael’s protection, she was nothing. Hence, these reporters were still willing to take the risk, of attempting to interview her.
Wendy quickened her pace when she looked behind to see the reporters chasing after her. Just when they were about to catch up, Christian stepped in and effectively blocked the path between them.
