Chapter 707: The Richest Family in The Country
It happened to be midday when Zen got there.
After exiting the car, she took her luggage and looked at the security guards standing at the entrance.
Just as she was about to tell him who she was, the security guard voluntarily walked over and gestured for her to come in as he said, "You must be Ms. Tanner, right?
This way, please."
Zen nodded politely and thanked the security guard.
Zen followed behind the security guard before she quickly saw Wendy coming out to welcome her.
"Zen..." Wendy strode over and gave her a big hug.
Zen hugged Wendy before letting go quickly.
Zen glanced at Wendy’s belly.
Wendy’s belly had gotten very big. Zen smiled as she asked, "You must be six or seven months pregnant, right?"
Wendy looked absolutely blissful as she touched her belly and nodded, "Uh huh. I’m already seven months pregnant."
"How time flies! In about two months, your baby will be born," Zen kept looking at Wendy’s belly.
Zen instinctively touched her belly before she quickly pulled her hands back.
"How are your injuries? Are you suffering from any problems?" asked Wendy with concern. "The medical standards in the country are very high these days. If you have any ailments, you have to come clean with me, okay?"
Zen shook her head and said, "I have already recovered fully. Considering the length of time I stayed in Rheinsville City, I recovered ages ago."
Wendy heaved a sigh of relief when she heard this. "That is perfect."
"Why are you standing around? Come on in and have your lunch," said Mrs. Lucas as she stood in the distance with her walking stick. "You can chat over lunch."
"Let’s eat first." Wendy held Zen’s hand and led her into the dining room.
Zen wanted to take the luggage but realized a servant had already beat her to it.
Zen could not help smiling as she said, "You sure live up to your name as the richest family in the country."
"I can show you around after lunch. The hibiscus and roses are blooming well in the backyard," said Wendy as she smiled. "There are a lot of other plants in there that I am sure you have never seen before either."
"Sure," Zen smiled as she nodded.
When Zen saw the huge spread on the dining table, she asked quizzically, "Did you invite anyone else for lunch?"
"Nope," said Wendy.
"Are we supposed to finish all this food alone?" Zen was genuinely caught by surprise.
The dining table was huge, and there were over a dozen dishes on the table. The food looked like they were from a Michelin-starred restaurant.
In any other family, the food was considered banquet quality.
"Granny said we have to whip up something special for you," Wendy smiled as she put some food in Zen’s bowl. "Try this. See if you like it."
"Don’t be shy. Eat up. If anything is not to your taste, the kitchen can get it redone," said Mrs. Lucas happily.
"It is okay. This is great." Zen hurriedly waved her hands and said, "All the food looks great. I am sure they are very yummy."
Zen lowered her head to dig in as Mrs. Lucas and Wendy showed great hospitality.
She had to admit the food was absolutely a delight.
Zen had just gotten off a long flight, so she was genuinely famished.
However, Zen suddenly thought about what happened in Rheinsville City as she ate lunch.
Christian kept forcing her to fight with dogs over chicken wings... Zen lowered her head so much that she almost buried her face in the bowl when she sensed tears trickling down the corner of her eye.
Before long, she composed herself, raised her head, and acted as though nothing had happened.
She smiled as she said, "This is delicious."
"Then, eat more," Wendy gave Zen more food.
...
The kitchen staff sent dessert out after they were done with their main course.
Zen was already very full, but she could not resist taking a couple of bites when she saw the exquisite dessert.
Zen reached her hands out and touched her bulging belly. She said with great satisfaction, "I am so full. I really can’t eat a single bite more."
"Why don’t you take a break?" asked Wendy. "Would you prefer to sit here or do you want to take a walk in the garden?"
"Let’s stay put for now. I am simply too full to move," said Zen as she smiled.
"Okay. In that case, let’s go watch the television in the living room," Wendy supported Mrs. Lucas as they walked Zen to the living room.
"Wendy, I do not get it. Why do you and your husband keep living outside when you have such a lovely family home?" Zen looked around the living room and said, "If it were me, I would never want to leave a house like this."
In the past, no one else liked Wendy other than Mrs. Lucas, so she barely came over.
Michael did not like living here when Anthony was still around.
Moreover, the mansion was such a long commute to work.
Wendy planned on moving back in with the children now.
Mrs. Lucas was getting old, and her eldest son had passed away. None of her other surviving sons lived at the mansion, and her eldest daughter-in-law was legally insane.
Mrs. Lucas was bound to feel lonely living at the mansion.
Wendy smiled as she said, "That’s right. I like the place too, so I plan on moving back from now on."
Mrs. Lucas knew Wendy was just worried about her. Just as Mrs. Lucas was about to say something, the news aired on the television.
A news flash came in, and it was about the bust of the largest drug trafficking syndicate in the world with Alberto and Christian at the helm. Alberto and Christian were executed four days ago.
The smile on Zen’s face promptly disappeared when they heard the news.
Wendy also detected a change in Zen’s mood, so she immediately told the servant to turn off the television.
"Zen..." The moment Wendy called her name, Zen only smiled and said, "Let’s go to the garden for a walk. Didn’t you say that all the flowers are blooming? Why don’t you show me around?"
"Of course. Let’s go for a walk in the garden," Wendy stood up with her hand supporting her back.
Zen walked over and helped to support Wendy.
"Make yourselves at home. I am going to have a nap." Mrs. Lucas knew they wanted to chat privately, so she made herself scarce.
"Okay." Wendy nodded before heading to the garden with Zen. freewebnovёl.ƈom
The garden was huge and filled with all kinds of flowers.
Zen and Wendy strolled in the backyard before Zen smiled and said, "Are you sure this is your backyard and not the national park?"
Wendy smiled as she said, "The first time I visited the mansion, I was shocked by how huge it was as well. I did not expect anyone’s garden to be bigger than a park.
Back in the day, I did not think I was a part of the family, so I only came back a couple of times a year."
"Even though it took a long time, you and Michael can finally be together," said Zen as she held Wendy’s hand. Her face gradually turned mild as she said from the bottom of her heart, "I hope the two of you will stay together forever."
"Thank you." Although Wendy was smiling on the surface, she was sighing in her heart. "Then, what about you? What do you plan on doing now?"
It was the first time Wendy asked Zen this question ever since Zen arrived.
Initially, they were both deliberately avoiding this difficult subject.
However, it was useless to run, and they had to face it sooner or later.
Zen kept her head lowered, so Wendy said, "Why don’t you come over to MC Enterprise? We need talented designers like you. Or do you want to start your own brand? I can always invest in it."
Zen shook her head. She raised her hands as she said, "I can’t draw with these hands anymore."
...
Zen kept getting tortured by Christian during her time in Rheinsville City.
She nearly died at his hands several times.
Other than her hands, there was something different about her gait at close inspection.
Wendy had already noticed it. She looked down slightly at Zen’s hands.
She reached out her hands and pulled Zen’s hand.
Zen’s small hands felt soft and nice to hold.
Wendy rubbed Zen’s hand gently as she spoke solemnly, "Is there really no way to save your hands? If you were unable to treat them in Rheinsville City, you could always try your luck locally. Let me take you to the hospital and get them checked out."
Zen smiled as she shook her head and said, "I will pass."
Zen paused briefly before she lowered her head and continued, "I don’t want to be a designer anymore. I just want to go home and be with my parents. They are getting old, so I have to take care of them. They have been so worried about me recently.
Now, all I want is to make up for it and stay with them so that I can take care of them."
The only people Zen cared about now were her parents.
In reality, she had considered suicide in the past.
She had nothing. She had lost her child, her career, and even the love of her life.
There was nothing left waiting for her.
However, Zen knew she could not act so selfishly every time she thought about her elderly parents.
She had to live. Even if she did not care about living, she had to think about her parents.
"Even if you have to go home, it does not mean you need to stop being a designer."
Wendy knew how passionate Zen felt about design. She also knew what Zen had sacrificed for her career all these years.
Wendy genuinely felt upset when she heard Zen was going to give up designing for good.
"I’m not going to do it anymore." Zen smiled as she shook her head. "I plan on being a teacher just like your mother. I want to be a good teacher."
"Then, what about your hands?" Wendy still wanted to convince Zen to get them examined and treated.
"I can still use my hands. Didn’t you see me eating with them earlier? I can hold the chopsticks just fine." Zen patted Wendy’s shoulders slightly hard. It seemed as though she was doing it in an attempt to convince Wendy how strong her hands were.
She continued, "I simply hurt my tendons. I can still write, but drawing needs more than a pair of steady hands, you know?"
"After you go home, we will no longer be able to see each other as often," said Wendy reluctantly.
Zen did not continue with the conversation.
Her hometown was not that far from Lake City.
If they wanted to see each other, it was not that hard.
However, Zen would probably avoid coming to Lake City.
Lake City was filled with bad memories for Zen. She came to Lake City to fulfill her ambitions. Also, it was the place she met Christian.
Now, she just wanted to forget about Lake City and have a fresh start.
"Then, when do you plan on going back?" asked Wendy.
"I am leaving immediately," replied Zen with a smile. "I came back to see you and say goodbye to you. God knows when we will ever see each other again."
"Can’t you spend a few days here first?" asked Wendy. "You can stay right here since we have plenty of rooms. If you want to sleep with me, it is fine by me..." Zen smiled as she shook her head. "No, thanks. I want to go back, Wendy."
The moment Zen finished her sentence, she felt like crying.
She inhaled deeply and suppressed the urge to cry.
She smiled even more brightly. "I already called my mother when I disembarked and told her I was coming home."
Since Zen had already told her mother about going home, Wendy did not insist on making her stay.
