Chapter 660: Competition Between Michael and Christian
"So, you mean Christian would think in the same way, and the direction he went was the same as the car?" Evan asked Michael.
Michael nodded and stood up, looked around at the surroundings, and pondered calmly for a while. Then, he said, "Let’s take four-fifths of our people to track this road with us, and the rest one-fifth can expand the search radius."
Even though Michael could guess Christian’s thoughts, he could not be one hundred percent sure.
He could let most people track this way, but he could not give up other areas.
What if Christian took the risk and brought Wendy and Zen to the crowded city area?
After all, Wendy was in danger, so Michael couldn’t take any chances.
Evan had no opposition and did according to what Michael arranged.
It was very dark in the forest at night; only the car light shone.
They drove along the trace for about half an hour before they found a fork in the road.
Very soon, someone came to report, "Captain, Mr. Lucas, there is a fork in the road in the front. One way leads to the deep forest, the other leads to the residential neighborhood at the border. There is a trace of the car on the way to the residential neighborhood. But there is no road anymore after two miles along the other way that leads to the deep forest. Which way should we track?"
Evan did not say anything but looked at Michael and let him make the decision.
Evan was the captain of the anti-drug department, but yet he was unfamiliar with Christian. So, it would be more reliable to ask Michael to make the decision at this moment rather than make it by himself.
"Four-fifths of the people track the way to the deep forest; the rest track the way to the residential neighborhood," said Michael calmly.
Generally speaking, it was more likely to go to the residential neighborhood.
After all, it was a problem to survive in the forest.
How could Christian survive if he took two women with him into the forest?
However, Evan trusted Michael’s judgment.
Michael looked at the darkness out of the window of the car.
He was not randomly guessing before he made this decision. He was thinking which way he would go if he were Christian.
The answer was to go the way that led to the deep forest.
Christian was a big drug dealer. It was very likely that he had expected a day like this, so he would have already prepared necessities for survival in the forest.
As long as he could hide there for several days and most of Michael’s men tracked the other ways, then he had an opportunity to escape and get out of there.
However, it was a pity that Christian’s thoughts were guessed by Michael.
"If there is no road in the forest, then it is harder to search," Michael turned around and looked at Evan. "How many available reconnaissance aircraft do you have now?"
"Only five are available, but they are all in the Rheinsville City now. I do not have time to transfer them to Nolvania." Evan sighed and said, "I will transfer them now, and it will take them about five hours to arrive here. I can also contact the anti-drug department of Nolvania and borrow some reconnaissance aircraft. But it will also take several hours."
"Then, please transfer as many as you can," said Michael. "It is highly possible that Christian is hiding in the forest."
The forest was not small, and even if they had reconnaissance aircraft, it would not be easy to find someone.
If Christian was well prepared in advance, he could hide in the forest for about ten days.
If Christian was not in the forest, Michael would miss the best time for tracking since he invested too many resources to search there.
This was a competition between Michael and Christian.
If Michael guessed correctly, then he could find Wendy very soon.
If he was wrong, then while most people were searching in the forest, Christian could take the opportunity to slip out of Nolvania. In that case, they would have to chase Christian all over the world, which would become very difficult.
...
In the deep forest, Wendy and Zen were lying on the bed. But neither of them fell asleep.
It was strange if they could fall asleep in this place at this moment.
It was very dark outside, the moonlight was very dim, and they could not see anything clearly.
But there were cries of animals from time to time.
Wendy could not tell what kind of animals were crying, but her mood was very heavy.
Zen asked in a low voice, "Wendy, what should we do? Should we just stay here doing nothing?"
"We should find some way to leave here." Wendy closed her eyes and said carefully though in a low voice, "Or we should find some way to get in touch with Michael."
"Michael?" Zen was confused. "Why should we contact Michael? He is a big drug dealer."
"The real big drug dealer is Christian," Wendy said. "Christian was not my husband at all, it was he who kidnapped me."
"Well... " Zen could not accept what she had just heard.
"We both lost memories, so we did not know what happened exactly. Zen, I just want to ask you if you trust me?" Wendy asked Zen.
Zen did not hesitate and said firmly, "Yes, I trust you."
"I have an idea. Maybe it can make Christian take us away from here and go to a place where there are lots of people," said Wendy. "As long as we are in a place where there are other people, the chance of looking for help is bigger. Here, even if Christian lets us go, we will certainly not survive and get out of the forest."
"What is your idea?" Zen could not help asking.
"Getting sick," said Wendy. "I think that getting sick is the only reason Christian will take us out of here. Doesn’t Christian care about me? As long as I get sick, he should take me to see a doctor."
"No, Wendy, you are pregnant. If you get sick, it may harm the baby. Absolutely not." Zen disagreed at once. "Let me do this. I can take a cold shower and will have a fever tomorrow morning."
"I can pretend to be sick. Christian and his assistant are not doctors. They may not be able to tell that I am pretending," Wendy had no other idea and, thus, thought about pretending to be sick.
She had to give it a try no matter if it worked or not.
"But... " Zen still wanted to say something, but Wendy interrupted her. "Do not hesitate; let’s give it a try tomorrow. If it does not work, we can think about other ways."
Zen sighed and nodded. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
It was getting darker and darker, and Wendy gradually fell asleep.
She did not fall fast asleep; she dared not fall fast asleep.
She heard someone called her name gently several times while she was half awake and half asleep.
Wendy made a sound subconsciously and then fell asleep again.
In her dream, she saw two kids - a boy and a girl.
The two kids were both very cute.
"Mummy... " The two kids rushed to hug her when they saw her.
Wendy could not help but smile when she saw them. She held out her arms and waited for them to hug her.
When she was about to hug the two kids, a man suddenly appeared.
The man was Christian.
He pulled Wendy away and locked her in his arms.
Wendy struggled vigorously.
While she was almost desperate and hopeless, another man appeared.
Wendy could not see clearly what the other man looked like, but she saw that he had risked his life to save her.
"Michael, Michael... " Subconsciously, Wendy called Michael’s name.
...
"Michael!" Wendy woke up from her dream and sat up on the bed abruptly.
When she opened her eyes and found herself in the room that she had arrived at last night, she silently sighed.
When she closed her eyes again, her mind was occupied by Michael.
The memories were so confusing that Wendy could not tell apart dreams from reality.
Then Wendy thought of the two cute kids.
She murmured in a low voice, "Leah? Jake?"
Wendy did not know why she would call out these two names.
Suddenly, she thought about the family relations of Michael that she had seen while she was searching for information about Michael on someone else’s phone.
Michael seemed to have a son and a daughter, and she was Michael’s wife.
Wendy touched her belly with her hands.
So, this was not the first time she was pregnant.
She already had a son and a daughter.
Thinking about this, Wendy’s look became gentler and softer.
The scenes regarding Jake and Leah became clearer and clearer in her mind.
Wendy wanted to recall more memories about them very much.
However, no matter how hard she tried, she could not recall everything in a short time.
"13266698... " Wendy suddenly thought of something and murmured this series of numbers.
What number is it?
Why did this number suddenly come to her mind?
"What is after this series of numbers?" Although Wendy could not remember what it was, she felt there was something after this series of numbers.
She knocked her head with her hands, trying very hard to remember this number.
Perhaps the complete series of numbers was something very important.
"What on earth is it?" While Wendy was trying very hard to recall, she heard Zen moaning painfully.
Wendy immediately turned around to check on Zen. She found that Zen’s face was pale, and she closed her eyes tightly.
"Zen, Zen," Wendy patted Zen on her shoulder.
Zen coughed and slowly woke up.
She was thirsty, and her throat was dry, which made her voice a little coarse, "Wendy."
"How are you?" Wendy touched Zen and felt that her temperature was very high.
While talking to Zen, Wendy put her hand on Zen’s forehead.
Wendy suddenly opened her eyes very wide and helped Zen sit up. She asked immediately, "Why is your temperature so high?"
Zen coughed and opened her mouth, trying to say something with difficulty.
Seeing this, Wendy got out of bed at once to get some water for Zen.
But except for the bed, there was only a table in the room with nothing else.
Wendy had to open the door, went outside, and got some hot water.
Wendy helped Zen drink the water and patted her gently on her back, "Are you feeling better now?"
Zen nodded.
Wendy suddenly recalled that someone seemed to be calling her name last night.
It seemed to be Zen.
But at that time, Wendy was asleep and could not remember clearly.
After that, she had been dreaming.
Wendy frowned and looked at Zen in her eyes. She asked angrily in a low voice, "Why did you get sick?"
"I... well... " Zen avoided looking at Wendy and said, "It was a little chilly last night, and I woke up to find myself like this. I guess I caught a cold."
Zen did not dare to look at Wendy’s eyes while talking.
Of course, Wendy did not believe her excuse.
"Zen, why did you do that?" Wendy sighed, feeling angry yet sorry for Zen. "I have told you that I can pretend to be sick; why did you really make yourself sick?"
