Chapter 653: Whose Number Was That?
"Mrs. Lucas, Mr. Lucas will soon be home," the maid said to Wendy respectfully. "He said that he’ll be accompanying you on your walk."
"Alright," Wendy said as she nodded.
After that, Wendy helped Zen to the living room. They sat down on the couch and waited for Christian to return.
"Wendy, don’t you see that Christian is really nice to you?" Zen said softly.
"Is that so?" Wendy mumbled softly.
Wendy did not think that was the case. She did not think that Christian stopped her from going out because he was worried about her safety. Rather, he wanted to keep her under his control.
She really wanted to go outside. If Christian went with her, he would be able to control her movements and distract her from thinking. What Wendy wanted the most now was for her memories to return. She wanted to know the truth.
There were many people in the living room, so Wendy did not say anything more to Zen.
A while later, Christian returned. freēwebnovel.com
"Where do you want to go?" Christian’s voice was as gentle as ever. He looked like a husband who really loved his wife.
"It doesn’t matter. I’ve lost my memories. I don’t know where I can go," Wendy said with a smile as she looked at Christian’s familiar yet unfamiliar face. "You didn’t have to come back. I’ll just be taking a walk nearby, and I don’t think anything will happen to me. You’re busy at work, and I shouldn’t have to trouble you."
"You were just rescued, and I don’t think I can be at ease knowing that you’re going out on your own. Moreover, you’re pregnant." Christian sounded genuinely worried.
"I don’t want that incident to happen again. As for work, it can’t be as important as you. The money I’ve made is enough for both of us for the rest of our lives. All I hope is for our family to live together happily. Nothing else is as important as that."
As Zen sat on the couch, she lifted her head and looked at Christian’s side profile.
Panic seized her heart once more. Her heart began to beat faster. Zen closed her eyes. Her brain was in a muddle, and she could not straighten her thoughts. She placed her hand over her heart, hoping to slow it down.
Unfortunately, she could not control her emotions. What was going on? Why was she so agitated whenever she saw Christian? Was Christian merely her good friend’s husband?
"You two can go and take a walk. It’s not very convenient for me to move about. I want to rest at home," Zen took a deep breath and said.
She realized that subconsciously, she wanted to go out with Christian and even become closer to him. She felt uneasy whenever she saw how well Christian was treating Wendy. She did not want to indulge in those feelings. All she could do for now was to keep her distance from Christian.
"We should go together. It’ll be boring for you if you stayed at home," Wendy tried to convince Zen.
She held Zen’s hand and said, "I’ll get someone to prepare a wheelchair for you, and I can push you around. How about that?"
"I..." Zen wanted to tell her that she did not want to go.
Before she could say that, Wendy shook her hand and said, "Let’s go. I don’t remember many things. But I remember that you’re my best friend. I’ll be bored if you’re not coming along with me."
Wendy was actually directing those words at Christian.
...
Wendy was implying that she had no memory of being together with Christian, and she would be bored if she were alone with him. She hoped that Christian would take the hint and stay away from them.
Christian could tell what she was trying to say, but he pretended to be oblivious. He turned his head to look at Zen and tried to convince her. "That’s right. It’ll be more fun if we go along together. I can buy the two of you some new clothes too. Let’s go." freewēbnoveℓ.com
Zen lifted her head. When her eyes met Christian’s gaze, her heart started to beat faster again. She took a deep breath and tried to compose herself.
"Let’s go," Wendy tried once more to convince Zen.
Zen sighed and could only agree to it. "Alright."
"I’ll get someone to prepare a wheelchair for you," Wendy said.
"It’s fine. I’ll only need a walking stick. I can walk on my own," Zen said.
Just as Zen finished speaking, the maid came over with a walking stick.
They went to the car together. Christian wanted to sit next to Wendy, but Wendy did not want to. She said, "How about you sit in front. Zen and I will sit at the back."
Christian was quite reluctant, but since Wendy had suggested it, he could only agree to it.
The driver asked, "Mr. and Mrs. Lucas, where do you want to go?"
"Are there any good boutiques nearby? We’ll go there," Wendy said.
The driver started the car. Wendy’s eyes did not stop looking at the scenery outside the window. She realized that they were not in Lake City.
"Shouldn’t we be in Lake City, Christian? I remember that I’m from Lake City. How did we end up here?" Wendy asked.
Christian had already prepared an excuse. "Lake City is Michael Lucas’s turf. Before he is arrested, we shouldn’t go back. We’re in Rheinsville City now, and it’s very far away from Lake City. Michael won’t be able to find us for now.
"So that’s why." Wendy nodded her head slightly.
Every answer that Christian gave had been meticulously planned. Seeing that Wendy did not ask any more questions, Christian imperceptibly breathed a sigh of relief.
Soon, the car arrived at a street. It was bustling. Wendy seemed to have a vague impression of the place, but she could not remember anything concrete.
After they got out of the car, Wendy helped Zen while Christian followed closely.
There were many boutiques along the street. Christian pointed at a random one and said, "Shall we go in and take a look?"
Wendy nodded. Her purpose of leaving Christian’s home was not because she wanted to get new clothes, but because she wanted to search for something that could trigger her lost memories.
She did not expect that Christian had insisted on coming along. If Christian were not there, Wendy and Zen would be able to move around freely.
"Welcome!" The sales clerk greeted them at the entrance of the boutique.
She could tell that they were not local.
"Do you have any recommendations?" Christian said.
"Of course..." The sales clerk deftly picked two sets of clothes. She placed one set in front of Wendy and the other in front of Zen. "This white one-piece dress is pure and elegant and is suitable for this lady’s demeanor. This navy blue dress set is suitable for this lady. Do you like them? If you do, you can try them out."
Wendy and Zen exchanged glances. They took the clothes and nodded.
Whether the clothes looked good on them was not important. However, they did say that they wanted to go shopping, so they had to play the part.
If they did not try on the clothes or buy something, Christian would suspect their motives.
...
"Thank you," Wendy said politely. She went to the fitting room with Zen.
The fitting room was very spacious. It could accommodate the two women easily.
After they tried on their new clothes, they stood in front of the mirror. They had to admit that the sales clerk chose the right clothes. They fitted perfectly.
"I think it looks quite nice." Wendy twirled around in front of the mirror.
"You’re already a few months pregnant, but your waist is still so slender. I can’t see any bulge at all," Zen said with a smile.
"I don’t remember how many months it has been. It’s four months, I think?" Wendy lowered her head and looked at her stomach. She pressed the dress on her stomach and said, "See, you can see the bulge. The dress is obscuring it."
Indeed, Wendy’s stomach was slightly bulging, but it was not very obvious. One would not know that she was pregnant if they did not look closely.
"Shall we show Christian?" As she spoke, Wendy reached toward the door. Her hand accidentally touched something that hung behind the door. It fell on the floor, and Wendy bent over to pick it up. She saw that it was a feedback booklet. Suddenly, Wendy frowned.
She flipped the booklet open, but another scene appeared in her mind. She was in a fitting room with a feedback form in her hands. She was writing something.
"What’s wrong, Wendy?" Zen noticed that Wendy was rooted to her spot, and that her hands had froze midway as she flipped the booklet.
"What did I write?" Wendy ignored Zen’s question. She tried hard to think of what she had written.
"What are you talking about, Wendy?" Zen was beginning to get worried when she saw Wendy behaving like this.
Wendy closed her eyes, trying to recall her memories. She vaguely recalled that she wrote down a phone number and some words. Whose number was that? Why did she write that number down?
As Wendy was racking her brain, she heard Christian’s voice coming from outside.
"Are you done?"
Christian’s voice snapped her out of her daze. She opened her eyes and gulped. Her heart was beating fast. She did not remember what the number exactly was, but she could tell that the number was very important to her. She had to remember it. But she had to continue stalling for time.
"I’m done." Wendy composed herself and made sure that she looked her usual self.
Then, she smiled, opened the door, and walked out.
Christian’s eyes widened in surprise when he saw Wendy appear in front of him in a white one-piece dress. Wendy had always been a beautiful woman, and it was not the first time that Christian had seen her. However, things were different today.
It was Wendy’s first time treating Christian as her husband and going out shopping with him. The title of husband was fake, but to Christian, it was as real as it could be.
"How do I look?" Wendy twirled in front of Christian. She looked as though she was a wife waiting for her husband’s praise.
"You look wonderful," Christian said genuinely.
Wendy pretended to be happy when she heard that.
Then, she turned to look at the sales clerk and asked her, "How much is this?"
"This is the latest design from a renowned designer. Twenty-nine thousand and three hundred dollars," the sales clerk replied.
Wendy was shocked when she heard that, "How much?"
