Chapter 65: The Secret Plan
Michael was officially the biggest shareholder in MC Enterprise. He commuted to work and had lunch with Wendy every single day. They were always together at the office. All the employees could tell that Michael had acknowledged Wendy as his wife, whereas Yvonne slowly faded away.
The truth was that Yvonne was livid about the situation, but Christian had advised her to stay away from Michael unless there was an emergency. Otherwise, Michael would only feel disgusted by her. Even though Yvonne did not want to listen to Christian, the facts had proven that he was right.
Nothing good had come out of her previous visits to Michael.
The last time she saw him, he told her that he wanted to help her find someone else to marry. Consequently, Wendy also gained a stable footing in the company. Today, she brewed coffee for Michael as usual. When he saw her, his expression became much more affable. He said, "You should leave these menial tasks to my secretary. If you find working too tiring, you
don’t have to stick to the official working hours. You can wake up as late as you want to, go shopping when you get bored, or go to the spa. If that lifestyle becomes too boring for you, you can do what Yvonne did in the past and come to work only when you feel like it."
Wendy was initially happy to hear what Michael had to say, but when he brought up Yvonne, her face instantly darkened. Her mood changed for the worse when she recalled Michael asking her to pour a glass of water for Yvonne the last time she came to work. She said, "I don’t deserve such a good life."
Realizing that he had said something wrong, Michael slapped his own mouth. He then wrapped his arm around her waist, explaining, "I have already made it clear to Yvonne. Don’t worry."
Wendy was surprised to hear that from Michael She asked, "About what?"
"I told her that ..." Before Michael could finish speaking, Mr. York entered the office.
Mr. York felt that he had been very unlucky recently. Ever since Michael improved his relationship with his wife, he kept walking in on them in intimate moments. It made him wish he had a girlfriend, too. Unfortunately, he was too busy working for Michael and had no time for a relationship of his own.
"I’m sorry, I’ll come back later," said Mr. York as he lowered his head, acting like he had not seen anything.
"Remember to knock next time!" Michael’s tone was a little displeased.
Wendy knew that Mr. York only approached Michael when he had official business to report.
She said, "Please go ahead, I’ll get going first." Wendy’s initiative was something that Mr. York appreciated about her. In the past, Yvonne. never cared about Michael’s business affairs.
Instead, she often asked him to keep her company even when he was busy with work as though she wanted to prove her own importance.
However, this time, Mr. York was here for personal matters. After watching Wendy leave, he said, "Mr. Lucas, the custom evening gown that you ordered has arrived. When should I give it to Mrs. Lucas?"
"The party is in three days. Until then, don’t let her find out about this. I want to give her a surprise," said Michael, his eyes lighting up at the last line. After a moment, he asked with worry, "Are the measurements accurate?" If he waited until the day of the party to give the dress to Wendy, it would be too late if she found any errors in the measurements.
"Absolutely. This dress was personally sewn by a famous designer. It is well-known that he only needs to take one look at a photograph of his recipient to accurately determine their measurements," said Mr. York, "Moreover, Mrs. Lucas has a nice figure. I’m sure that the dress will suit her."
"Alright," said Michael as he nodded in satisfaction. He lightly drummed his fingers against the desk, enjoying the rhythmic thuds that were heard.
Since Wendy’s custom-made evening gown had already arrived, Michael asked Mr. York to send out the invitation letters to the party. One of the reasons why he was so anxious about taking over as chairman of the board was that he wished to officially announce Wendy’s status as his wife to the public once he ascended to that position. freewebnoveℓ.com
This was something that he had owed Wendy for the past three years.
Naturally, Christian would also receive an invitation. There was no doubt that Michael wanted him to personally witness such an important moment. Aware that Christian had been pining for Wendy, Michael wanted his half-brother to watch as everyone in Lake City learned about her status as Michael’s wife.
As he sat in his office holding the custom-made invitation with his fingers covering the gold font, a sinister smile appeared on his face. He understood his older brother too well and knew what exactly he was trying to achieve by this.
Gripping the edge of the desk with his fingers, Christian decided that it was time to call his sister-in-law. Instead of calling her on her personal phone, he dialed her office extension.
Just as expected, Wendy answered the phone without thinking too much about it. She said, "Hello, this is the office of the president’s assistant. How can I help you?"
"Wendy, it’s me."
Wendy frowned when she heard Christian’s voice. Thinking that there was nothing to be said between them, she planned on hanging up.
However, he quickly spoke again, "Don’t be in such a rush to hang up. I just called to congratulate you."
"There’s nothing to congratulate," said Wendy.
"It seems like my brother hasn’t told you about it, then," Christian decided to act mysterious.
However, Wendy would not fall into his trap. She simply replied, "If this has nothing to do with work, I’ll hang up..."
"Wait a minute..." Christian’s tone sounded indifferent as he said, "Look, my brother sent out invitations for a party tomorrow night."
"So? What does that have to do with me?" Even though Wendy made sure to sound nonchalant, her heart was pounding.
She thought, is Michael organizing a party tomorrow night? Why I didn’t know anything about this? When Michael bought up extra company shares and worked overtime for so many consecutive days, I didn’t know what was happening either. Even though I don’t usually interfere in his business affairs, at the end of the day, I’m still his wife.
"It’s just a guess for now. Forget it, I don’t think should tell you about it. It would be awkward if I’m wrong about it, and if I happen to be right, it would be such a waste of my brother’s hard Work," said Christian with a grin. "Well, I mostly called because I haven’t seen you in a long time and I missed you."
At that, Wendy stopped her hesitating and hung up immediately. As Christian listened to the beeping over the phone, the look in his eyes darkened even further. He smirked ever so slightly as he stared at his phone. He said, "Wendy, you’ve been enjoying life with my brother for long enough. It’s time that I get involved."
After hanging up the phone, Wendy was puzzled about Christian’s message.
She thought, what exactly is Michael intending to do during the party tomorrow? Most importantly, why did he choose to hide it from me? Since I’m his assistant, I should have learned about this event a long time ago. The only plausible reason behind my ignorance is that he deliberately asked for this to be kept hidden from me. There has been no internal news about this event from within the company, nor has there been any news from the entertainment media. If even Christian has already received his invitation, does this mean that Michael isn’t planning on giving me one? I remember that Michael used to attend various parties and events with Yvonne as his date.
She could not help but overthink the situation. She wondered if Michael was deliberately hiding this from her because he privately planned on taking Yvonne with him again. She knew how scary it was that she had become a bit paranoid about him again, but she could not stop herself from thinking about it.
Christian’s phone call with Wendy was just foreshadowing what was to come. The real show was just about to begin. He looked through his contacts for Yvonne’s number and called her. Ever since Michael rejected her, she had kept herself locked up at home. Christian had also specifically instructed her to wait for an opportunity to come by instead of acting rashly.
Hence, Yvonne was not surprised to receive Christian’s call. She quickly asked, "Has the opportunity finally come?"
"Yes, it’s here," said Christian leisurely. "I need you to come down to the office tomorrow morning. What you will do is this..."
...
Wendy spent the entire afternoon thinking about her conversation with Christian, to the point that she felt she was going insane.
However, she still could not figure out why Michael would hide the news of the party from her. Led by her courageous side, she decided to be straightforward and simply ask Michael about it when she made some coffee for him.
Seeing Wendy linger around him after placing the cup of coffee on his desk, Michael raised his eyebrows and asked, "Is something the matter?"
"Michael..."Wendy pursed her lips and hesitated for some time before she asked, "Are you organizing a party tomorrow night?"
Wendy’s words made him frown. A look of unhappiness surfaced on his face as he said, "Did Christian tell you about it?"
He had long given notice about keeping the party a secret from the media and Wendy specifically. Of course, Yvonne did not know about this either. Now that Wendy had already found out, it could only have come from Christian. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
Wendy felt inexplicably guilty as she saw how sullen Michael’s face became. She knew that Michael had always been bothered about her keeping in contact with Christian behind his back, and now that he had guessed the truth of the matter, she could only bow her head.
She thought, hold on.
Her expression changed dramatically as she looked up, and her pitch grew higher as she said, "Since you managed to guess that it was Christian who told me about it, it’s clear that you must have carefully made sure that the news wouldn’t reach me. Michael, tell me the truth, were you planning on taking Yvonne to the party?"
Michael, who had initially been angry after learning that Christian had contacted Wendy in private, was now amused when he saw how much angrier she was now that she was bringing up Yvonne. The corners of his lips curved upwards. With one hand pressed against the surface of the desk, he gazed at Wendy tenderly and lovingly, He asked, "Are you jealous?"
"Yes, I’m jealous," Wendy could not be bothered to deny it. She simply said, "In the past, you always took Yvonne with you whenever you attended any public events, but all l could do was a turn a blind eye to it. If you still intend for her to be your date this time and toss me aside just like that, then what about everything that we’ve been through together recently? Or did you only treat me better because you wanted to take me away from Christian?"
"Wendy, do you still not understand what kind of person I am?" said Michael.
"I don’t..." replied Wendy with a shake of her head.
Her face was sullen as she continued, "If I did, I wouldn’t have failed at making you fall in love with me after three years of marriage."
Michael did not expect Wendy’s response to be so straightforward and direct, leaving him with no possible retort. But it did not matter to him. In any case, she would understand his intentions after tomorrow. Everyone in Lake City would also know by then.
"I’m busy, let’s talk tomorrow. You can leave first," said Michael, choosing to deliberately keep her in suspense. He picked up his pen and looked down to continue sorting through his documents.
His attitude only made her even angrier. But since he had already asked her to leave, she could not possibly continue to argue with him in his office.
When she left, she made sure to kick the door with great force, causing a loud thud to resonate throughout the room. The price that she paid for that, however, was a throbbing pain in her toes.
As this whole incident had left her rather irritated and upset, Wendy chose not to wait for Michael after work. Michael also did not bother trying to make her less mad at him. Instead, he went straight to sleep in the other bedroom after he got home. He believed that even if she was mad about it today, she would be overjoyed once she learned about the truth the following day.
