Chapter 624: Is There Any Other Way?
As soon as the line got through, Todd said directly, "Hello, Paul."
"Mr. Lewis, hello." Paul was not surprised when he received Todd’s call.
"I will get to the point. I want to ask you for help," Todd worried about Leah and said straightforwardly.
"Are you talking about Leah?" When Paul received this call, he had already guessed what Todd was going to say.
"Yes, please do me a favor anyway," Todd said, "I owe you one. Whenever you need me in the future, I will do my best to help you."
"Okay, I will go to Lake City," Paul sighed over the phone and said, "Honestly speaking, I’ve been busy at work recently. But since you reached out to me, I am not going to reject it." Paul also owed Todd a favor. Todd had once saved Paul by chance when the latter was about to get assassinated by his opponent.
"Great. Thank you, Paul." Todd’s tone was full of joy. "Where are you now? I will pick you up."
"I am in the hospital," Paul said.
After hanging up the phone, Todd quickly packed some daily necessities and then went to pick up Paul. Knowing that Leah had an accident, Todd naturally could not sit still and wanted to go to Lake City to see her in person.
On the way to pick up Paul, Todd called Michael to tell him the news. The line got through at once, Michael had been waiting for Todd to call back.
"How did it go? Did Paul agree?" Michael clenched the phone and asked anxiously.
"Yes, I am going to pick him up now," Todd said, "I will come to Lake City with him."
"You are coming too?" Michael’s tone was a bit solemn when he heard Todd say that he would come to Lake City as well.
"What’s the matter?" Todd’s heart suddenly sank. He thought that Michael still blamed him for the past and proactively explained, "I just want to see Leah, nothing else. After all, I watched Leah and Jake grow up."
"I did not mean that." Michael was silent for a while and continued, "actually, I would like to ask you for a favor."
"Go on," Todd said.
"You have been in Rheinsville City for so many years, and you have some connections and influence there. Can you help me find Wendy?" Michael spoke with contrition in a low tone.
"Wendy?" Todd tightened his hand on the phone when he heard the name. "What’s wrong with Wendy? Isn’t she with you? Why did she come to Rheinsville City?"
Michael had never thought of asking Todd for help before. As an accident happened all of a sudden, followed by the incident of Yvonne’s poisoning, Michael had not figured it out yet and calmed himself down.
Michael thought of Todd now, he could only ask for his help when considering Wendy’s safety. As long as Wendy would be safe, Michael would not hesitate even if Todd asked for his life, let alone a merely verbal request.
"What happened during the last few days is too complicated, and it will be difficult for me to explain clearly to you in a short time." Michael thought for a while, sighed slightly, and said, "To put it simply, Wendy was taken away by Christian. We guessed they would be in Rheinsville City. However, Rheinsville City is too big, and it is out of my sphere of influence.
"When I finish handling Yvonne’s affairs, I will also come to Rheinsville City to look for Wendy. But now, I ask you to do me this favor. Please help me find Wendy, and I will send all my subordinates available to you for assistance."
...
There were still so many things left to be handled by Michael in Lake City, and he was worried about Leah’s status. So he could not leave for the time being. Todd was indeed the best candidate to help him.
"Michael, you have not protected Wendy well." Todd’s tone was charged with obvious disappointment. "I let Wendy go because I hoped you would lead her towards happiness. But unexpectedly, even you could not guarantee her safety."
"It is indeed my fault. I am too stupid," Michael said with deep remorse, "But Todd, I beg you...help me."
"I will look for Wendy, but it has nothing to do with helping you." Todd answered coldly and hung up the phone. He had not expected so many things to have happened in Lake City.
After ending the call, Todd immediately dialed his assistant’s number. "Send all our men to look for Corrine Swift. Stop all the work, no matter how important it is. The only mission right now is to find Corrine."
Naturally, Todd would not go to Lake City knowing that such an incident had occurred with Wendy. He must stay and look for her.
"Great. Paul agreed to come." Michael immediately notified Jake after he hung up, who was stood aside waiting to hear the news.
Jake pulled a long face and gave a soft hum. He and Michael then returned to the ward together.
Leah had already woke up by this time. She sat up straight on the bed and saw her Daddy and Brother walk over. Leah said with a bit of discomfort, "Daddy, Leah feels a little dizzy."
Michael and Jake quickly ran to Leah’s side hearing these words. Michael reached out to touch Leah’s forehead, and then his own.
He could not tell the temperature difference with the touch of a hand, so Michael immediately took the thermometer.
Her temperature turned out to be 98 degrees Fahrenheit. It was now a few degrees higher than what Michael had measured earlier. He suddenly grew extremely frightened and immediately pushed the call button at her bedside.
The doctor soon came in, and Michael said rapidly, "Leah woke up and said her head was a little dizzy. Her body temperature was also a few degrees higher. Could you please check if she is alright?"
The doctor nodded and immediately examined Leah. After a checkup, the doctor said, "Her body temperature did rise a little, but it was within the normal range. At present, it is hard to say whether it is due to the toxins in her body. Let’s observe her for another hour or two and see the situation. Right now, I don’t find it necessary to prescribe antipyretics for Leah." freewёbnoνel.com
"Okay, keep her under observation for longer." Michael nodded. He looked at his daughter on the hospital bed with sore and heavy bloodshot eyes. Michael lowered his head, stretched out his hand, and quickly wiped away tears.
And yet, Leah still saw it.
"Daddy, is Leah going to get sick?" Leah’s eyes were foggy, and apparently, she knew that something was wrong.
"No, Leah is fine." Michael coaxed.
"Daddy, don’t lie to me." Leah sniffed with a little choked voice. "When I was in hospital in Rheinsville City before, I was lying on the hospital bed just like now. And at that time, I also had a fever and felt uncomfortable. My hands were full of injections. Although I was still small at the time, I was always in the hospital. So I guessed."
"It’s not, Leah. It’s not..." Michael did not know what else to say besides that. He did not know how to comfort his daughter.
...
The situation Leah was about to face was terrifying. She was only six years old, still so young, but she had suffered so much.
Jake climbed onto the bed and reached out to hold Leah tightly in his arms. His small head touched hers and he took a deep breath. He controlled his emotions well and said to her, "Leah, do you remember what Mummy said to you before?"
"No matter what we are going to face, Brother and Mummy will always be by Leah’s side."
"Brother will be with you to beat this illness, and Leah, you cannot give up on yourself."
"We must believe that as long as we are brave and more than brave, no disease will defeat us."
"Now, we got Daddy with us too. Isn’t Leah more confident as well?"
Michael was indeed a little scared while he listened to Jake. He was afraid that Leah, at such a young age, would be in such fear. When Leah used to suffer in the hospital, Michael was not by her side. He could not imagine how the three of them, mother and the twins, had survived.
"Jake..." When Michael wanted to say something, Leah cried and nodded.
She sounded naive but firm. "Don’t worry, Brother. No matter how uncomfortable or difficult, Leah will survive, just like before. As long as I do not give up, I will be okay."
Michael could not help but weep as he listened to Leah. Being a tough guy, he turned around at this moment, secretly wiping away the tears.
"Daddy, don’t cry. I feel even worse when you cry." Leah stretched out her hand, seeming to hug Michael.
Michael sniffed and immediately turned around to hug Leah. "Don’t be scared, Leah.
With Daddy here, I will never let you get into trouble or danger." Michael hugged the twins tightly.
"Leah believes in Daddy." She sniffed, with absolute trust in him.
As time passed by, Michael had been paying attention to Leah’s body temperature.
He measured it almost every minute.
They all prayed silently in their hearts that Leah’s body temperature would stop rising. It was a pity that God would not fulfill everyone’s wish.
Leah’s body temperature rose a few degrees within an hour. Although a body temperature of 98 degrees did not require any treatment for ordinary people, Leah was different.
At this particular time, even a slight increase in body temperature indicated that the poison in her body was taking effect. The doctors now formally began to bring down Leah’s fever.
They too were afraid that if they did not bring down her temperature, they would not be able to control it after it exceeded 100 degrees. However, Leah’s body temperature kept rising no matter how they tried to treat her. It seemed that external drugs could not control Leah’s body temperature at all.
Her face slowly turned pale.
Leah felt really uncomfortable, but she had endured it and did not moan again. She knew that the more she cried out, the worse Daddy and Brother would feel.
"Well?" Michael anxiously asked the doctor, "Can Leah’s fever be controlled?"
"We can only offer cooling treatment, nothing else," The doctor sighed and said, "But Leah’s situation seems to be out of our control. If her body temperature rises to 100 degrees, it may be difficult to handle."
"Is there any other way?" Michael choked with sobs. Turning his head, Michael looked at Leah on the hospital bed. His eyes were distressed.
