Chapter 582: Sure Enough, There Was No Escape for Her

"Okay. Got it," said Michael before hanging up the phone.

Michael took the car keys and told Wendy, "Mr. York has the men ready. I have to head over to Christian’s apartment. Evan has already seized the drugs and nabbed the suspects involved in drug trafficking.

"If we only want Christian arrested, just investigating the drug trail is enough to get him sentenced, but Evan and I want to take the opportunity to destroy the entire drug network, so we have to find Christian’s safe. And, we have to do it quickly.

Otherwise, Christian will run the moment he learns of the seizure."

Michael put his shoes on as he spoke.

Wendy walked up beside Michael and said, "I am coming with you."

Before Michael could respond, Wendy explained, "Zen is still at Christian’s place. I don’t know what happened to her and she is now uncontactable. After all, she was working for us, I want to know what the situation is."

"I will give you an update of her situation as soon as possible. Just wait at home and wait for our call when we succeed." Michael was completely against her going.

It would be no ordinary meeting with Christian.

Things would likely get violent and Wendy was pregnant, so Michael did not want to put her at risk.

Wendy wanted to say more, but she too was keenly aware of how dangerous it was.

Wendy did not want Michael to get distracted, so she did not insist and simply said, "Take care."

Michael nodded. Just as he was about to speak, Wendy’s phone rang.

She checked the caller ID and noticed that it was coming from Christian’s residential number.

"Zen is calling." Wendy frowned as she held the phone in front of Michael.

...

Christian had just received a call from his assistant.

His assistant had called to warn him that Michael and the Interpol had gathered men and were probably coming straight for him.

The moment Christian received the news, he knew there was no escape for him today.

He stared at Zen as he asked, "Have you told them?"

"Yes, I have already told them. They are going to be here any minute. Christian, you are dead meat," Zen said as she raised her head and laughed loudly.

"That is impossible..." muttered Christian as he shook his head. "You have only just found the safe. How could you have had the time to notify them? Besides, I have already taken your phone. If you used the landline to call them, I would have known."

Zen had simply wanted to pretend she did it, but Christian surprisingly did not fall for her act.

Zen’s smile instantly disappeared.

Christian knew he had guessed right when the smile disappeared from her face.

This meant that Michael did not know that the safe was at his place.

To be precise, Michael only suspected that the safe was at Christian’s place.

Christian tried to quickly come up with a plan.

Christian bent over and pulled Zen by the collar to lift her off the ground altogether.

"What are you trying to do?" asked Zen.

Christian kept pulling Zen until they got to the phone. He picked up the phone and threw it into Zen’s hands before he said sternly, "Call Wendy and tell her there is no safe in the house. Tell her you have searched the place high and low, but it isn’t here."

Zen’s eyes lit up when she heard him demand her to call Wendy.

She was just wondering how she could get in touch with Wendy and the others.

Christian realized Zen’s intentions. He threatened her once more, "If you dare utter a single wrong word, I will break your legs, Zen!"

...

Christian’s threats always sounded swift and decisive.

Zen trembled when she detected the threatening tone in his voice.

Christian had already dialed the number.

Christian placed the receiver in Zen’s hands and stopped talking. Instead, he looked at her threateningly to show that he meant what he said.

Zen inhaled deeply. Her heart palpitated anxiously as she waited for the phone to get through.

She knew had Christian meant what he said about his threats.

If she tried anything funny and passed them a message about the safe, Christian would undoubtedly break her legs.

What should she do now?

For a moment, Zen hoped Wendy would not pick up the phone.

That way, she would not be in such a huge dilemma.

Sadly, the call went through.

The moment Zen heard the voice coming over the phone, she felt nervous.

"Christian..." Wendy’s voice came from over the phone.

Zen swallowed hard as she held the phone with trembling hands.

Christian glanced at Zen coldly and signaled for her to speak.

"You called. Why aren’t you talking?" Wendy clearly sounded impatient as she said, "If you do not wish to speak, I will hang up."

Wendy did not hang up right away. She had simply said it to trigger the caller into speaking.

Since the call was coming from Christian’s residential line at this hour, it was probably not as simple as it seemed.

Wendy and Michael did not stop walking as they answered the phone and the two of them swiftly headed downstairs.

Michael had to get to Christian’s place immediately.

Evan was already on his way there and would get there really soon.

Michael had to get to Christian’s place before Evan did. After all, he had a personal score to settle with Christian.

It was best if he could obtain evidence against Christian before Evan got there.

Now that Mr. York had already sent men over, Christian couldn’t escape so easily.

"Wendy, it’s me..." Zen inhaled deeply and did her best to compose herself.

Zen scrutinized Christian’s face at the same time.

She slowly stood up from the ground.

Wendy heaved a sigh of relief when she heard Zen’s voice. She hurriedly asked, "I have not heard back from you in days. We were starting to get worried. Are you at Christian’s place? Are you alright?"

"I am fine." Zen bit her lip slightly and said, "I called to tell you..." Before Zen could finish the sentence, Christian took out his gun and pointed it at Zen’s head.

Zen had died once, but she survived it.

Naturally, she was terrified now that a real gun was raised to her head.

However, she had no choice.

Zen blinked and tears trickled down the corners of her eyes uncontrollably.

Her hand trembled as she held the phone receiver.

Since the call was made using the landline, and the telephone cord was short, Zen could not make the call at a distance.

This meant she was under Christian’s control as long as she was on the call.

All Christian had to do was to reach out and grab her.

"Are you calling about the safe?" asked Wendy hurriedly. "Have you found the safe?"Christian could easily hear Wendy’s voice from over the phone as well.

He held the gun to Zen’s head even more closely. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

His lips parted as he mouthed the words, "Tell her there is nothing here."

Zen swallowed nervously as her heart pulsed.

She closed her eyes briefly. The moment she opened her eyes, her face revealed her determination.

...

Zen shouted on the phone at the top of her lungs, "The safe is at Christian’s place.

Come over now!"

The moment she finished her sentence, she hung up the phone and ran.

Even though she knew she couldn’t escape, she was willing to die trying.

Sadly, Zen did not get what she wanted.

Zen swiftly fell onto the ground with a thud.

Zen lowered her head and saw a huge gaping hole in her left leg and tears instantly cascaded down her face.

Sure enough, there was no escape for her.

Zen was on the brink of passing out from the excruciating pain, but she was not quite there yet.

Zen could only swallow the agonizing pain in her thigh.

She heard footsteps coming from behind her and dragged her injured leg and inched towards the door.

Since she was badly injured, she was unable to move quickly. The blood dripped down her leg as she walked towards the door.

Christian walked up beside Zen, raised his foot, and pressed down forcefully on her injured thigh.

Zen screamed in agony as searing pain coursed through her leg and huge beads of sweat gathered on her forehead.

"Zen! Zen!" Wendy desperately shouted as she tried to make out what was going on over at the apartment. "Christian, did you shoot Zen? Christian, do not hurt her! We threatened her into working for us. Christian! Do you hear me, Christian?"

Sadly, no one was around to answer Wendy.

Michael had already gotten into the driver’s seat.

Wendy got into the front passenger seat without hesitation.

"Wendy, it is too dangerous. You have to stay," Michael said anxiously.

Wendy shook her head firmly and said, "You heard. Zen is in danger."

"You promised to wait for me at home." Michael did not start the engine right away and continued to talk Wendy out of it.

He did not want Wendy to come along with him to Christian’s apartment.

"That was different earlier!" Wendy sounded even more determined. She was almost shouting as she said, "I did not know about Zen’s situation then, but I do now. Zen got into trouble because she worked for us, so I have to go."

"But..." Wendy had already put on the seatbelt decisively before Michael could finish. She said firmly, "I told you. Zen is in trouble, so I have to go. No matter what, she got into this because of me. Now that I heard Christian fire the gun at her, how can I quietly go home and wait for you to be done with him? Besides, are you so sure I will be safer at home? If Christian wanted to touch me, it would be just as dangerous no matter where I am."

Wendy was right about that.

Most of Evan and Michael’s men had been deployed to Christian’s apartment by now.

In reality, very few men were guarding Wendy.

If Christian wanted to do anything to Wendy, he must have prepared in advance.

If anything happened at Michael’s place when he got to Christian’s apartment, no one would be around to protect her.

The old residence was far safer, but it was too late to send Wendy all the way there.

If Michael took Wendy with him, he could at least keep an eye on her and ensure her safety.

"Let’s go!" Wendy looked straight ahead as she urged Michael to drive.

Gunshots echoed through the phone as did Zen’s excruciating cries.

Was Zen hurt? Wendy had no idea.
