Chapter 577: She Wanted to Leave Him
Michael was busy all the way until 11 at night.
Just as he was about to get ready to knock off, he received a call from Evan.
"Are you free? Let’s meet up and have a chat," Evan said.
Michael looked at the time and said, "Sure, where are you?"
Evan was at a place that served barbequed food. Michael picked up his jacket and his car keys and drove over.
While walking, Michael sent Wendy a text, "I will be coming back late tonight. Don’t wait up and go to bed early. Love you."
Michael did not call because he was afraid that Wendy might already be sleeping.
But Wendy was not asleep yet and she replied immediately.
Even though she had just replied with a simple "ok", Michael could not help smiling.
When Evan saw Michael, he immediately raised his hand to greet him.
"What would you like to eat?" Evan asked. frёewebnoѵēl.com
It was Michael’s first time at a place like this. He could not help but take a second look at his surroundings.
Evan smiled and asked, "Mr. Lucas, is this your first time eating at a place like this?"
Michael nodded honestly.
"I shan’t treat you to an expensive meal with my wage. Besides, you are always eating at fancy restaurants. It’s a nice change to be eating at a different kind of place occasionally. It can be pretty nice too." Then, Evan handed the skewers on the table to Michael.
Michael took the skewer and looked at it before taking a bite. It tasted pretty good.
Michael smile and gave a hum of appreciation.
"Do you want some beer?" Evan asked as he looked at Michael’s car, which he had parked some distance away.
Evan had noticed that Michael did not drive a fancy car. It seemed that Michael had intentionally driven an ordinary car to meet him. One had to admit that Michael was rather careful about such things.
Evan spoke again when he saw Michael nodding, "You can’t drive after drinking. frёewebηovel.cѳm
You’ll have to get someone to drive you home later."
"I’ll get my assistant to pick me up later," Michael said as he enjoyed the skewers.
They were really delicious. He soon picked up another one.
"Haha..." Evan could not help but feel a little awkward when he heard Michael saying that his assistant would come and pick him up later.
How could he have forgotten? Michael was a CEO.
"Hi, two bottles of beer," Evan said as he waved to a waiter.
The beers were quickly served to them. Evan opened the bottles and handed one to Michael.
"Why did you ask me to come here? Aren’t you afraid that Christian’s men might see us?" Michael asked as he clinked glasses with Evan.
"It no longer matters whether Christian knows about our relationship," Evan said rather cheerfully while raising his eyebrows.
"Do you mean that you’ve found something?" Michael immediately asked when he heard that.
"I asked you to come here today to tell you what exactly happened." Evan downed some beer and placed his glass on the table.
Then, he said, "Interpol has already found the drugs smuggled in from abroad. We have not yet seized the drugs but everything is already under our control. If we seize the drugs now, it would be difficult for us to capture Christian, who is behind all this.
After all, the evidence that we have cannot prove that he has anything to do with this shipment of drugs.
"We plan to let them start peddling the drugs so that we can capture him with more conclusive evidence."
...
This was good news to Michael.
Evan took another drink from his glass before continuing, "There are risks. We will get our own people to buy these drugs, but we cannot guarantee that the drugs will not get into the hands of other buyers. Once the drugs are being sold, there’s a risk of harming whoever buys it, even if it were only one person who gets his hands on it.
Of course, we will try our best to minimize such risks."
"This is inevitable," Michael said after hearing Evan’s words. "Christian is a drug kingpin and if we want to get him once and for all, we have to make some sacrifices.
We can’t just seize the drugs because we are afraid that someone might get their hands on them. Even if you could stop the drugs from being peddled this time, what will happen the next time? Or subsequently in the future? As long as Christian is still around, he will be able to bring drugs into the city."
"Yeah, you are right." Evan sighed. "Sometimes, sacrifices are necessary. But then again, those who buy drugs should not be pitied either. They know that drugs are banned but they’re willing to get it underground. They can’t blame anyone if they end up as the collateral damage."
Evan lifted his head and looked at Michael, who was seated across him. He asked, "What about your side? How is Miss Tanner doing? Interpol is waiting for the evidence. The drugs have already gone through customs and Christian will definitely think of ways to peddle them. We don’t have much time. If we wait for this shipment to be sold or if we let them have enough time to react and flee from Lake City, it would be difficult for us to go after them without help from Interpol. After all, our goal is not just to nab Christian, but to bring down the entire drug ring."
Michael frowned. He shook his head and said, "Things aren’t going as smoothly as we expected on Zen’s end. She still has not returned to Christian’s home."
"Then what will happen next?" Evan asked.
"I intend to force our way in." Michael did not want to go down this road. But he did not have any other choices now.
"You and Christian are already opponents. If you force your way into his home with a bunch of people, this will be another personal feud between the two of you. If this blows up, you probably won’t be afraid of Christian and he can’t do anything to you either," Evan said. "But it is different for us. We can’t do anything before we have any evidence due to the nature of our jobs."
"I understand." Michael nodded.
"But move carefully. The drugs have only just gotten through customs and it will still take some time before it gets peddled. It will probably take two or three days. It would be great if we can find the evidence within two days," Evan said. "I will contact you again."
"Sure," Michael nodded once more.
Evan clinked glasses with Michael again before saying, "I have always wanted to ask you, what are the chances that the safe is in Christian’s house?"
Evan quickly explained, "It’s not that I don’t believe you, but the safe is the most crucial part of this operation. If we cannot find the safe that has evidence pinning Christian’s guilt in the next two days, then we can’t move forward with our plans."
"I cannot be certain that the safe is in Christian’s house. But it should be there. I have already gotten people to search all other possible places. The only place we haven’t searched is where he is staying. According to my understanding of him, there is a high chance that it is there," Michael answered.
"A high chance," Evan repeated as he lowered his head and sighed. "Alright then."
...
The next night, Zen noticed Lydia calling Christian again.
She walked over stealthily. She could not really hear what Lydia was saying through the door. But she could vaguely make out that Lydia was talking about her drawing last night.
When she heard footsteps, Zen hurriedly went back to the couch and sat down. She pretended to be watching the television.
As expected, Lydia walked past her and went straight to Zen’s bedroom. Zen followed her into the room and pretended to be angry as she asked, "Why are you in my room?"
Lydia did not reply but did as Christian asked her to. She took a photo of what Zen had drawn and sent it to Christian.
"Why did you take a photo of my drawings?" Zen walked up to Lydia and picked up the drawings. She demanded angrily, "Why are you touching my things without asking for my permission?"
"Sorry, Mr. Lucas wants to look at them," Lydia answered, lowering her head slightly.
Then, she turned around and left, not giving Zen any other explanation.
Lydia was sent by Christian to watch her. Zen noticed that Lydia would enter her room every day. Lydia claimed that she was helping Zen to tidy up, but she was really there to check if anything was amiss.
And just as Zen had expected, Lydia had sent her drawings to Christian. Zen’s brows furrowed as she watched Lydia walk away.
Whether or not she could go to Christian’s house would depend on the effectiveness of these drawings. If they couldn’t make Christian bring her home, then she wouldn’t know what else would.
Meanwhile, Christian was looking at the drawings on his cellphone. The more he looked at them, the deeper his frown. Then, he smashed his fist angrily on the tabletop.
Christian gritted his teeth before he spat, "Zen Tanner, do you want to leave me that badly? What gives you the right to leave me?"
Lydia had sent a total of seven drawings to Christian. Every drawing was of a blissful and harmonious family of three. They were drawn in a cartoon style.
In the first drawing, a woman was playing with a child in the yard.
In the second drawing, the woman was watering the plants while a man embraced her from behind.
In the third drawing, the family of three was eating at the dining table and the man was serving the woman and the child food.
In the fourth drawing, the woman was cooking in the kitchen while the man helped her with washing up.
...
All seven drawings were of such heartwarming images of a simple life. However, the man did not have a face in every single one of those drawings. The man’s face was blank.
Christian could see that Zen was trying to express one thing with these drawings.
That was, she wanted to leave him.
And Zen thought that if she left Christian, she would be able to live blissfully.
The man in the drawing did not have a face because Zen still did not know who she would be spending the rest of her life with.
Christian gripped his cellphone tightly. He immediately picked up his car keys and left his office.
"Sir, I have a document..." Christian’s assistant saw Christian walking away quickly and followed behind, yelling after him.
Before he could say anything else, Christian replied frostily, "Let’s talk about it tomorrow!"
His assistant did not dare run after Christian when he heard Christian’s tone. Even though he did not know what had happened, he was afraid that Christian would turn his ire upon him.
