Chapter 546: I Can Have A Better Partner
Clement seemed to have figured something out when he saw Michael’s reaction. He then asked, "Michael, don’t tell me that you hunted me down because you thought that I slept with Corrine."
If that really was the case, Clement felt like there was still hope for him.
"What exactly happened that night? Come clean with me!" Michael moved his gun from Clement’s chest to his forehead. He then warned him coldly, "If you dare to lie, I will kill you."
"How could I lie in this state?" Clement exclaimed as a sense of relief washed over him. He then started narrating what happened immediately, "That night, Corrine invited me to her house and spiked my drink.
"I’ve been visiting seedy places from time to time. There isn’t any drug or wine that I have never come across. Besides, I’m sensitive to drugs since birth. I can identify a drug even if it doesn’t have any taste or smell. So I didn’t take the spiked wine.
"I did plan to sleep with Corrine. "After all, she’s my type and I do like her a lot."
When Michael heard Clement say that he liked Wendy a lot, he couldn’t hold back his anger and he gave Clement a brutal kick. Clement was pushed backwards by the impact of the kick. He couldn’t help but cough, which intensified his pain. He then grimaced.
Clement cursed himself inwardly for provoking Michael in his current predicament.
He then continued. "Didn’t you arrive just in time before I got to do anything? I didn’t have a choice but to leave. I didn’t even get to do anything."
He added on as he was afraid that Michael refused to believe him. "It’s the truth. I didn’t get a chance to do anything."
Wendy left her seat after hearing what Clement said. She then walked towards Michael. She was obviously agitated as she asked Clement, who was still on the ground, in a trembling voice, "Are you telling the truth?"
"What good would it do for me to lie at this point?" Clement coughed helplessly.
"Perhaps you said all these just so that Michael would spare your life." Wendy was getting upset as she replied Clement. She was worried that Clement was lying.
"Corrine, aren’t you supposed to know if anything had happened to you?" Clement felt extremely helpless. "I have never expected this to be the reason of you hunting me down. I didn’t even do anything. Is it even worth spending so much of your resources?"
"I..." Wendy lowered her head while clenching her fist. She then said, "But someone told me that I was naked that day..."
Wendy was unconscious and wounded. So she didn’t know what happened to her.
"You were naked?" Clement didn’t understand what she meant. "What do you mean?" ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
"It means that all her clothes were taken off," Michael explained. He then emphasized, "All of it!"
"I have been wronged. I didn’t remove her clothes, I only took off her coat," said Clement. "I didn’t even get to take her clothes off. How could I possibly have done anything to her?"
Wendy and Michael looked at each other. They were surprised.
Wendy was trying to recall what happened that night. "If what you said is true, then who was the one who removed my clothes? I was unconscious. I couldn’t have done it myself."
...
"I have no idea who did it, but I can assure you that I wasn’t the one who removed your clothes," Clement said seriously. He was still afraid of being shot by Michael.
"Then what about the letters?" Wendy glanced at Clement as she asked. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
"Letters? What letters?" Clement was confused. "I don’t know anything about any letter."
Michael and Wendy looked towards each other after hearing what Clement said. He didn’t know anything about the letters?
Michael stepped forward and stood in front of Clement. He then bent over and grabbed his collar as he said, "Repeat what you have just said!"
"Wh... what did I say?" Clement was quite confused. "I didn’t do anything to Corrine.
What do you want me to say?"
"About the letters. Do you really know nothing about the letters?" asked Michael.
"No, I don’t," Clement was at a loss. He seemed to be telling the truth.
Clement saw that his chance of survival had just increased drastically.
"Is there some misunderstanding going on between us?" Clement gulped as he asked with anticipation.
Michael and Wendy were no longer interested in Clement. Michael stood up and looked at Wendy in the eye. He then said joyfully, "Wendy, did you hear that?
Nothing happened that night."
Wendy nodded vigorously. She couldn’t hold back her tears of joy. The incident that happened that night had been tormenting her for nights, giving her nightmares. She had been worried that the child she was carrying might belong to Clement. Now, she could finally rest assured now.
"If what Clement said is true, then what’s with the letters?" Wendy asked Michael while sobbing.
Michael reached out and wiped away her tears gently. His expression became slightly more serious. He was thinking. When Michael looked into Wendy’s eyes once more, he could tell that she had probably figured something out.
"You’ve figured it out, yes?" asked Michael.
Wendy didn’t want to admit it.
Michael then started his analysis. "Todd Lewis," Michael hissed while gritting his teeth in anger.
"Todd has always had feelings for you. He wanted to use this opportunity to ruin our relationship. He thought that I would never accept the fact that you have been tainted by another man.
"If that were to happen, he would finally have the chance to get close to you and be together with you. But he didn’t expect my feelings for you to remain unchanged. So he secretly sent you all those letters to provoke you.
"He knows you very well. He knows that you are too proud to accept the fact that you’ve been tainted by another man. You would feel that you have betrayed me and wouldn’t be able to get pass that even if I refused to break up with you.
"Todd wanted to use this opportunity to come between us. But his plan failed, which was why he showed his true colors the night before he knew we were leaving for Lake City, and he resorted to using force.
"Besides, Todd was at the scene during the night of that incident. But he left your room before I arrived. Seems like he had removed your clothes and went into hiding afterwards to cover up his tracks.
"Wendy, do you still remember that the reason why you knew that something had happened to you that night was because Todd kept reminding you about it. I had given Todd several warnings to stop talking about it in front of you. But he had deliberately continued to do so."
...
Michael’s analysis was spot on. Now that things had turned out this way, it was clear who the culprit was. But Wendy couldn’t believe that Todd was the one behind it all.
They were friends. Todd had been extremely helpful when she was in Rheinsville City. Why did things turn out this way?
Wendy took a deep breath. She was feeling rather depressed. Michael held Wendy’s hand as he tried to comfort her. But he didn’t know what to say to her. He then sighed helplessly after a while.
After listening to their conversation, Clement knew that it was all a huge misunderstanding. He then endured his pain as he said, "Since this is all a misunderstanding, isn’t it time for you to let me go?"
Michael turned around and looked at Clement when he heard his voice. He then said, "Although this is a misunderstanding, you did hurt Wendy. I haven’t forgotten about the fact that you were to one who had beaten Wendy up. She was covered in blood!"
Clement didn’t do anything inappropriate to Wendy that night. But Wendy did get hurt because of him. Michael could clearly remember the sight of Wendy being covered in blood. Since his wife was bullied, he must avenge her.
"Please be reasonable, Mr. Lucas," Clement said helplessly. "Corrine was the one who was trying to get close to me in the first place. She was the one who approached me. I was just turning the tables against her. Yet you are putting all the blame on me? Is that even reasonable?"
"Reasonable? Is there a need for me to be reasonable with you?" said Michael grimly.
Wendy was indeed the one who was scheming against Clement in the first place.
Unfortunately, her schemes were exposed by Clement. But Clement wasn’t a good person either. His hands were stained with the blood of many. If Michael were to let him off just like that, he would be letting a murderer go scot free.
"Even if I really did beat Corrine up, you have beaten me up today as well. You’ve already avenged her," Clement reasoned as civilly as possible. He was still in the Michael’s hands, so he had to watch his tone. "Look at my injuries, they are several times worse than Wendy’s."
"Since you’re working for Christian, wouldn’t I be looking for trouble if I were to let you off just like that?" said Michael.
"First of all, I don’t work for him. We are business partners. Secondly, our hatred is not so deep for you to actually kill me, right? Besides, you won’t benefit from killing me, so what’s the point?"
Clement added on, "I actually admire you. Are you really not going to consider being my business partner?"
"You are well aware that Christian and I are at each other’s throats. What would happen to Christian if we were to work together?" Michael scoffed.
Michael was merely stringing Clement along. He knew Clement would agree to terminate his partnership with Christian just to save his own skin.
Clement wasn’t someone with dignity, neither was he loyal.
As expected, Clement replied with a smile. "You are much more capable than Christian. If are willing to work with me, I will throw Christian aside. Why do I need him when I can have a better partner?"
"Heh heh..." Michael looked down at Clement. He then asked, "What will we be working on then?"
"Erm..." Clement wasn’t an idiot. He knew what Michael was trying to do. He then tried to deflect the question. He laughed it off by saying, "I will tell you more about it once we start working together."
