Chapter 521: Demon From Hell

Wendy returned home bone-weary. freēwebnovel.com

Leah and Jake were overjoyed to see her and ran to welcome her home. However, Wendy was too tired to entertain them.

Holding Leah’s hand, Michael said, "Mummy is very tired today, let’s not disturb her okay? Let Mummy rest for a bit."

Leah nodded immediately and did not bother Wendy anymore.

Other than being tired, Wendy was also starving. It was already late at night and she had yet to have dinner. It wouldn’t be so bad to go hungry if it were just her, but she had a baby to think of now.

Michael quickly made her a sandwich but saw that she was not resting when he brought it in for her.

She was staring at an image on her cell phone. It was a picture of her and Zen, taken when they were in university.

Back then their smiles were so unadulterated.

She remembered how spirited Zen used to be.

Putting the plate with the sandwich down carefully, Michael gently took Wendy’s phone away from her. Tenderly, he said, "Have a sandwich, then go to sleep. We will visit Zen again at the hospital tomorrow."

"Okay." She answered softly, her voice choking up with emotion.

Michael’s heart ached for her looking upon that tear-streaked face.

He reached out to dry her tears with his hand and reassured her, "Zen will be okay, don’t worry."

Picking up the sandwich from the plate, he fed it to her slowly.

Wendy didn’t want to cry, but she could not help the tears that fell whenever she thought about their halcyon days in school.

Best friends were rare and hard to come by.

She did not want Michael to worry about her, so she opened her mouth when he brought the sandwich up to it even though she did not really have an appetite.

After she had the sandwich, Michael helped Wendy to the bed and covered her with the blanket.

Michael then lay down next to Wendy and reached out to pat her gently with one hand, coaxing her to sleep as he would a child. "Wendy, close your eyes and sleep.

Everything will be better when you wake up."

Wendy closed her eyes slowly and tried to go to sleep.

However, every time she closed her eyes, images of Zen lying in a pool of blood would rise unbidden in her mind.

She sniffled and the tears once again flowed out uncontrollably.

Michael was at a loss. He didn’t know how to console her.

After some thought, he offered, "Shall I tell you a bedtime story? Leah always falls asleep very quickly when I tell her a story before bed."

Wendy knew Michael was trying very hard to make her feel better.

She shifted herself slightly and put her arm around Michael’s waist in a loose hug.

Closing her eyes, she muttered, "Sing me a song instead. Any song will do."

Wendy realized she had never heard Michael sing before.

Michael murmured in assent before racking his brains for a song to sing. He suddenly realized he did not know how to sing any song.

"How about a story instead?" he asked.

"Don’t you know how to sing?" asked Wendy. "Just sing any song."

Michael frowned at Wendy’s request. After thinking for a moment, he started singing, "Arise, those who would not be subjugated..."

The moment she heard the lyrics, Wendy’s eyes snapped open.

Was he singing the national anthem to her...as a lullaby? Even worse, it was out of tune!

If it weren’t for the lyrics, Wendy would not have recognized it as the national anthem.

"Don’t you know any other song?" Wendy complained.

How was she supposed to sleep with such a rousing song?

...

Michael rubbed his nose. It was making things difficult for him.

If he were to say Leah was like Wendy, they were multi-talented. They could sing and dance.

Then, Jake got it from Michael. They couldn’t sing and their body coordination was bad.

"Lullaby? Nursery rhyme?" Wendy asked, looking at Michael as he frowned. She added, "Or any soothing song will do."

"This..." The only complete song that Michael could sing was the national anthem.

He didn’t know any other songs.

He wouldn’t bother about songs that he heard before. He could only hum a few lines at most.

But needless to say, the melody wouldn’t be in tune.

"I think I’d better tell you a story instead. I’m better at that," Michael suggested, smiling.

To coax Leah to bed, he learned many bedtime stories.

In the past, he had to refer to the book. But then, Michael no longer needed the book. He could recite the story with a gentle voice at any given time, "Once upon a time, there was a big bad wolf..."

Listening to Michael’s voice, Wendy shut her eyes again.

The fact that Michael read the story with a gentle, low voice was rather relaxing.

As for singing, forget about it. Wendy wouldn’t force him to do it anyway.

If she were to force him, the one getting hurt in the end would be her own ears.

Wendy slowly fell asleep.

On the second day when Wendy woke up, Michael already prepared breakfast.

Looking at Wendy walking out from the bedroom, Michael said, "Come and have some food. I will go to the hospital with you after breakfast."

"It’s okay. I can go on my own. Go ahead with your schedule. There are many things to take care of in the office. You have to manage the thing about Alice as soon as possible too."

"I already assigned Mr. York to take care of Alice. He said that he took care of it yesterday. Alice is already under his control," Michael said. He didn’t want to talk about Christian. But the moment the topic was brought up, Michael let out a sigh unnoticeably. He added, "There is one more thing. I didn’t tell you because you fell asleep last night."

"What is it?" Wendy asked. She looked at Michael’s somber look and she had a bad feeling about it.

"Christian got someone to contact the media yesterday. He told the media about Zen’s admission into the hospital. There were reporters who went to the hospital last night," Michael answered.

"Why did he tell the media about Zen’s hospital admission?" Wendy asked, frowning.

She couldn’t understand why he did that.

"I think we will find out what he is up to when the entertainment news is out. Let’s eat first. We are going to the hospital after breakfast. We might run into reporters there," Michael said, filling up a bowl of porridge and he placed it before Wendy.

Wendy took a look at the time. It was only seven in the morning.

The morning entertainment news would only be out later.

Wendy finished half a bowl of porridge with a puzzled mood.

She suddenly felt her stomach churning. She put down her cutleries and rushed to the toilet to throw up.

Michael quickly followed behind, laden with anxiety. He patted Wendy’s back, asking, "Are you feeling okay?"

"I’m okay," Wendy vomited and she felt much better.

"You’ve already started torturing your mom. When you are out, I have to teach you a lesson," Michael said with a poker face, rubbing Wendy’s stomach. He looked like he was threatening the baby.

"Why are you so childish? The child is only an embryo now," Wendy teased.

"Go and have some more. Whatever you ate earlier is all out now," Michael exhorted, helping Wendy out of the toilet.

Wendy tried to eat some more.

It was the weekend. So, Wendy didn’t wake her two children up.

Let them sleep in a little longer.

She put on some light makeup and changed her outfit. Then, she headed to the hospital with Michael.

Michael drove the car on his own while Wendy sat in the passenger seat.

She took a look at the time. Then, she took out her phone and tapped on the entertainment news link.

As expected, the first entertainment news was about Zen. The headline said, "The capable and beautiful designer, Zen Tanner, collapses to fulfill her dream."

Wendy quickly tapped on the headline to read the news.

The news reported that Zen always had a dream. Her dream was that the garments that she designed could be sold well globally. In order to fulfill her dream, she stayed up late all the time to design her draft even during her late pregnancy. Even when she completed her drawings, she continued to pull all-nighters to amend and improvise her drawings in order to achieve perfection. In the end, she got into trouble the day before. Her body collapsed and she was admitted into the ICU. She even lost her baby.

In the news, they put in a photo of Zen’s back when she was drawing and also another photo of her in ICU. There was also a photo of her drawing.

It was also the drawing that Christian posted on his Twitter before, Alice’s drawing.

"I feel sorry for Zen. She must get well soon. When her design is out, I will definitely buy a set to show support."

"A mother can’t bear to see such a sight. If Zen was to find out that she had lost her baby when she woke up, just how heartbreaking would that be? Looking forward to you getting well and seeing your design sell well globally with your own eyes. I will buy them too."

"D*mn! She continued to pursue her dream during her late pregnancy. In the end, she lost her baby to her dream? I can only say, well done, Zen."

"I said so long ago. It is only a matter of time until Zen gets herself into trouble with her working like that. As expected! She has been pregnant for a few months.

Doesn’t she know what her health condition is? One has to pursue her dream according to her capabilities. She now lost her baby to her dream and she is also half dead herself."

"Are you a cold-blooded animal?! Zen is so hardworking. There is nothing wrong with her going after her dream! She is a mother. Would she not love her baby? In reality, you must be the kind of person who is lazy and moan and groan without being ill!

The kind of person who is only thinking about marrying a rich person!"

"What the hell? Is work so important? You even gave up on your own life and your baby’s life?

I don’t know what to say."

"What do you mean that I am the kind of person who is lazy and moan and groan without being ill! I think you are the cold-blooded and selfish one! You neglect your baby for the so-called dream of yours! It has been eight months! A baby can live if it was carried to full term safely! But it lost its chance to live because of her so-called dream."

"I understand Zen. I gave up my job because of my baby back then. I became a full-time mom at home. I can understand the kind of feeling where one is forced to give up her career for her baby. If I could choose again, I would continue to work. Women don’t only have their family, their children and their husbands, but women also have their own lives. I admire Zen. What she did is something most of us can’t. I hope she can get well soon. The moment the garments she designs are on the market, I will definitely buy them."

...

Wendy glanced through the comments.

There were obviously two extremes.

Wendy’s hands were shivering in anger after she read the comments. She nearly threw her phone out of the car.

Luckily, she was rational enough to stop herself.

Wendy was extremely angry. She told Michael, "Is Christian a human? How dare he create such news?! That is his child! His child died and Zen is in the ICU. He still took advantage of the situation under such circumstances. I have lived for so long and this is my first time seeing such a cold-blooded person. I’m afraid he is not a human, but a demon from hell."
