Chapter 516: I Will Repay You

Michael had said to use the money prudently so it would last Zen through the birth of her child. Wendy felt like rolling her eyes at him. Two hundred thousand was enough to last a regular family at least ten years! Michael had been born into a wealthy family and obviously had no concept of money.

However, she gave credit where it was due and firmly patted Michael on his shoulder. "Well done, you thought of everything," she commended him with a smile.

Wendy closed the case and passed it to Zen. Two hundred thousand in notes was quite heavy after all. Putting the case next to Zen, she said, "Take this with you."

"I cannot take..." Zen wanted to reject the money. She was too embarrassed to accept money from Michael and Wendy.

"Do you have any money on you?" Wendy asked.

"Yes, don’t worry," replied Zen.

"Take it out and show me," Wendy persisted.

"I..." In fact, Zen had no money. Her movements had been restricted by Christian and she did not have even a cent on her.

Wendy had guessed as much and had deliberately led Zen to admit that she had nothing. Patting the case of money, Wendy said, "Consider it a loan from me. You’ll have to repay me with interest in the future."

She only said that so that Zen would not feel bad about taking the money.

Zen was so heavily pregnant. She had to have money with her, otherwise it would be very hard for her to survive on her own.

"I..."

Before Zen could say more, Wendy interrupted her. "Stop the meaningless talk. I’m going to throw you out of the car if you continue rejecting me." Wendy’s frigid tone scared Zen into reflexive silence. The interior of the car was quiet for a while.

It was a while later when Zen finally lowered her head and said with sincerity, "Thank you Wendy. I will repay you."

Actually, Wendy didn’t care if Zen would return her the money or not. She was not short of money anymore. Suddenly, Wendy thought of their shared past. The two of them were as close as thieves when they were studying in university. They went everywhere and did everything together. Back then, whether it was Wendy who ran out of money or Zen, it didn’t matter. They wouldn’t have to worry about filling their stomachs. The other one would make sure their friend would not starve. From clothes to makeup, everything was shared.

Later, when both of them joined MC and Wendy was often too broke to eat because Michael would dock her pay for all kinds of reasons, Zen had helped her unconditionally. If she hadn’t, Wendy would have fallen ill due to malnutrition or even starved to death. That was why, the moment Zen indicated that she wanted to leave Christian, Wendy was willing to help her even though Zen had betrayed her in the past.

"Okay," Wendy answered quietly.

The scenery outside the car flew by as the car sped on. Looking out of the window, Zen felt lonesome and afraid. Once she left Lake City, she would be going to an unfamiliar place. She wondered what would be waiting for her there.

Wendy seemed to sense Zen’s unease and reached out to gently pat her shoulder in an attempt to reassure her. "Don’t think so much. If you can’t get used to life there and you simply cannot soldier on, come back to Lake City. If you stay with me, Christian can’t do anything to you."

Zen shook her head and said firmly, "I can do it." She didn’t want to be a burden to Wendy.

At this moment, the baby in Zen moved. She lowered her head and asked softly, "Baby, are you also looking forward to the future?" There was no answer, which was to be expected.

"Have you thought of a name?" Wendy asked, looking at Zen’s baby bump.

...

Zen shook her head. "I had thought of letting Christian name the baby. Now, I think I’ll do it myself."

She had thought of some names.

If it was a boy she would name him Christopher, if it was a girl, she would name her Christina.

She wanted neither of those names now. She didn’t want anything that reminded her of Christian. She didn’t want to love him anymore.

...

At this moment, Christian was in a meeting. His assistant hurried into the room in a fluster. He went straight to Christian’s side interrupting the meeting.

Christian immediately flared up. He growled, "Where’s your common sense?"

Usually, no one was allowed to disturb Christian while he was in a meeting.

Furthermore, that day’s meeting had been an extremely important one.

His assistant whispered, "Mr. Lucas, Miss Tanner has escaped."

That piece of information instantly truncated everything Christian was about to say.

He put down the document in his hands and frowned. His expression icy, he asked, "What did you say?"

Feeling the frigid air that seemed to emanate off Christian, his assistant shrunk back a little and repeated, "Miss Tanner has escaped."

"Didn’t she go for her prenatal checkup?" Christian asked flatly.

"The bodyguards who were following Miss Tanner secretly reported that Michael personally led men to take her by force. They are headed for the bus station. It seems they are planning to take Miss Tanner out of Lake City," reported his assistant.

Unbeknown to Zen, other than the two bodyguards who accompanied her, there were two others who followed her in secret.

After all, Zen was a very important pawn in Christian’s plan.

Slamming his fist fiercely on the table, Christian snapped, "Stop them immediately! freewebnovel.cσ๓

If you can’t stop them, contact the bus station. Have them stop all the buses and lock down the station!"

"The bus station they are heading for is not one of ours. It’s under Michael’s control.

We won’t be able to lock that station down," his assistant told him quite matter-of-factly.

"In that case make sure you stop them! Stop them immediately!" Christian then stormed out of the meeting room, ordering as he walked, "Get the car ready, I’m going myself!"

Christian’s assistant immediately fell into step beside him. "The car is ready and waiting," he informed Christian.

He had been working for Christian for a long time and could now anticipate his boss’s orders.

"How long have they been gone?" Christian asked.

"Barely ten minutes. If we hurry, we might be able to catch up with them," replied his assistant.

Christian’s started taking bigger steps and walking faster when he heard his assistant’s reply.

Did she want to leave him?

Impossible! He would never let her go!

"What’s happening? Is the Miss Tanner they are talking about, the designer Zen Tanner?"

"Don’t you read the entertainment news? Everyone knows that Mr. Lucas and Miss Tanner are together, and that their child will be born soon."

"What is Miss Tanner escaping from, and why is Michael Lucas involved? Isn’t Michael Lucas our boss’s enemy?"

"It’s entertainment news. Since it’s entertainment, who knows what’s true and what’s not?"

"Let’s go. I doubt the meeting will continue. Everyone can leave now."

...

The car sped along the road and finally arrived at the bus station.

Wendy told Zen as she helped her out of the car, "It’s likely that Christian already knows you’ve escaped. Go, quickly. Michael has already called ahead to make arrangements with the bus station. Christian will not be able to get any information from them. Just get on the bus for whichever city you intend to go to. To make sure Christian does not get a lead on you, you might want to change buses a few times.

Take care of yourself after you leave Lake City."

As soon as Wendy finished talking, Michael handed Zen the briefcase in his hand.

Zen took the case and gave Michael and Wendy a bow.

She did not try to thank them again because she knew there were no words that could express the gratitude she felt toward the two of them.

...

Case in hand, Zen hurried into the bus station.

She hadn’t expected to meet Wendy at the hospital and her escape was totally unplanned. As such, she had no idea where she should go.

Zen looked around the station and decided that she would get on the bus that would leave the soonest. She would change a few buses later on.

Just as she was about to get on her bus of choice, a commotion broke out behind her.

"Zen Tanner!" Christian had dashed past multiple red lights and finally managed to get to the bus station before she left.

Michael’s bodyguards moved to block Christian’s way at a glance from Michael.

Without hesitation, Christian continued forward after fiercely punching the first guard he came upon. "Zen Tanner, you want to leave? Try, and see what happens!"

Although Christian did not specifically say what he would do, his warning aroused fear in Zen’s subconscious, and her legs went weak.

"Get out of my way!" Christian shouted at the guards blocking his path. His fist was clenched so tightly those nearest to him could hear his knuckles crack.

"Christian, there’s no point in forcing her to stay if she wants to leave," said Michael as he stepped in front of Christian. In an attempt to buy time, he continued, "From what I know of you, you are not one who would force someone to stay with you."

"Ah, since when have you known me so well, I wonder?" Christian turned his head slightly and looked directly at Zen, who had frozen in place. freewebnovёl.ƈom

Fear was apparent in her eyes.

Wendy knew Michael was deliberately holding Christian back. She quickly went to Zen and gave her a gentle shove. "Go, what are you waiting for?"

Zen gulped. She had become rooted to the ground in fear but soon brought back to her senses by Wendy’s push. Turning, she started up the bus.

"You dare leave?" Christian menacingly shouted at her again.

Gesturing to Michael’s men, he then ordered his own guards, "Get them out of my way!"

Michael did not have many guards with him. He had intended to take Zen to the bus station as soon as possible.

Bringing too many people with him would have attracted too much attention and been counterproductive.

Christian, on the other hand, had come prepared. He had brought many more men than Michael.

Soon, Michael’s men had all been neutralized by Christian’s men.

Reaching up to straighten his tie, Christian shot a cold glare at Michael. "I suggest you mind your own business."

He then walked towards Zen.

"Christian!" Michael called out at Christian’s back, "You can have any woman you want. Why must you force her to stay?"

"Ha-ha." Christian looked back at Michael and laughed. "I want Wendy. If you give her to me, I will let Zen go. How about that?"

"No way!" Michael replied without a second thought.

Christian was still hung up on Wendy? Dream on!

Christian looked at Michael’s guards surrounded by his guards and warned, "If you do not want your wife to be injured, stop sticking your nose in my business!"

Even if Michael called for backup now, it would take at least half an hour for help to arrive.

A lot could happen in half an hour.

Christian made a beeline for Zen.

Wendy put herself between Zen and Christian, buying her more time.

By now, Zen had already gotten onto the bus. However, the bus had not moved.

Desperate, Zen implored the driver, "Start the bus, please? Can you please start the bus now? I have money, I’ll buy all the empty seats on the bus."

Zen then opened the briefcase in her hand and gave the driver a wad of cash.

All she wanted to do now was leave Lake City, leave Christian as soon as possible.

She was worried that if she delayed anymore, she would not be able to leave.
