Chapter 510: This Promise Was Too Much To Bear

Milo did not know what exactly happened, but Michael knew that he meant well.

"I feel that both of you should consider this carefully before making a decision. But I need to emphasize that you must make a decision within these few days. As the fetus grows bigger, the risks of the surgery will be higher. Three months later, her body would definitely not be able to take the risks.

"From my medical perspective as a doctor, I don’t encourage you to go ahead with the surgery. Carrying this child to term comes with a lower risk. Furthermore, after safely giving birth to this child, you could take the chance to rest and recuperate.

This will help to nurse your body back to health. You can even conceive again after that," said the doctor to Wendy.

It was clear from the doctor’s words that giving birth to this child was the best choice for Wendy.

"Thank you, doctor," Michael said. "We won’t be going ahead with the abortion. Let us know what we need to do from here, and where to follow up with obstetrical care."

"Michael..." Upon hearing Michael’s words, Wendy grabbed his arm and tried to speak.

"Wendy, I could let you make the decision previously, but the situation is different now, you’ll have to listen to me," Michael said firmly. "This abortion is not happening. You have to give birth to this child."

"But..." Wendy had not finished when Michael interrupted her again, "No more buts, give birth to this child."

Seeing that they did not insist on going ahead with the abortion, the doctor heaved a sigh of relief. After all, if anything happened to Wendy, he didn’t want to be dragged into the matter.

"I’ll ask someone to follow up with you. Please take a seat," the doctor said. He then gave instructions to his assistant over the phone.

When he ended the call, the doctor explained, "Typically, pregnant women come for pre-natal checkups about once or twice during the first three months. But for Mrs.

Lucas, I recommend that you do a checkup once every week. And for the first three months, absolutely no sexual intercourse."

The doctor emphasized the word "absolutely", and even looked towards Michael for good measure. This was obviously directed at Michael, who felt a little awkward but he kept quiet.

Michael diligently took note of the doctor’s instructions, remembering every word in detail. After coming out from the doctor’s office, Michael held Wendy’s hand tightly.

He looked at Milo and said, "Thanks."

He was thanking Milo for helping to persuade Wendy earlier on.

Milo smiled lightly and said, "Take good care of the baby." He then turned and left.

Holding Wendy’s hand, Michael walked towards the exit of the hospital.

"Wendy, don’t blame me, I can’t put you in danger," Michael sighed and looked at Wendy, his gaze stern and sincere at the same time. He continued, "I can’t pay the price of letting this child go."

Wendy understood that Michael wanted the best for her. She was actually having mixed feelings as well. frёewebnoѵēl.com

...

Wendy subconsciously touched her tummy. She had just found out about her pregnancy the day before, but the mother-child bond had already formed. Knowing that the best choice was to keep this child, she actually heaved a sigh of relief.

To a mother, throwing away the life of one’s own child is an extremely cruel thing to do. However, Wendy remained worried that this child could be Clement’s.

Wendy held Michael’s hand tightly. She then looked at him, bit her lip and sighed as she asked, "Michael, what if this child is..." Wendy did not continue but Michael knew what she was going to say. Holding onto Wendy’s hand tightly, Michael was smiling slightly but he said very sternly, "Wendy, I didn’t sleep a wink last night."

"You didn’t?" Wendy was a little shocked. As Michael nodded, Wendy felt a little guilty. Michael was up all night because of her.

Michael said, "I’ve said it yesterday, no matter what your decision is, I will be with you. I’ve been thinking about it last night. I was thinking about the consequences of whether or not you choose to keep this child.

"I know that you definitely can’t bear to abort the child. If you’d gone ahead with the surgery today, you’d definitely be overwhelmed by guilt. You can’t face what happened that night, but you know that the child is innocent.

"Back then, you sacrificed your life and gave birth to little Leah and little Jake. How could you possibly bear to kill your own child? This was also the reason why I persuaded you to keep this child yesterday. I’m letting you take a few days to think about it in peace, because I was afraid that you’d regret your choice.

"But I didn’t think that the nightmare last night had made you determined to still go ahead with the abortion. It seems now that perhaps it’s all fated. Even God wants us to keep this child.

"I know you’re afraid that this child could be Clement’s, you’re afraid that I would mind. You’re afraid that I’m only trying to put your mind at ease. When the child starts to resemble Clement as he grows older, you and I wouldn’t be able to accept it. Is that what you’re thinking about?"

Michael truly knew Wendy very well. Every word that he spoke went straight to her heart. At that moment, they had reached the carpark. Michael walked to the passenger side and opened the door for Wendy. He walked to the driver’s side only after making sure that Wendy had settled in. Then, he helped Wendy fasten her seatbelt.

Michael’s eyes were very stern as he looked straight at Wendy. He then raised his hand and made a solemn promise, "Wendy, I, Michael Lucas, promise that no matter who this child belongs to, as long as you’re safe, we can make it work. We will never do a paternity test. This child is ours."

To Wendy, this promise was too much to bear.

...

"Michael..." Wendy’s eyes began to tingle as the tears formed. As her sight blurred, Wendy reached out, wanting to hug Michael, but she could not move at all because of the seatbelt.

The heavy atmosphere in the car was lightened by this scene unfolding. Michael bent to hug Wendy and kissed her cheek. He caressed her soft hair as he said, "Alright, don’t you worry. No matter what, this child is still yours. Furthermore, let’s not be so pessimistic. The chance of this child being mine is very high, isn’t it?"

"Mm." Wendy smiled through her tears and her mouth curved upwards as she said, "The paternity test must still be done. You’ve also said it that the possibility that this is your child is very high. If this paternity test isn’t done, we’ll never be at peace.

Since you’re not bothered about who’s the father of this child, then let’s just get to the bottom of it. It’ll be better this way, isn’t it?" frёewebnoѵēl.com

"Sure, as long as you’re willing, we’ll do it." Michael nodded and the smile on his face was very gentle. "However, we must ensure your safety before we proceed. The doctor had said it too, your body is weaker than the average pregnant woman, so let’s do the paternity test only after the child is born. We’ve decided to keep this child anyway. It won’t matter whether we do the text now or later on."

"Michael, you’re the best." Wendy hugged Michael’s neck and planted a kiss on his cheek.

"You’ve only just realized that I’m the best?" Michael smiled and his eyes radiated gentleness. "Alright, sit tight, I’m going to drive."

Seeing that Wendy had settled in, Michael then fastened his seatbelt and started to drive. Michael’s reassurance had made Wendy feel much more relieved. She was now in a better mood.

"You can go to work, I’m okay being alone at home," Wendy said. They were home, but she saw that Michael did not intend to go to the office.

"I’ll accompany you at home today, there’s nothing much to do at work..." Michael had not finished speaking when his cellphone rang. Wendy saw that it was Mr. York who was calling.

"Pick it up," Wendy smiled as she said. "If Mr. York is looking for you, it’s definitely something important."

Mr. York had never bothered Michael for nothing. Michael had just said that there was nothing going on at the office. Now that Mr. York was looking for him, wouldn’t it be calling Michael’s bluff? But since Wendy insisted, Michael could only oblige.

"Chairman, there’ll be a quarterly meeting this afternoon, will you be able to make it on time?" Mr. York instantly asked the moment the call connected.

"Delay it..." Hearing that Michael had said the word "delay", Wendy immediately walked to his side and said into the cellphone, "He’s coming right now."

"Wendy..." Michael turned his head to look at Wendy. He sighed and said, "I don’t feel at ease leaving you at home by yourself."

"Zess will be with me," Wendy smiled and pointed to Zess who was mopping the floor. "I’m an adult. I can take care of myself."

"Chairman Lucas, don’t you worry, I will take good care of Wendy," Zess immediately said to Michael upon hearing that they were talking about her.

"Quick. Go," Wendy said as she gave Michael a push.

Michael wanted to say something but Wendy had already taken his blazer and briefcase, and proceeded to open the door.

Though Michael was exasperated, he smiled. Saying nothing else, he left.
