Chapter 485: Have You Ever Loved Me? Even Just A Bit
Looking at how Todd was behaving now, Michael remained very concerned.
What if something happened to Wendy after he left her alone here? He would not be able to protect her then.
Michael held her hand and shook his head again.
Pursing her lips, Wendy lowered her eyes.
"Why? Are you afraid that I would do something terrible to Corrine?" Todd laughed.
"So I am now such a bad person in your mind?"
From his tone, Wendy thought it would not be right to reject his request. They were friends after all. freeweɓnøvel.com
Sighing, Wendy let go of Michael’s hand and said softly, "Wait for me outside."
"Wendy, you..."
Wendy interrupted before he could finish his sentence. But what she said couldn’t be heard. She leaned into Michael as she spoke, afraid that Todd might be hurt if he heard her.
Wendy said, "Wait outside by the door for me. If something happens, I will shout for you."
Michael opened his mouth and seemed to want to say something. But Wendy squeezed his hand, trying to reassure him.
In Wendy’s opinion, it was unlikely that Todd would do anything silly.
Michael looked at her and then glanced at Todd. He finally nodded in agreement.
When he walked past Todd, he gave him a stern look to warn him to behave himself.
The room was quiet again after Michael left.
Todd was an average drinker. Because he had drunk too fast plus the fact that the wine had a high alcohol content, his face was turning red. His body was also feeling the heat.
Todd moved to take off his jacket.
Wendy unconsciously took a step back when Todd moved his arms.
Todd noticed what she did. His eyes were filled with disappointment. He smiled bitterly at her and asked, "Since when are you afraid of me?"
"I..." Wendy took a deep breath.
She was not afraid of Todd but he really seemed different tonight.
"Todd..." Wendy paused before continuing, "We are friends. I really hope that you can find someone who loves you and whom you love. Then you can spend the rest of your life together happily."
"Someone who loves me that I love back?" Todd was laughing but his laughter was not out of joy. "Corrine, do you really think that I will be able to find such a person?"
Wendy was rendered speechless. She was unsure of how to reply.
In her hesitation, Todd took a step closer and went on, "Corrine, a long time ago, I had really wanted to wish you and Michael well. But, just when I had given up, why did you come back to me?
"You had already agreed to be my girlfriend. How could you choose to forgive Michael in the end? Tell me, Corrine, in what ways am I inferior to Michael? Tell me and I will change."
Todd’s eyes were full of sadness.
The feeling of loving someone and not being able to have her had overwhelmed him.
"Todd, stop behaving this way." Wendy sighed again, feeling helpless.
She didn’t know how to console Todd.
After being silent for a while, Wendy said quietly, "It was all my fault for misleading you. I should never have given you false hope."
She really did want to give Todd a chance and also give herself a chance.
But life was so unpredictable. Who knew after one big round, she was back with Michael again.
"Michael made you do this, right?" Todd took another step forward. He looked at her with pleading eyes, hoping she would say yes.
...
Unfortunately, Wendy shook her head.
"It must be Michael who forced you to be with him!" Todd refused to accept Wendy’s answer.
He saw the empty glass that was on the table. He picked it up and slammed it on the floor.
There was a loud crash when the glass hit the floor.
It shocked Wendy so much that she moved back a step.
Michael, who was just outside the door, heard the sound and rushed in immediately.
He saw Wendy and Todd standing face to face and the shattered glass on the floor.
Before Michael could ask anything, Wendy said, "Don’t worry. It was just an accident."
Michael looked at her worriedly. She nodded to him again and he left the room.
"Todd, calm down. Let’s just talk." Wendy didn’t want Todd to continue like this. "I have never forgotten the kindness you have shown me all these years. But love cannot be forced. You are a good man. As long as you are willing to let go of me, I am sure you will be able to find true happiness."
"Don’t talk to me about my happiness. Without you by my side, how can I be happy?" Todd retorted. "You said love cannot be forced. If you cannot force yourself to love me then how can I force myself to love another?"
Wendy sighed again. She was at a loss for words.
"Corrine, Michael may say that he doesn’t mind. But he is a man. How can he not mind what happened?" Todd tried to persuade Wendy. "Even if he doesn’t mind now, eventually he will. I am a man. I understand how men think."
"Then what about you?" Wendy countered. "You are a man. And you said that all men will be bothered. Then won’t you be bothered too?"
Todd had tried to emphasize the same point over and over. Wendy knew where he was coming from.
"I am different. I truly love you. Besides, when I knew you, you were already pregnant. But Michael is different. How can he accept a wife who has been defiled?"
Todd responded seriously.
"I believe in Michael," Wendy said with great conviction. "He will not mind."
Wendy didn’t believe Michael before so she tested him. She wanted to leave, even had the thought of leaving the two children behind.
But she’d realized that she was wrong.
She had completely underestimated the love that Michael had for her.
Now she trusted Michael more than she trusted anyone.
He would not mind.
He certainly would not mind.
Todd could see the trust Wendy had for Michael.
He felt a tightness in his chest.
"Todd, please try to forget me. I believe you can do it. Even if you cannot do it now, given time, you surely can do it."
Wendy tried to convince him again. But she knew it was futile.
Todd was smiling. She didn’t know if she had gotten through to him.
Wendy sighed again. She knew he would need more time to figure things out.
"Goodbye then, Todd." With that, she turned to leave the room.
Before she could move further, she heard Todd asking, "Corrine, have you ever loved me? Even just a bit?"
This was the final question that Todd wanted to ask.
Wendy hadn’t expected such a question.
For a moment, she didn’t know how to reply.
If she said no, he would be devastated.
But if she said yes, Todd would hate Michael even more. He might think that without Michael, she would be with him.
So she decided to answer honestly, "Never."
It was the truth, Wendy had never loved Todd.
...
Wendy had not considered getting into a new relationship at all. In the past, she was engulfed by her hate for Michael, and all she could think about was seeking revenge from him. Later, she fell in love with him again and only had eyes for him.
"No... Ha... I see," Todd’s smile appeared particularly sad.
Wendy took a deep breath and remained silent. Just as she was going to leave, Todd started to speak again, "Even though you never loved me, can you give me a hug?"
It was difficult to determine if Todd’s request was too much. Wendy hesitated at first. Then she realized that she owed it to Todd after all.
It would seem a little heartless of her should she turn down such a simple request from Todd. Furthermore, she would not be seeing him often when she left tomorrow.
’I should agree to his request,’ Wendy thought. She turned around and walked towards Todd while he looked at her with anticipation. Reaching her arms out, she gave Todd a hug.
Just as she was about to let him go, Todd held on to her tightly. Initially, Wendy had only resisted slightly to show her discomfort. However, she realized that Todd’s hug was increasingly tight, and she started to struggle with all her might.
"Todd," Wendy was getting anxious as she was unable to push him away, "let me go."
"Can’t I just hold you for a little longer?" Todd’s sounded extremely wistful.
He shut his eyes and took a deep breath, basking in Wendy’s scent, as if it was something he wanted to remember for a lifetime. However, his move clearly angered Wendy. She thought that this would end with a simple hug, but he had crossed the line instead.
"Todd, I’ll get really mad if you don’t let me go right now," Wendy said heatedly.
Upon hearing this, Todd loosened his grip. However, his intoxication seemed to have gotten the better of him, and a thought emerged in his mind. The moment he released Wendy, he clasped her head with both hands and wanted to kiss her on the lips.
Wendy was taken aback by his behavior. She stretched out her hands to push him with all her strength and tilted her head to shun his lips at the same time.
Wendy was furious. "Todd! What are you doing?"
"I just wanted a kiss, Corrine. Just fulfill this wish of mine, can you?" Todd’s tone was imploring and almost delirious. "Please?"
"You are too much!" In a frenzy to push Todd away, Wendy raised her hand and gave slapped on the face. She did not expect that he would act like this at all.
"I’m too much?" Todd’s smile looked sinister, unlike any that Wendy had seen before. He continued, "What is one kiss compared to my love for you all these years? Feelings aside, I have also helped you a great deal over the years. Why can’t you just see it as a payment and let me kiss you?"
"Todd, what has become of you?" Wendy shook her head and looked at the man in front of her in disbelief. "You weren’t like this in the past."
"I’ve changed? Have I? Michael said the same thing." Todd was smiling, but tears streamed down his cheeks.
"Have I really changed?" he could not help asking himself.
"This is absurd!" Wendy said as she turned to leave. However, Todd quickly grabbed her hand.
It seemed that he did not intend to let her go just yet.
