Chapter 427: She Owed Wendy Too Much

"Mr. Woods, is that what you think too?" Wendy questioned Timothy once again.

Indeed, this was Timothy’s conjecture. He had already started suspecting Wendy long ago on many occasions. However, he had never managed to gather any evidence against her, except this time.

But it was not a good idea for him to personally call Wendy out, so he let his assistant be the bad guy instead. In case this matter had nothing to do with Wendy, it would not affect their relationship.

"That’s not what I meant," said Timothy, but his expression gave him away. He obviously did not trust Wendy anymore.

It was little wonder why Timothy had brought her back to the company forcefully when they’d already arrived for the board meeting.

So they had already found something.

"Winston is my assistant, so you blame me for his disappearance and collaboration with the quality inspection officer," said Wendy. "Now, he is your assistant, and his suspicion does not represent your idea? Are you having double standards now, Mr.

Woods?"

"I..." Timothy was speechless upon hearing what Wendy said.

Todd seized the opportunity and said, "Mr. Woods, so what has this matter got to do with Corrine? Even if it were true, Winston had betrayed HG Enterprise for the sake of money. What about Corrine? For Winston, eight million dollars is indeed a huge sum. However, what is eight million dollars to Corrine? You should know it better than I do."

"We’re not saying that Ms. Swift did it for the sake of money. Perhaps she is up to something else?"

"What is she up to then?" said Todd as he looked at Timothy’s assistant. He sounded a little angry, "If you are not able to give me a reasonable explanation today, you will have to apologize to Corrine right away!"

"Because she is Michael Lucas’s ex-wife, and Michael Lucas and Christ...."

"After all, Winston is Corrine’s assistant," Timothy interrupted instantly. His assistant had almost spilled the beans. "I hope that Corrine can help us in the investigations to track Winston down.

"How could they put HG Enterprise in such a tragic situation for a few million dollars?

I will definitely not let this matter slide so easily."

Wendy’s face darkened as she lowered her head slightly. Then, she took out her cellphone and tapped into the call logs.

She made a call to Winston, but his cellphone was switched off long ago.

Wendy then sent him a message, "Please call me as soon as you see this message!"

She sent it right in front of Timothy.

"That’s all I can do," said Wendy. "I will inform you immediately if I have any news of Winston.

If you’re still suspicious of me, you may check my bank account or even my call logs, emails, and whatever else you like."

As soon as she finished speaking, she handed her cellphone over to Timothy directly, "After all, this is not the first time you checked my cellphone. I"ve have already unlocked it for you. Here you go!"

Timothy wanted to take the cellphone that Wendy had put in front of him. But he did not dare to do so. Previously, whenever he had suspicions about Wendy, he would check her cellphone umpteen times, but to no avail. If he still could not get any evidence against her this time, he really wouldn’t know how to face her.

"That’s not necessary. I trust you," said Timothy. "I’m contented if you’re willing to cooperate with me. I hope you don’t misunderstand me too."

Timothy patted Wendy’s shoulder as soon as he finished speaking. He signed heavily with a helpless expression on his face.

...

"If there’s nothing else, I’d like to make a move," said Wendy coldly. "Now that I’m already a suspect, I don’t think I will be involved in anything related to HG Enterprise for the time being. Just the right time for me to take a break. Bye!"

Wendy turned around and walked away as soon as she finished speaking.

"Wait a second." Todd took a step forward and grabbed her hand.

Wendy turned around while Todd looked at Timothy’s assistant. Todd then said to him seriously, "I’ve said that if you don’t have a reasonable explanation, you will have to apologize to Corrine."

The assistant glanced at Timothy in a bid to gauge his boss’s stand. Then, he turned around and bowed as he apologized to Wendy, "I am sorry, Ms. Swift."

Wendy did not say anything. This time, she turned around and walked away immediately. Todd followed her out as well.

After both of them were gone, the assistant asked Timothy, his face dark and solemn, "Sir, do you think this matter has something to do with Ms. Swift?"

"Most probably yes," said Timothy. "Fortunately, I’ve yet to let her join the board meeting. Or the consequences could be dire."

This assistant was Timothy’s most trusted subordinate. He knew HG Enterprise like the back of his hand.

"Shall I send someone to tail Ms. Swift?" asked the assistant.

"Not now. She’s very vigilant. If she knew that we’ve sent someone to watch her, the situation might worsen. Let’s not take any action before we get hold of any evidence against her," Timothy said as he sighed. "We should not burn any bridges yet."

Timothy could not find any evidence to prove her guilty every time he suspected her. It only served to alert her, and he had gained nothing at all.

"In that case, I will tell them to ramp up search efforts for Winston instead," said the assistant.

"Very well then," said Timothy as he closed his eyes. He did not say anything further.

This matter was indeed a pain in the neck.

Back then, after Todd knew about the HG Enterprise’s board meeting, he chose to set up his own company. Now, when Wendy wanted to join the board meeting, HG Enterprise was in deep trouble.

He really hoped that everything would not turn out to be what Christian had said previously. Otherwise, he would not know if he should continue to keep Wendy by his side.

...

Wendy and Todd left HG Enterprise immediately. They walked home instead of driving. While they were on the way back, both of them breathed a sigh of relief.

"We managed to pull it off tonight," said Todd. "I really hope that he wouldn’t be able to find any evidence."

"Michael was the one who’d arranged everything. I’m not involved at all. That’s why Mr. Woods is unable to find any evidence that points the blame to me," said Wendy.

"This was what I was worried about back then. That’s why I let Michael take charge of everything. He stays in Lake City while Mr. Woods is in Rheinsville City, so it wouldn’t be easy for him to track Michael down. Even if Mr. Woods managed to track Michael down, it would have nothing to do with me. All the evidence would only point to Michael.

"Anyway, Michael had already officially declared war with HG Enterprise when he decided to poach their customers."

Without a doubt, Wendy was the one who had instructed Winston for this matter.

Winston had been working for Wendy for years. She had gained a firm foothold two years after joining the company, and she had recruited Winston to be her assistant then. He was indeed her most trusted subordinate.

As early as a month ago, Wendy had already started plotting in secret. She promised Winston that she would give him a sum of money and guaranteed that he would not have to worry about anything for the rest of his life.

Furthermore, she had also arranged for him to leave HG Enterprise so that Timothy’s men would never find him again. In fact, he did not have to hide for long.

Because HG Enterprise was about to close down soon. By then, Timothy and Christian would not be a threat anymore.

...

It’s a pity they discovered the matter before Wendy could join the board meeting. If only they had found out about it after she entered the meeting room Well, things happen. Hitches in life are unavoidable.

"We should still be doubly cautious," said Todd worriedly. "Although Mr. Woods does not have any evidence, I’m afraid might do something out of desperation."

Todd turned around and looked at Wendy as he continued, "Do you think Mr. Woods will send someone to keep an eye on you? Previously, he had already suspected you, but he didn’t have any evidence against you. It’s different this time. You were already outside the meeting room, yet he could still ask you to leave with him. It’s obvious he knows you most probably had something to do with it. I guess he just didn’t have enough evidence to call you out directly."

"That’s hard to say. As long as I’m still useful to him, he would not send anyone to keep an eye on me for the time being," said Wendy as she pursed her lips. "But you’re right. We do need to be very careful."

"Let me send someone to protect you discreetly," said Todd, "In case anything happens to you, I would know immediately."

Todd knew that Wendy hated to be followed, but he wanted to keep an eye on her every move at all times.

Todd added, "Rest assured. Anything that’s not related to your safety, I wouldn’t ask for it to be reported to me. You will still have your freedom. I’m doing this in case something happens to you."

Wendy frowned slightly. She seemed to be thinking if she should agree to it. After some time, Wendy nodded. "All right then. Thank you."

"You don’t have to thank me," Todd breathed a sigh of relief when Wendy agreed to it. He was really worried about Wendy’s safety.

Even if Timothy did not take any action towards Wendy, he could not be sure that Christian would not do anything to her.

"You be careful too," Wendy replied as both of them arrived at Wendy’s home.

"I will," said Todd. He then sighed as he said, "Well... I will take my leave."

"Bye." It was already rather late, so Wendy did not invite Todd into her home.

Zen opened the room door when she heard some noise outside. freewёbnoνel.com

"Why are you back so late?" asked Zen. She saw that Wendy had put extra effort into making herself look good with all that makeup. Then, she poured Wendy a cup of warm water as she took a good look at her, "Did you meet someone tonight?"

Zen was sent by Christian to watch her. So it seemed like she was up to something when she questioned Wendy in such a manner. It was most probably Christian’s idea to get Zen to drill her for details.

Wendy took over the drink and pursed her lips. She then sat on the couch and told Zen honestly, "Well, I think it is fine for me to tell you the truth."

Wendy sighed as she said, "I was supposed to attend the HG Enterprise board meeting tonight. I didn’t expect that before I could enter the meeting room, HG Enterprise met with a mishap.

"What’s bitterly disappointing was, Mr. Woods suspects me again although I’d put so much effort into the company all these years."

"What happened this time?"

The Winston incident was a new development. It was not surprising that Zen, even though she was Wendy’s personal helper, did not know about it yet.

"Winston was in a cahoots with the quality inspection officer from the manufacturer.

That’s why HG Enterprise is in crisis now," said Wendy.

...

"Winston was in a cahoots with the quality inspection officer from the manufacturer?" Zen was so shocked that her mouth opened in shock. "I’ve been working in HG Enterprise for quite some time. I’ve dealt with Winston rather often too. I don’t think he’s that kind of person. Could someone have instructed him to do this?"

"You think the same too?" asked Wendy as she lay on the couch exhausted. "Just because Winston is my assistant, Mr. Woods thinks I was the one who told him to betray the company."

"Well... it sounds a little impossible," Zen said with uncertainty.

Upon hearing Zen’s tone, Wendy stole a glance at her.

"Wendy, you don’t have a reason to do so, do you?" asked Zen tentatively as she got closer to Wendy, "Are you hiding something?"

Zen was so blatant about asking Wendy such a question. Wendy would be a fool if she could not see it.

Wendy then questioned Zen bluntly in return, "Do you think I’d have any reason to do so?"

"Well, how am I suppose to know?" said Zen softly. "But if you trust me, you can tell me the truth. I’m all ears, and I promise that I will not tell anyone about it. I will definitely keep it a secret."

"Would you believe me if I said it had nothing to do with me?" Wendy asked her seriously with a faint smile as she looked at Zen’s expression.

"Christian, are you that desperate?" Wendy asked inwardly.

How could he let Zen push her for details in such a blatant manner? Was he out of ideas already? Wendy’s mood lightened at this thought.

Wendy knew long ago that Christian had sent Zen to watch her. She would never tell Zen the truth.

"Of course, I believe you," said Zen when she sensed something amiss from Wendy’s expression. She then placed her hand on her shoulder as if they were best friends and said, "We have known each other for ages. I know you better than anyone else. I wouldn’t think it’s you."

In fact, Christian did call Zen to tell her to drill Wendy. However, Zen doubted that Wendy would do such a thing.

Zen had intentionally questioned Wendy directly. She did not want to assist Christian in dealing with Wendy anymore.

Zen was not a fool. If she really intended to interrogate Wendy, it would be impossible for Wendy to realize it.

She owed Wendy too much. She owed her so much that she would never be able to repay her for the rest of her life.

Whenever HG Enterprise was in crisis, Zen would think it through. Whatever she could not figure out in the past seemed clearer now. However, she had no intention of probing further for fear that she would not be able to accept the truth.

Sometimes, she even hoped that she never knew Wendy or Christian in the first place. She didn’t want to be caught in such a difficult situation like the one she was in now.

Now that she was still under Christian’s control, she could not betray him. The child in her tummy was his flesh and blood.

However, she really could not do this wholeheartedly for Christian like she did before. She just couldn’t bring herself to betray Wendy. This change in her attitude came about one night when Zen felt her baby move in her tummy. At that particular moment, Zen felt the miracle of life.

She started to think of that one day, when her child was all grown up, how should she answer him when he asked about what kind of person his mother and father were?
