Chapter 404: Stop Smiling Away

Michael looked at Wendy expectantly as she put down the phone. He looked like he was waiting for her answer. Wendy met his eyes and lowered them immediately.

She wasn’t sure what to say to him.

She tried to avoid the question. "It’s getting late," she commented. "Let’s get going.

It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to stay too long here in this office."

She turned to walk away but Michael’s voice held her back. "Wendy, can’t you give me another chance?"

Wendy was in a dilemma as she didn’t know if she should give him another chance.

She didn’t turn around but with a serious tone, she said, "I am Todd’s girlfriend now.

Surely you know what that means?"

Michael had always ignored the fact that Todd and her were together. Since he wanted to talk about this problem so openly, Wendy decided to throw the question at him.

"I..." Michael certainly knew what she meant. They were all adults.

Wendy didn’t hear his response. She smiled as she turned around. "So, Mr. Lucas, what do you mean by always asking me to give you another chance?"

Michael didn’t answer immediately and that made Wendy a little disappointed.

"That’s not what I meant. I was just thinking..."

Before he could finished, Wendy’s phong rang. She looked at her phone and the caller ID showed it was Todd. She hesitated for a moment before picking up the call.

"Hey Todd. What’s up?" Wendy asked.

When Michael heard who was on the other line, he clenched his fist. The action pulled on the wounds on his left hand but at that moment, he couldn’t feel any pain.

He didn’t mind their past at all. He was just thinking of how to face the situation with Todd and Wendy. After all, Todd truly loved Wendy. He was afraid that Wendy would feel like she let Todd down and that she would feel guilty about it. frёewebηovel.cѳm

"Sure. I will come back now, but I am not at the old mansion. I’m at the city hospital.

How about you come over here and meet me at the entrance? I’m fine. It wasn’t me who got hurt. I will tell you in more detail later when I see you." After her last comment, Wendy put down the phone.

With a serious look, Wendy held her phone as she said to Michael, "My boyfriend is on his way to pick me up. You should also get your chauffeur to send you back. If there is nothing else, let’s leave."

Michael was reluctant to let her leave just like that. Today was really his last chance.

It was obvious that Wendy was concerned for him. She surely still had feelings for him.

"Wendy!" Michael raised his voice, "I don’t care what has happened between you and Todd. Just now, I was thinking about how I can make it up to Todd on your behalf. I’m afraid that you would feel as if you had let him down. I am concerned you would feel guilty towards him." Michael’s words stopped Wendy. Seeing her hesitation, he continued, "If I cared, why would I keep asking you for a chance again and again?

If he was the Michael from the past, he would probably acknowledge their relationship. But now, all he wanted was for Wendy to return to his side. Nothing else mattered to him now. All he wanted was Wendy.

If Wendy was completely honest, she had to admit that her heart had skipped a beat at his confession. She had purposely said what she said just now. Wendy paused for a while but finally continued walking.

When Michael saw this, he thought Wendy had made up her mind to not give him any more chances. He was completely devastated by this thought.

....

"My relationship with Todd is nothing like what you have imagined," Wendy remarked with her back towards Michael, but he heard every single word she said.

For a moment, he didn’t react to her statement. He was very upset by the thought of Wendy not wanting to give him another chance. He thought he had lost her for good.

"I no longer have the right to question your relationship with Todd," Michael smiled bitterly as he uttered the words.

After speaking, he suddenly had a realization. What did Wendy just say? Did she just say her relationship with Todd was nothing like what he had imagined? What had he imagined? He had imagined that they were so close that they had become a couple.

For Todd’s sake, she had decided to stay in Rheinsville City and to never return to Lake City. So now she was saying it was not what he had imagined? This thought got him excited.

Michael caught up with her and asked, "Wendy, what did you mean by that? Can you explain more clearly?"

"It’s exactly as I said. If you cannot understand, then forget it. Just pretend I didn’t say anything," Wendy replied with a straight face.

She was regretting making that statement. Why should she explain herself to him?

She should still be angry with him. She already knew that Michael and Yonina were just pretending to be a couple. How could he have doubted her?

"How can I pretend you didn’t say anything when I already heard everything?"

Michael was as happy as a child receiving candy. "Wendy, can you say it again?"

Michael still found it unbelievable. Could he have imagined what Wendy said? Such bliss came too suddenly.

"We are already out of Milo’s office. Can you please watch yourself?" Looking at Michael, Wendy couldn’t decide to be angry or laugh. She continued, "If you don’t stop being so immature and if you do not consider the big picture, I will..." freёwebnoѵel.com

"No. No, I promise I will consider the big picture." Michael hid his smile and put on an obedient look. "As long as you are not angry with me, I will listen to you. Whatever you want me to do, I will do it." Even without the smile, he still couldn’t hide his joy.

"I didn’t say I am not angry with you anymore. Do you know how many times you have let me down?" Wendy said.

"Yes, I do. And I will work hard making it up to you," Michael vowed. "Whatever I do in the future, my dearest wife will always be my priority. Everything revolves around my wife, and I will never do anything to cheat or lie to you."

"I am not your wife. Now, I am Todd’s girlfriend." Wendy took a deep breath. She saw Michael’s expression turn serious, so she continued, "Michael, let’s settle the matter with Christian first. Let’s discuss everything else another time. I am not really in the mood to talk about the matters of the heart now."

Michael could tell what she meant from her solemn expression. He immediately nodded in agreement. "We will surely put Christian out of power soon."

It was indeed important to focus on the big picture for now. As long as Wendy still had feelings for him, Michael felt assured that there was still a chance for them to be together. He felt hopeful again. He had indeed done many things to let Wendy down and he certainly didn’t expect her to forgive him so fast. He would use his actions to convince her that he loved her and he had become more mature.

...

Wendy and Michael stepped out of the hospital together.

She needed to wait at the entrance for Todd.

Michael didn’t want to leave just yet. He planned to leave together with them when Todd arrived.

Wendy was quiet throughout.

But seeing Michael was all smiles, she had no choice but to warn him, "Michael, can you please stop smiling away?"

"Sure, sure. I will stop right now." Whatever Wendy told him to do now, he gladly obeyed.

His expression quickly turned solemn. But his eyes continued to stay on Wendy, not willing to let her out of his sight.

Wendy sighed again but she felt a warmth in her heart.

Nobody said anything. They just stood together silently.

Soon, Todd reached the hospital.

He alighted from the car and was looked everywhere for Wendy.

He then spotted her standing together with Michael.

Todd quickly rushed over. He was out of breath as he scanned her from head to toe.

He then asked concernedly, "Are you really okay?"

Although Wendy had assured him already on the phone that she was not injured, Todd was still worried.

She was at the hospital after all.

Wendy shook her head and smiled, "The one injured is not me."

Michael frowned as he saw how concerned Todd was for Wendy.

He knew that Todd was really in love with Wendy. He had always been around her all this while.

Wendy owed it to him for where she was today.

Michael had mixed feelings about Todd.

On one hand, he didn’t like a man who was always eyeing his wife.

But on the other hand, he was the same man who had helped Wendy a lot when she was deeply hurt by Michael.

Todd followed Wendy’s gaze and saw Michael standing at the side.

Michael’s hand was bandaged. It was obvious that his left hand was injured.

Todd instinctively pushed Wendy behind him and stood in front of Michael, "So it was you who got injured, Mr. Lucas. How did you get hurt?"

"It is a long story." Michael’s view was blocked by Todd. He couldn’t see Wendy and that made him edgier.

But since they were no longer in Milo’s office, he couldn’t be too obvious.

He wasn’t sure if Christian had sent people to spy on them.

"Then, don’t bother explaining." Todd wasn’t interested to know the reason anyway.

To be more accurate, Todd didn’t want Wendy to spend too much time with Michael here.

It looked like it was Wendy who sent Michael here. And they had been alone together long enough.

Todd pulled on Wendy’s hand and said, "We still have something on, so we shall make a move first, Mr. Lucas. Sorry, we cannot give you a lift. It seems inconvenient for you to drive. You might want to call for a taxi or get your chauffeur to pick you up."

"Don’t worry about me," Michael replied.

Todd wasn’t the least worried about him. He muttered something and walked away with Wendy in tow.

Looking at Wendy leaving from behind, Michael followed subconsciously and called, "Wendy ..."

Wendy also stopped in her tracks.

Todd looked irritated. He turned away and spoke sternly, "I wonder what does Mr.

Lucas want from my girlfriend by calling her name."

"I ..." Michael took a look at Wendy. Then, he just smiled and shook his head, "Never mind, it’s nothing."

"Great. If you need anything, please contact your personal assistant or someone else."

Todd wanted to leave after making that remark.

But the moment he turned around, he saw Yonina getting out of the car and walking towards them.

...

Why was Yonina Collins here at this time?

Todd had no interest in Yonina.

But Yonina was Michael’s fiancee and she was pregnant with his child.

He knew it was all just a pretense but this could provoke Wendy.

So Todd said, "Ms. Collins, you are here to pick Mr. Lucas up? Looks like you are such a loving couple."

Yonina smiled and nodded, "Yes, I received news that Michael was injured so I rushed here as soon as I can. Michael, you really..."

Yonina walked over to Michael and held on to his arm. She chided him, "Why didn’t you call me immediately when you got injured? Ms. Swift and you are unrelated.

What will happen if the media manage to take pictures of just the two of you alone, walking out of the hospital? There will bound to have more juicy gossip about you two."

"There are people everywhere in the hospital. How can we be alone?" Michael retorted.

He didn’t inform Yonina about him being injured.

He was sure that his Grandmother wouldn’t inform her too since she only acknowledged Wendy as his granddaughter-in-law.

So there could only be one possibility - Christian. He must be the one who informed Yonina.

"Of course, I trust you. But those nosy reporters wouldn’t care about the truth."

Yonina turned around to Wendy and thanked her. "Thank you so much, Ms. Swift. I will take over from here now. When we have time, let me buy you a meal as a gesture of gratitude."

"You don’t have to. I didn’t do much." Wendy politely rejected the offer.

"If there is nothing else, we are making a move first. Goodbye." Once again, Todd pulled Wendy along to leave.

This time, they finally made it to the car.

Yonina and Michael stood where they were and watched them leave.

Looking at the car leaving, Michael finally asked, "Christian sent you here?"

Yonina nodded and whispered, "Yes, Christian called me and informed me that you are both at the hospital. He told me to rush here as soon as I can."

"This Christian. He already won the tender and still, he is so concerned about Wendy and me." Michael took a deep breath and shook his head.

It looked like Christian’s feelings for Wendy were deeper than he could imagine. Or rather, his hatred for Michael was much deeper than he thought.

"Let’s also leave," Yonina said as she walked away, "What should I tell Christian about the both of you?"

Christian must have sent her here to find out more information. Understandably, she must give him a good explanation.

Michael was deep in thought.

Then he instructed, "Tell him that Grandmother asked me to go home without Wendy knowing. She wanted to put us together. We got into a fight when we were left alone. Wendy got so angry that she stabbed me with a fruit knife. I didn’t want the family to find out what happened so I made her bring me here to the hospital to get the wound treated. The rest still have no idea what had transpired. Wendy didn’t want to bring me here initially but she was concerned that Grandmother would be upset. So, she had no choice but to do what I said."

This was what Christian would want to hear as he had been hoping that their relationship would deteriorate further.

Now that Wendy had stabbed Michael, it could only mean their relationship had worsened.

She must have hated him so much to do something like that.

Yonina acknowledged with a nod, "I will do as you said. But what is the truth?"

Michael sighed resignedly, "My mum did this."
