Chapter 39: Home
Yvonne was in a trance as she lay in the hospital bed. She did not know what had gone wrong. She thought, why doesn’t Michael care about me anymore? if this were like before, Michael would surely take my side and personally take me to the hospital.
Mr. York had left after seeing her at the hospital. Now, she was all alone in bed. Yvonne gripped the sheets beneath her tightly. Gritting her teeth, she cursed Wendy under her breath, "Wendy, you sl*t. What kind of spell did you put Michael under? Why does he keep taking your side now? "
She thought, no, I can’t just sit here and wait around. Whipping out her phone, she called Michael’s number.
When Michael saw an incoming call from Yvonne, he frowned. Deep down, he felt slightly resistant. However, Yvonne had been with him for four years. Michael hesitated momentarily before answering her call.
The instant the call went through, he heard Yvonne sobbing over the phone, saying, "Michael, I’m in so much pain after twisting my ankle. The doctor said that it might take a whole month before I can start walking normally again."
Yvonne had indeed sprained her ankle. The injury had happened when Wendy shoved her and she fell to the ground. However, the recovery would not take one month as Yvonne had claimed. Instead, a period of ten days would suffice. She had intentionally exaggerated so that Michael would feel sorry for her.
"If that’s the case, you should rest up in the hospital," replied Michael coldly as he pinched the area between his eyebrows.
When Yvonne heard Michael’s tone, she cried even more pitifully. "Michael, can you come and visit me in the hospital? I’m all alone here, and it’s terrifying."
"I’m working now. Let me know if you need anything and I’ll have someone send it over."
"I just want you to come and visit me, Michael," said Yvonne. She no longer cared about anything else. Right now, she just wanted to see Michael so that she could get the chance to complain about the great injustice she had suffered.
"Let’s talk after I get off work. I’m busy right now," said Michael. Yvonne’s relentless crying made him feel slightly disgusted. With that, he hung up on her.
As Yvonne listened to the beeping over the phone, she raised her hand, thinking of smashing the device. However, she ultimately chose not to. She needed to stay at the hospital, and she needed to call Michael again at night after work was over. No matter what, she had to get Michael to come and visit her.
Time passed by slowly...
Yvonne called Michael again right at 6 in the evening. When the call went through, Yvonne asked weakly, "Michael, are you off work yet?"
"I still have one more meeting to attend, so I’ll be late," said Michael. The truth was that no such meeting existed. He simply did not wish to visit Yvonne.
Yvonne knew that Michael had changed. If this were like before, he would have abandoned his work to visit her in the hospital. She knew that Michael was mad at her. She started apologizing through her tears, "Michael, I’m sorry. I admit that I’m at fault for what happened today. But I never expected Quinnly to go after Zen like that, I swear. I promise that I won’t try to bully Wendy again in the future. Michael, I really Won’t. In fact, I’ll give in to Wendy even if she tries to mess with me. Michael, can you please come and visit me in the hospital?"
Yvonne’s voice was as pitiful as it could be. Sighing, Michael replied, "Send me the hospital address, I’ll come over once I’m done with work."
When Yvonne heard Michael concede, she immediately smiled. After hanging up, she texted Michael the hospital address. Then, she happily waited for Michael’s arrival at the hospital. She believed that as long as Michael showed up, she could make him feel for her again.
...
Since Wendy did not have much to do, she walked out of work right on time. She had planned on going home to design the wedding dress requested by her fan on TikTok. Since she had already returned her car to Michael, she now traveled everywhere by taking the subway.
Unexpectedly, she saw Michael’s car on her way to the subway. When Wendy caught sight of his vehicle, she immediately quickened her pace. Inexplicably, she found herself not wanting to meet him. However, Michael’s car came to a gradual stop beside Wendy when he saw her. He rolled down the windows and said coldly, "Get in."
No matter how Michael treated her in the past, Wendy would put aside her pride and follow him everywhere he went. But right now, Wendy found herself unwilling to pay any attention to Michael with his unpleasant tone.
Michael grew furious when he saw Wendy continue walking away. The car trailed after her, and when Michael spoke again, his tone was much firmer, "I asked you to get in, didn’t you hear me?"
Wendy’s temper flared up then, too. She turned around to look at Michael in the car and said, "Mr. Lucas, I’m off work now. I don’t believe I need to obey your instructions."
Michael knew that Wendy was still mad at him. However, he could not bring himself to coax her.
"As an employee of MC Enterprise, you have to obey instructions from your superiors even when you’re off work," said Michael. He was obviously being unreasonable.
Wendy sneered. She gave him a contemptuous look and walked off. Seeing Wendy about to enter the subway station, Michael started honking frantically.
As it was during peak traffic, there were many cars on the road. Michael’s slow speed already caused an obstruction to the other cars in his lane, and his persistent honking now made the drivers in the car behind him even more irritated.
However, when they saw the license plate number and realized who the driver was, they did not dare to show their temper, much less get out of their cars and confront Michael for his behavior.
Michael exhaled heavily and tried his best to suppress his anger. He whispered, "I don’t believe that I can’t get her to get in." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
He then whipped out his phone and called Mr. York, instructing him, "Check which subway line Wendy takes to Zen’s apartment and suspend it immediately. If there is more than one line she can take to get there, suspend every single one."
When Mr. York heard his task, he was bewildered. He thought, why is Michael asking about this? And why does he want me to suspend the subway Lines? However, Mr. York knew that Michael’s decisions were always resolute. Without questioning Michael, he acknowledged his boss’s instructions.
When Wendy arrived at the platform and waited for her train to arrive, she was shocked to hear an announcement declaring the suspension of Line 3. Line 3 was the fastest way to Zen’s apartment. If she took another line, she would have to change trains multiple times. Moreover, the subway stations that they brought her to were much further away, which was very inconvenient.
She didn’t have much of a choice; Wendy could only leave the subway station. She thought that she would just flag a cab back. However, the moment she left the subway station, she caught sight of Michael’s Bentley, worth millions of dollars.
Just then, she saw a cab approaching her. Wendy immediately stuck her hand out to flag it.
As soon as the cab came to a halt, Michael got out of his car and grabbed Wendy’s hand. He told the cab driver, "We’re not taking this."
"Why did you flag me down then? What a waste of my time," the driver scolded them angrily.
"I want to take your cab," said Wendy. She did not know what Michael was trying to do, but she was very sure that she did not wish to get involved with him. However, when she tried flinging his hand away, she found he was gripping her tightly. It was impossible for her to shake him off.
"Michael, let go of me!" Wendy was furious now.
She glared at him with wide eyes and said, "Why won’t you let me take this cab?"
"I told you, I want you to get in my car," said Michael in a stern and cold tone. His head was cocked slightly to the side. "You’re not allowed to get in any other car besides mine today."
Wendy thought about the suspension of Line 3 on the subway. Even though she found it incredulous, she still said, "Please don’t tell me that you were the one who suspended Line 3 on the subway."
"Guilty," said Michael, his eyes shining with delight. "If you don’t agree to get in my car, I can even suspend all the cabs. Do you believe me?"
Of course, Wendy believed that Michael had the ability to do that. The only thing she did not understand was the motive behind Michael’s actions. Cocking her head slightly, Wendy gazed at Michael and realized that she could not tell what was running through his mind at all.
She thought, he must be crazy for suspending an entire subway line just so I will get into his car.
"Michael, do you have a fever?" Wendy could not help but reach out to feel his forehead.
Michael’s face instantly darkened, "You’re the one with a fever."
Wendy started laughing out of anger. She did not know what to say. She flung Michael’s hand away successfully this time and turned around to leave. She thought, Michael wants me to get into his car? I refuse to do that, even if he wants to suspend all the subway lines and cabs. I’ll just walk home if I have to. Zen’s apartment was located one hour away from the company by foot.
Michael did not expect Wendy to still refuse to get into his car. Watching her walk away, he threatened her, saying, "Wendy Stewart, if you don’t get into my car right now, I’ll fire Zen tomorrow morning."
His threat successfully stopped Wendy in her tracks. Wendy shut her eyes and took a deep breath. Then, she turned around, walked to Michael’s car, and reached out to open the door.
After entering the vehicle, she slammed the car door shut.
Michael knew that Wendy was furious. However, he had obtained his goal. A triumphant smile appeared on his face. He immediately followed her footsteps and got into his own car again. He buckled his seatbelt and took the time to taunt Wendy, saying, "Wendy, don’t try to fight me, you know that you can never win over me." His tone was breezy and arrogant.
"Michael, you’re f*cking crazy!" It would have been better if Michael had remained silent. The moment he spoke, Wendy exploded, "I’ve put aside my pride for the past three years and loved you without any self-respect, and all I wanted was for you to love me back. But you only had Yvonne in your heart, and no matter what I said or did, you chose not to believe me. Fine, since that was the case, I decided to give the two of you my blessings. I’m willing to get divorced, but now, you’re the one who won’t agree to it. Michael, tell me, what exactly do you want?"
"l don’t want anything from you, I just don’t want to let you and Christian get together right now," Michael sneered, "Don’t think that I don’t know what you’re up to."
Wendy thought, does he think that he knows what I’m up to? I only want to get divorced to protect the child that I’m carrying. I don’t want anything else.
Wendy felt helpless against Michael. He had authority and influence, which allowed him to do whatever he wanted. At the end of the day, Wendy was just a pawn on the chessboard between the two brothers. Her chest heaved unsteadily. She was so furious that there was nothing else she could say.
The atmosphere in the car immediately grew colder.
When Wendy realized that this was not the route to Zen’s apartment, she spoke up again, saying, "Michael, where are you taking me?
"Back home," Michael said coldly. "It’s not appropriate for you to remain at Zen’s house for so long. It’s better for you to move back home."
"That’s your home, not mine," said Wendy. What Michael told her back then had thoroughly hurt her feelings. Wendy did not have any interest in returning to that so-called ’Home’. There were too many sad memories in that apartment. Wendy was living a much happier life in Zen’s apartment.
